Characters: Jake Dorny & Gwendolyn Montgomery
Setting: Jake's flat, Knockturn Alley
Rating: PG
Summary: Gwen pops over to Jake's
Status: In progress

The term 'april showers' certainly applied to this rainy, wet day in England. The weather had been getting increasingly worse now for weeks, and a part of Jake wondered how much of it was of natural doing. Peering out through the curtains of his two bedroom flat in Knockturn Alley, he watched as a thunderstorm raged outside, wind whipping round buildings and causing shop signs to flail. Shaking his head in bemusement, he wandered over to his kitchen area to start boiling a kettle.

It had been a weekday like any other, Malkins wasn't particularly busy but for the same middle aged women coming in to get fitted for new robes. It paid enough however and paid the bills, which Jake was able to do, doing something he enjoyed. It wasn't all bad. He had also been able to work and live closely to his best friend Gwen, whom had be-friended him (arguably by force) when the pair were in their second year. Jake smiled briefly as he remembered how she'd called him boring for being in the library, and he had told her she looked completely out of place - they had been friends ever since.

Preparing a mug for his tea he popped a bag in ready and set a teaspoon neatly against the side of it before sitting back down in his favourite armchair and picking up the latest Witch Weekly, a guilty pleasure of his. The flat buzzer sounded a few moments later and Jake cocked his head on one side. Pulling his reading glasses down his nose he sighed, though it was likely to only be one of few people. 'Gwen', sounded his gut. A smile flickered across his face and he rose, heading towards the intercom system. "Gwendolyn Montgomery, don't tell me you're out in this storm?", he joked incredulously.

Gwen was tired, and cold and just feeling rubbish. Things had been off since the carnival, and not just physically. Although the bone had healed in the week and a half since the attack, and the bruises were gone, her arm was still quite tender, and she just wasn't feeling her usual self. The weather certainly was not helping, and the fact that it was still April, and it was still quite cold was not helping. It was what had brought her to Jake's door that evening.

Apparating nearby, she walked the short distance to his door, and knocked before huddling a bit in the doorway not wanting to get wt. Yes, her clothing had water repelling charms on it, but that didn't stop it from being unpleasant. When Jake then answered she smiled brightly.

"What can I say, I had to see your face." Gwen said as she moved in to kiss him briefly before brushing past him and into his flat.

A moment passed in thought before Jake shrugged, "can't blame you of course", he grinned arrogantly, before closing his front door and latching it again from the inside. "Your coat?", he asked, forgetting himself for a moment, and he helped her out of it, despite the fact it had remained rain free. "Blinder of a storm out there", he mused, hanging it up on his coat stand, "Tea, or something stronger?", he asked, trying to judge what her day had been like.

Brushing past Jake, Gwendolyn flashed him a smile and started to take off her coat even before Jake asked for it. It was almost as if she owned the place, which given their friendship she generally acted like she did. When he asked for her coat, she handed it over, thanking him. "It's just awful, but it was worse in Pansy's, er my flat." She said pouting a little. Even though it was only a few doors away, it was large, and cold and empty when it was dark out. She would have popped by Adrian's, but he didn't need to see her when she was like this.

"We'll start with tea, then move to something stronger once we're a bit warmer." Gwen said with a shake of her head. Running her fingers through her curls, she fluffed them a bit, hoping they don't look as bad as she thought they might.

"Fine", Jake nodding, agreeing with her plans for the evening. It seemed likely she was staying, then. "I'll have Kratchet prepare your room for you"

Out of what seemed like nowhere a small house elf appeared, his eyes brimming with tears of joy at the sight of Gwendolyn. "Miss Montgomery is staying tonight?", he asked hopefully. Jake turned a frown on, "Did I stutter?", Jake replied in a huff. Despite the way Jake spoke to Kratchet at times, he was tremendously loyal, and as he was gifted to Jake on his 11th birthday he had followed Jake when he had left the Dorny home in Somerset. Kratchet had never said as much, but it was obvious to Jake that the elf felt as much for Gwen as he did himself. It was endearing, really.

Scurrying off down the hallway, Kratchet disappeared into the room Gwen always used. It was hers, to a point - half her belongings were in there at any rate. Jake smiled to himself, and shook his head. "Tea it is then", he murmured, crossing the room before eyeing Gwen for a moment, "perhaps some supper, too?" She was looking painfully thin of late, and no doubt partially down to the recent attack. "That hospital food can't have been all that"

Like most pureblooded ladies, Gwendolyn was accustomed to house elves, even if her family hadn't had one until her mother married her step father when she was nine. Even so, she knew well not to mind them much, but that didn't stop her from smiling at the created and murmuring a thank you when Jake ordered it. She turned to her best friend and gave him another smile.

"Thank you darling." She said to Jake as he started across the room. "Hospital food was horrendous." Gwen agreed with a frown before making a face at the memory. It had been quite bad and she'd been more than happy to go home where she could eat proper food. "But I'm really not that hungry right now." She added as she started to follow Jake across the room.

Jake scowled as she declined to eat. He looked over at the grandfather clock against the wall in the hallway. An odd piece to have in a small flat perhaps, but he liked the sounds it made - they soothed him. "Nonsense, it's only nine", he huffed, and moved over to his fridge to see what he could make her.

Twenty or so minutes later the pair were sat at Jake's dining room table which was set against the outer wall of his flat by the windows. Rain continued to hammer down, and Jake was tucking into his portion of a grilled salmon salad he had prepared for them both. He had eaten already, but Gwen never ate alone. Herbal tea had been poured and drank, and now they had moved onto a shot or two of whiskey.

Silence passed between them as they ate. It usually unnerved Jake, but Gwen was always easy to be around, whether they were talking or not. After a while the grandfather clock sounded half past nine. Jake yawned briefly, and drank down another glass of whiskey, pouring himself another immediately. "Better?", he asked, casting an eye on Gwens plate which was two thirds gone - not a bad effort.

"But I'm not hungry." Gwen said with a sigh, whinging slightly as she followed him into the kitchen. They both knew that there was no telling him no though, so she opted to lean against the counter-top instead as he decided what sort of food she would have to eat.

"It is delicious." Gwendolyn admitted after her third bite, surprisingly pleased at Jake had decided to make her eat, and happy that he was eating too so that it wouldn't be awkward. picking up her glass, she sipped the whiskey slowly, shuddering a little as it went down. Gwen tended to prefer the fruity type drinks, but nights like tonight called for the harder stuff.

They continued eating for a while, in silence but a comfortable one, as she smiled across at Jake. She supposed that she could be chattering away at him, but then she was a little hungrier than she cared to admit and it was rude to talk with your mouth open. "Loads." She said to answer his question as she put her fork down and picked up her glass again "You?" She asked, looking at his glass and giggling. "something the matter?"

"Just wasn't a fan of what happened to you that night", Jake replied darkly, in a poor attempt to not bring it up again. He noticed she still had marks on her arm. "Should never have happened", he added, eyes flashing in anger. His lips pressed together in a thin line as he recalled the evening, he hadn't gone himself due to a stock-take at the store - it had been a busy week and he hadn't thought to ask a date. He had found out the next morning when the Daily Prophet was delivered to his door and realised in horror Gwen must have been among the injured when he couldn't contact her.

The next week was spent in and out of Mungo's, bringing her magazines, and whatever else she needed. He couldn't shake the thought however that Adrian hadn't protected her. Anger caused bile to rise momentarily in his throat. He remembered feeling for a time that he had lost her - it had been horrendous.

"I know..." She said with a soft sigh. "The fortune teller was right though, it was rather turbulent, just wish we'd realised that she meant it to be so soon.." Gwen said with a shake of her head as she thought back on it. She shivered after a moment as she glanced down at her hand. In truth, she still had some bad memories, nightmares if you will about the evening. It was meant to be a fun evening, but it was really anything but fun in the end.

"I'm safe now." She said as she reached out for his hand, giving it a light squeeze. He had been really amazing. Between him, and Pansy she'd not been nearly as bored as she probably could have been, even if the nights alone in the hospital were dreadful and she'd been immensely worried about Adrian. "We both, are and that's all that really matters."

"Mmm", Jake replied dismissively. He was starting to feel things, and did not care to. Gwen was right, too, they were both alright. Taking a deep breath he exhaled loudly and smiled, his eyes meeting hers again. If she had not been here he would have undoubtedly fallen into one of his famous moods - but as luck had it...

"So other than almost getting yourself killed what else have you been up to?", he asked with a slightly serious tone to his voice. In the distance a crack of lightening sounded causing Jake's heart to stop for a moment. It was definitely closer than the last.

Smiling across the table at Jake, Gwendolyn picked u her glass again for another sip. At his question, Gwendolyn paused and considered the question. Where could she start. Most of the time she'd been whinging about her injury and the burns, and pointing out the different spots which were not healing properly, but somehow she doubted Jake would want a tour of her body. Gwen giggled top herself at the thought.

"Work, and then -" Gwen paused as the thunder sounded, involuntarily jumping in her chair. Her hand shook a little as she placed the glass back down. Trying to smile again, Gwendolyn shook her head to clear her thoughts. "Spent most of in rehearsal, had a fitting for my new costume too, but Kerry seems to be getting inundated at the moment and -" Gwen jumped again as thunder sounded again. "and didn't have much time, but adjustments had to be made, again. I still wish you were working with us."

Jake sat rather rigidly, holding in a curse word or two. After a moment he exhaled in a rather long and drawn out manner. "What on earth is going on tonight?", he gasped, putting a hand to his chest. "I would love to work with you too in theory love", he grinned, knowing what was coming next, "but let's face it, any more time spent with you would likely drive me potty", he laughed, a wide smile spreading across his face.

"I don't know." Gwen said with a small frown as she listened to the storm occurring outside. It was just making her jumpy. Gwendolyn gasped out loud at Jake's words before shooting him a look. "Jacob Dorny!" She said in outrage, shaking her head. "I would not! I would more likely make you sooo hot that you just couldn't stand it anymore, and don't you lie."
