It seemed so silly to Amber, hearing Chloe and getting to know her, that she should be here at all. Amber understood why she was in a place like this, but Chloe? Chloe was pretty and seemed smart and was in college. Why waste her potential here? It didn’t seem fair.
Maybe she was struggling with her powers as much as Amber did.
She felt heat rush to her cheeks when Chloe talked about introducing Amber to the Deacon clan. That sounded nice, she had to admit, but Amber didn’t honestly know how well she’d mesh. The Deacons sounded like they had everything together, that they looked after and loved one another. Even though Amber felt like she’d stick out as a sore thumb among them, she still smiled bashfully and nodded. “Yeah, totally!”
The concept of going off for cake nearly made Amber’s mouth salivate. She was so, so glad to be eating more these days. “Unf, yes please,” Amber noticed the head bobbing around the aisles was a familiar one, her replacement. Since Amber didn’t feel much like exchanging a conversation, she waved at the replacement cashier and started pushing Chloe towards the exit. “Yup, let’s get out of here—it’s cake time, girl.”
The way that Chloe blushed was enough of a tell that Amber felt comfortable nudging her. “Anyone in particular?”
Being too young to look after West’s kids had never really occurred to her, so Amber merely shrugged. “West had ‘em when he was younger than I am now, and I moved in with him and his kids when I was barely eighteen. I loved ‘em.”
