Hours passed before Io stopped shaking, hours in which she looked for a sign of any of her allies but was too afraid to call out for any of them. What if one of the Careers heard her and came for her? She was an easy catch, she knew, and she wouldn’t have been surprised if they’d finished their first day in the Arena by combing the area surrounding the Cornucopia for any survivors they could add as notches to their belts. Did anyone even put notches in their belts? Io had no idea. As the sun faded from the trees and no one came, she slowly calmed and found herself able to speak again; being too frightened to speak was a new experience for her, and she’d not enjoyed it very much. Now that she’d caught her breath, though, her words came back. “What do I have,” she said in a low voice, narrating to herself. “I have this bottle.” She held up the bottle in question, tilting it this way and that to examine the bright and bubbly liquid within. “I have my clothes. I have-- trees. Trees aren’t a bad thing to have, I don’t think? Trees are okay. I can work with trees.” She tried to stand and start walking again, but her legs gave out from under her, and she sank back into a seated position at the foot of the tree. “In the morning, I am going to find the people in my alliance, whoever of them are still alive--oh, I hope they’re all alright!--and then we can make a plan. And it will be a good plan, and we’re going to surprise everyone.” Io repeated that last bit several times and eventually opened the bottle to test its contents. The bubbly liquid tasted fruity and sweet, and she found herself drinking a little more of it than she’d intended before reminding herself (aloud) that she needed to save some for the others, whenever she found them. The Anthem surprised her when it started to play. Logically, she knew that it would happen, but the music and images in the sky still startled her. She had no real concept of time here. There was Daeta, and Io felt an instant stab of guilt. She had been so close to the other girl, she could have grabbed her arm and dragged her away from the chaos, but she hadn’t. She’d grabbed bubbly fruity drinks instead. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered, even though the other girl certainly couldn’t hear her. Her throat had begun to ache. The girl from District Four surprised Io, but before she could react further, Helios’ face was in the sky above her, and she had to fight back a cry. “Oh-- oh, oh no!” she managed, shaking her head and covering her mouth. Other faces appeared in his place--the beautiful girl from Eight and both Faline and Cannel, and some part of Io’s mind recognized that Hugh was all that remained of their alliance--but Helios. She’d lost her words again and started to shake once more, drawing her knees tightly to her chest and trying to make herself as small as possible against the trunk of the tree behind her. And before she could stop herself, Io started to cry. She hadn’t cried since saying good-bye to Acey, giving her instructions to care for Jupiter, but once the tears started, they didn’t stop. She kept her face buried in her arms as she sobbed, remembering that she shouldn’t draw any attention, but she couldn’t stop. She was afraid. She was heartbroken. She just wanted to go home. But none of that was possible and, eventually, the tears dried and Io whispered in a thick voice, “I’ll find Hugh tomorrow and we’ll be alright. I promise, we’ll be alright.” |
