Dory was resting, curled up in Ritz's sleeping bag with a bottle of boiled snow water, too tired to get up and eat some more tongue though she knew she should. The effects of hypothermia had left her weak and shaky, and that bite... She'd been going through her supply of painkillers and that took the edge off, but even with Marlin to help her keep it clean and change the bandages, and even with Jet's even, neat stitches holding the skin together, it was bad and getting worse. Infection had set in, leaving her calf red and swollen and leaking pus. And there was nothing she could do but limp along with her trident as a walking stick, gritting her teeth and trying not to show her pain and hoping that her mentors would see that she was strong, that she was worth any money they had to spend on something to fix her.
At least they were still in the meadow where it was warm. The Twos and Ritz had gone out on a hunt for tributes or food or sources of water this morning, which Dory was uneasy about, but it wasn't like she could do much about it. Just sit tight and trade off watches with Marlin and Basil and listen for the cannons that would tell them their allies had found more tributes and taken care of them.
She didn't have room in her aching head to think about what would happen if the single cannon they'd heard this afternoon had been for one of those allies instead.
So when the anthem played and the face they saw in the sky was achingly familiar, Dory cried out in surprise and anger before she could control her reaction. "Ritz!" She looked immediately at Basil, trying to judge how he would react. "Oh, sharks. The Twos -- they must have... I'm so sorry, Basil."
Dory was honestly distressed -- she'd liked Ritz in training, and then the girl had helped her warm up after her fall into the water. Aside from Marlin, Ritz had probably been the closest thing to a friend she'd had in the Arena, and she was sad that she was gone. But she was holding her trident tight under the cover of the sleeping bag, in case Ritz's district partner decided that the alliance was broken and tried to take her out. There was no taking chances in the Hunger Games.
