Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Penny and Mandy
When: Tuesday afternoon
Where: St. Mungos
What: Healer stuffs!
Warnings/Ratings: Likely low/Ongoing

Brushing her blond locks off her shoulder, Penny tied them back in a low messy ponytail. Typically she would care more about her looks but after working all night she found she really couldn't muster the ambition to care. There was still one more thing to get done before she left and that was a little teaching. Sure she was a bit young to be teaching but she was smart and she did love working with the trainees. It reminded her that she was in their shoes not that long ago herself.

"Morning," she said lightly in greeting when she laid eyes upon Mandy. They had worked together beforer so it wasn't like it was their first time meeting. After a while you got used to seeing the same faces around the hospital. "I was thinking we would work on some more spell damage lessons today." Triage was actually quite boring once you learned the basics. Any specific work that needed done outside stabling a patient was left to the more specialized healers.

"Tell me, what do you know about Memory charms?" It seemed with the rise of the Death Eaters something they were encountering more. They needed to realize and recognize the patients that most likely had their memories motified. "And if I showed you someone would you be able to conclude if they likely had their memories modified?" You could never be 100% sure in ever case but most were fairly obvious typically.

As per usual, Mandy arrived at the hospital early for her shift. She'd dressed in the lime green healer robes before assembling with the rest of her class. There weren't very many of them, not surprising given that it was a difficult programme and wizards as a whole, but Mandy preferred it that way. She'd never been really good at large groups.

When Penny arrived, Mandy smiled at the trainer in greeting, but waited patiently for her to start the lesson. At the first question, Mandy raised her hand. "They're complicated spells that are used to create, modify or remove memories and can be difficult to master and easily be miscast. Depending on the particular memory spell they may be difficult to reverse, especially if miscast, but the symptoms can be treated. " Mandy said in response before raising her hand for the next question. "You can never be entirely certain but there are essential signs which we could use to gauge the possibility." Mandy said then bit her lower lip to stop herself from going on about the subject matter. Not that she was an expert, far from it, bur she couldn't help herself sometimes.

A smile pulled at the corners of Penny's mouth partly because the answer was correct but also because it sounded a lot like an answer she would have given. She had been a Ravenclaw after all. Though her intelligence wasn't something she flashed outside a classroom but this wasn't a classroom and she wasn't a student this time, she was teaching.

"Absolutely correct. I am sure all of you by now have heard about the Gilderoy Lockhart case. Let that be a perfect example of all the ways a memory charm can go wrong." It really had been a horrid mess and even after all these years they were still using it to teach the new healers with. Even Penny herself had been schooled in the case as a student. "Lets not forget there are some very different spells when it comes to memories... We can obliterate them as well as create them."

Penny started walking expecting the class to keep up. There were times when points were better demonstrated than simply explained. "People that have been subjected to this kind of magic often come across as confused and sometimes chronically forgetful if there has been significant damage. You have to probe though if you want to find out for sure," it wasn't quite so easy as it seemed. "You can see these kind of symptoms on head trauma patients as well so you need to carefully question the patient and someone that is familiar with them."

"There is also theory that memory charms can be broken with torture though it doesn't always seem that way. Any theories on why or why not it doesn't always work?" There was no right or wrong theory but Penny had a few of her own and it had partly to do with the skill of the witch or wizard casting the memory spell in the first place and the degree into which it was used.

Mandy smiled a little at the response, pleased that she was right. Not that she liked to gloat, and certainly not in a setting such as this one, but it did make her feel better to know that she was right. Plus, as second years, it was nice once in a while not to feel like a complete idiot.

When Penny started on about Professor Lockhart, Mandy nodded. She'd heard about it, back when she was at school, and since then the matter had been mentioned quite a few times in lectures. It was a good example, from what they'd studied, but she couldn't help but think how odd it was to study someone you know, or kind of know.

As Penny continued, Mandy followed along with the rest of the group, listening as she spoke. Nodding as she listened, Mandy repeated the words in her head, hoping to commit them to memory. The brain had always been an interest and memory spells were some of the most complex and fascinating charmwork.

At the question, Mandy found herself raising her hand again. "Intent?" She suggested once she was called upon. "There's theories that like with other spells intent is important, if the intent isn't to torture in order to break the charm, then it may not work."

Penny shrugged a moment as she got lost in her own thoughts about the subject they were studying. Maybe it was a Ravenclaw thing to do but she always liked to explore a thought when it first popped into her head.

"But the information isn't really important is it beyond our desire to know?" It wasn't like they were ever going to torture a person just because they wanted to break the charm. Penny doubted it would work any how because that would never be their pure intent. Not like it was with the Death Eaters who were famous for breaking charms.

"Any how, what kind of other supportive methods should we offer to people suffering from the memory charms?" There wasn't a right or wrong answer it was just something she was curious to get their thoughts on.
