“They expensive, huh?” Amber winced. She didn’t have any idea how much college fees were—not beyond “pricy.” But she could empathize with having to make certain sacrifices for the sake of finances that were precarious. “Think they’d let you finish it here? I mean, they’ve got online classes and stuff, right? If you liked it, I mean.”
Amber smiled as she listened to Chloe’s story of protective big brothers scaring off interested boys. And Chloe was a pretty girl; Amber could only imagine how many came sniffing around just to try, regardless of the terrifying big brothers who looked like they could break a teenager in half. “They sound real nice,” she said, “Even with the uber-protectiveness thing going on. I’ve never properly met any of ‘em, though.”
She was thrilled that Chloe seemed interested in the idea of throwing a party. “Cool! We can start plannin’ something out, then. Maybe for June? It’d give us lots of time and whatnot.” Not that they didn’t have an abundance of time in Limbo.
Amber took another piece of chocolate before she closed the magazine and tossed it back underneath the till. She’d finish it tomorrow during her next shift. “I think the next person’s comin’ in,” Amber stepped out from behind the till, craning her neck to see if her replacement was on their way or not. She could see a head bobbing around the aisles, but couldn’t make out who it was yet.
“You might get that experience here,” she smirked. “Surprisingly lots of cute people around this place. It’s kinda weird.” When Chloe pressed about Amber’s remark regarding “the kids”, Amber simply nodded. “Yeah, my boyfriend—West—he had a couple of kids. I helped look after ‘em.”
