Kennewick always loved the beach. Even when he was younger, before the Games, before he lived on the beach, when he was just another poor kid living outside the canneries, he loved the beach when his parents took him and his sister. He never wanted to leave, but eventually his parents would drag him away and tell them that they would come back when they could.
It’s where he proposes to Marisol, on the white beach near the cove. She doesn’t say yes immediately, she tells him that she needs to think about it and the week waits just about kills him. The old ladies at the market don’t think that he can hear them while they’re gossiping about how that girl won’t say yes, about how she should say no, his family is cursed, about how either of them can do better, but he doesn’t care, he just wants her to say yes To his relief she says yes.
The ceremony is quiet and small, just their families. He doesn’t remember being as happy as he is when they press saltwater against each other’s lips.~*~
Kennewick doesn’t want children but Marisol does. He is terrified they will be Reaped, that there will be no volunteers, they are too old, there is every reason he can come up with and she fights them one by one.
“If they get Reaped we’ll enjoy them while we have them,” she whispers to him but he knows it isn’t that easy. Four almost always has Volunteers and those deaths are always easier to take, it’s the ones where there is no one to stand up for them that are harder. She kisses his cheek and eventually he relents.
“I’m afraid for them,” he admits, his voice barely audible, lost in her dark hair. He can be honest with her even if he can hear all the way from District Two, Marcus calling him an idiot.~*~
They have a boy and a girl. They’re three years apart and Marisol is almost too old to have the girl, but somehow it happens. Just before the girl is born, he brings Finnick Odair home, it’s a good year. His first Victor and his daughter, but it terrifies him when he holds her in his arms. Has he doomed her to a life in the arena and Marisol whispers to him again: we’ll enjoy them while we have them.
It isn’t as comforting now that they’re here but he tries.~*~
Something is going on but whatever it is he doesn’t want to be involved. He hates Katniss, he hates Haymitch, he even hates the stupid boy with the dumb name for pretending to be in love with Katniss Everdeen. He hopes that the stunt with the berries is forgotten soon.
His hopes are dashed when on the Victory Tour they’re not allowed to meet her and then again when he tries to call Two and his phone won’t work.
The Quell is announced and he almost kills himself that night but the only thing that stops him is Marisol and the thought of Peregrine going in there without him to protect her. Not that she needs it but they are the children who swore they would be the first back to back victors, he won’t abandon her now.~*~
He doesn’t see Marcus much, he regrets that when his face is in the sand with two Peacekeepers holding him down. Marisol’s words come to him and before the bullet finds his brain he tries to think of the things he loved: Peregrine, Marisol, the kids, Marcus.
Kennewick swears he hears Peregrine calling out “Wicket” but there is nothing more when the bullet enters his brain, his body washes out to sea.
He always did love the beach.
