Draco was pacing. He couldn't really help it. What a bloody mess this had turned out to be. He'd been pretty confident when he went in to speak with his parents that he'd be walking out with their blessing to marry Astoria, regardless of his initial reluctance to be married at all.

Instead, he'd been informed that his marriage had already been arranged, and it wouldn't be with Stori, who as the younger of two siblings wouldn't have much owing to her by way of inheritance. His mother had cooly informed him that after Mrs Greengrass had made some less than flattering remarks about Draco and his intentions towards Astoria, that they'd decided on Lily Moon. Yes, she was a former Hufflepuff, but she was from a very good family, their sole heir, plus she worked for a living, and was well respected in society.

No amount of arguing on Draco's part had been able to sway them from their decision, especially because they'd already made the announcement public. He had then been confronted with the evening paper, and seen it right there in black and white.

"Fuck!" he swore, screwing up the paper and flinging it into the corner. What the hell was he supposed to do now? Well, he supposed it was a good thing that he hadn't managed to seduce Astoria after all, though he hadn't thought as much at the time. He flopped onto the bed and covered his face with his hands. He stayed that way until he heard a timid knock at the door.

"Come in," he said, not moving.

Astoria had been lost and confused by the owled responses she'd received from Draco. Here, she thought things were going well. And, she came from a respectable family, so why was he telling her that things were a mess?

She'd taken one last look at her self in the mirror and made certain she wasn't sporting any wrinkles when a knock at the door to her room interrupted her. In walked the stooped and bent form of one of the HouseElves her family owned. He placed the Prophet in her hand and beat a hasty retreat from her room.

The headline caught her eye, large as life. It really was hard to miss. All color drained from Astoria's face as she continued to read the article. By the time she reached the end, Astoria read it again. And then again. As she finished a third time, Astoria folded the paper and crammed it into her purse. There was definitely going to be some explaining to do. Yet, she knew she didn't want to hear it.

Astoria Apparated into Diagon Alley, not far from the building she was supposed to meet Draco at. As she walked into the lobby, Astoria pulled the brim of her hat down as far as she could, as she tried to hide just who she was, in case she found her name written across the next headline in the paper. The lift took her up and she stood before the door a minute before she raised her hand to knock. how she could be so calm in a moment like this, she wasn't sure.

Draco's voice carried into the hall, and Astoria pushed the door inward. On the inside, Astoria made sure the door was shut and locked behind her. Without a word, she moved into the room and all but collapsed onto the couch.

He'd hoped that she wouldn't have found out, but rather than come to his side and ask what this was all about, he heard her moving to the sofa, as far away from his as she could, so he deduced that she had seen the Prophet. He sat up, swinging his legs around to the side of the bed.

"I had nothing to do with this, Stori. I told them I want to marry you, and they won't listen," he said, burying his head in his hands. "It's the potion. They seem to think the fastest way to forget I nearly married a Mudblood is to force me to marry a Pureblood."

Astoria sat there staring, unable to look away from Draco. She was numb inside. She couldn't figure out what was worse the fact that just hours ago, her life had seemed as though it was back on track, or that the statement 'Force me to marry a Pureblood' meant she was lacking in some way.

Eventually, she was able to tear her gaze away and lowered her gaze to her hands. her knuckles were white where they gripped the strap to her purse, the contents consisting of the article on her wand. At the moment, she couldn't decide what she wanted to pull more.

How had this bloody happened? Before he'd met Astoria, he'd been adamant that the last thing he wanted to do was ever get married, and now, somehow, in the space of three weeks, he'd been engagement three times. Okay, so one of those times had been a love potion induced blur, but that didn't change the fact that it was strange and surreal to be in this situation right now.

"They said something about your mother insulting me at the Gala, then said Lily was the sole heiress, plus she has her own business," he continued, seeing as she wouldn't speak.

He picked up the last owl from Pansy, and read it again. It was crazy; getting married to avoid getting married, but his parents hadn't given him any choice.

"Pansy's suggestion is we elope," he said, offering the owl to her. "Will you?"

"I knew she would ruin everything." Astoria muttered as she pushed herself away from the couch. She reached into her purse, her fingers brushing against the crumpled paper as she pulled her wand. Astoria pointed it at the door to their room, funny how she could think of it as their room, and cast whatever wards and charms she could think of to make sure they were safe within their little bubble. Safe from prying eyes or listening ears.

When done, she dropped her wand onto the couch and did her best to avoid coming into contact with Draco. She was angry, furious even. Ready to see red, could have even been used to describe how she felt, but none of that mattered.

"You have more at stake here than I do Draco. If I run away and do this, my parents will be angry, but they'll get over it. I know they'd try to use this to get their hands on your family's money. Either way, they won't disown me. You on the other hand, you need to be the one to think about this. Not only will your parents be furious, but think about the other people that are currently visiting Malfoy Manor. Any shame you bring down on your family could also be seen as shame unto them." Astoria growled and stomped her foot before she continued. "I'm not saying I won't do this, if its what you want. But, Draco, I won't let you put yourself in danger because of me either. I can't do that." She said, a bit hesitantly as she took a step towards him. Merlin help her, she wanted to do was hug him, to hold him close, she wanted the same from him.

Draco knew what was at stake. He also knew his parents wouldn't abandon him, or disown him for not listening to them. Astoria wasn't some Mudblood that would bring shame on the family. She was the perfect Pureblood bride, and once they were married, he was sure everyone involved would be supportive.

Perhaps, he should talk to the Dark Lord, though. He was busy, hunting down leads as the Potter's whereabouts, or something, and Draco was pretty sure the marital affairs of his followers weren't of any concern to him, provided they were suitable matches, which Astoria was.

"I don't think I could be happy without you," he whispered, reaching out to slide his hand over her waist and tug her closer. "I still mean it. I love you, and I want you. Marry me?"

Astoria nodded and curled into Draco's arm as he pulled her closer, her own arms tightening about him in the process. "I don't plan on letting go. So, I think you're stuck with me." She whispered as she nuzzled into his neck. "I love you Draco."

"You two are engaged, you're going to be expected to appear in public together." She sighed and pushed away from Draco as her imagination got the best of her. "You'll be hand in hand out and about in Diagon Alley, or cozy like at social functions. People are going to see me as the jealous ex-girlfriend." Pacing, she counted off the scenes as they played through her head.

Defeated, she stopped at the window and looked down on the empty street below them. It was then that something clicked. Something she'd forgotten about after Draco's first owl. "Draco Malfoy!" She cried out and whirled around on him. "You had me come out on the night of a full moon! I heard about the posters going up, this was the worst night to meet here. What if one of us ended up attacked out there?"

This was such a bloody mess! It was all he could keep thinking to himself as she pulled away from him and started her usual rambling. He sank onto the bed, feeling utterly useless. Trust him to fuck this up. He couldn't even fall in love and propose without someone getting hurt.

Her mention of the moon made his sit up, and walk over to the window. He'd forgotten all about that. Well, there was no way he was letting her leave this room now. It might be scandalous, but it was the only safe place for either of them right now.

"We'll just have to stay here until the moon sets," he said, reaching down to caress the back of her neck gently.

Astoria nodded as her shoulders slumped. Feeling defeated, she leaned into Draco and wrapped her arms around him and held him as if the world was trying to rip him away from her. "I don't want to leave." She whispered.

She refused to move, to life her eyes to search his face for answers, instead she examined the material of his attire as if the cut and weave of the fabric held the answers to her questions. "How am I going to be able to see the two of you in public like that?"

He knew how she felt. He didn't want to leave, either. Ever, actually. He could happily just hide out here with her until the world forgot about them both.

"I won't, simple as that," he said, his finger ghosting up her arm to play with the ends of her hair.

"You'll have to at some point. Or there will be talk. Unless you plan on running away tonight." She argued, sighing as she tilted her head back to give him a sad smile. "I think this is why I always ran away. I knew I'd never live up to the potential of other girls. I'm the second daughter, a nothing in the grand scheme of things."

"I love you Draco." She whispered, leaning in place a kiss to his cheek.

Last week, that kiss would have been on his mouth, and there wouldn't have been anything so chaste about it. He found it unsatisfying and wanted more.

"I would, if you wanted to," he said, cupping her face.

She was torn, there was a part of her that longed to do just that. Run and never come back. People didn't go against the plans set for them, not without becoming a scandal and a nothing in their world. That was what kept her from telling him what she wanted.

"The world is full of woulds, wants, and ifs." She closed her eyes to keep the tears that threatened to fall from doing just that. Her heart was breaking, she had everything and yet it was all slipping away. "If I could, I'd turn back time and live out the rest of our lives on the beach. I just want that happily ever after."

Draco would turn back time, too, and instead of fighting his attraction to Astoria, he would have asked for her right away, before Mrs Greengrass had a chance to insult him, and his parents, and then she'd be the girl he was engaged to, instead of Lily.

"So, lets go. You and me," he said. "To hell with all of this."

"We can't leave here. Not tonight anyway." Astoria wanted to, she would have given anything to do as he suggested. "If you feel the same tomorrow, we'll talk about it. I don't think you will, not once your head clears."

"We'll just have to find another way. Who knows, maybe she'll be attacked by a werewolf tonight, and then there won't be any need to worry." That, unfortunately was Astoria's poor attempt at a joke.

Draco chuckled. Not that he actually wished any harm on Lily, but if she were attacked, she would certainly be a less ban disirable match for him, and maybe his parents would release him from this ridiculous deal.

"I love you," he whispered, then he kissed her, softly, but firmly.

Astoria found herself smiling as Draco chuckled at her poor attempt at a joke. She didn't wish Moon dead, if she did, where would she buy her shoes? And it was that moment of lightheartedness that Astoria needed.

She relaxed as little, the tension in her body melting away as Draco's mouth found her's. A kiss that she returned, soft at first but growing into something more, something desperate. "Tonight.. you're still mine. I don't have to give you up until the sun rises." She managed to say as she pulled back, just far enough that her lips brushed his as she spoke.

"I love you too." Her words choked with the tears that longed to fall as she kissed him again. Her arms tightened around him as she did so.

He liked the way that sounded, being hers. He'd never thought he'd like that before her, and it just felt so desperately unlucky that he'd finally found someone he could love only to be forced to marry someone else.

"I'll always be yours," he replied, then pulled her tight, returning her kiss with fervour.

Maybe it was Draco's response, or perhaps the fact she couldn't stop the thoughts that sprang to mind. She wanted to have this night with him, to keep him all to herself, and yet she knew it was too late. The announcement had gone out and she was sure it was already spreading like wildfire. Draco Malfoy was engaged to Lily Moon. He wasn't her's. Not now. Not ever. Not unless they became the biggest scandal of their time, and she was too much of a coward to do that.

Once the tears began to fall, there was no stopping them. Astoria gasped, breaking their kiss and tried to push away from Draco. "I-I can't! Draco let go please. I can't do this."

He didn't let her go, but he did stop kissing her in favour of just holding her. He felt a bit like crying himself, and if it were at all permissible for a man to do so in the company of anyone other than a ghost, he might have.

"It's okay, Stori. It's okay. We don't have to do anything. You take the bed, I'll sleep on the sofa," he whispered, hopefully comfortingly, but he suspected the lump in his throat made it sound like more of a croak.

Astoria stood there, her face buried in his chest. Her shoulders shook as the tears continued to fall. She couldn't stop them, so instead, she held him. Her arms wound around his waist and she just held him. Finding what bit of comfort in his embrace that she could find.

"The bed's big enough, Draco." She managed to say in a sob. "Can't we... Can't you..." Just hold me, she long to say the words but found she couldn't.

"Alright, if you're sure," he agreed, finding the idea of holding her quite appealing. Surprisingly appealing, considering that all he'd been thinking about for weeks was sleeping with her, and how close he'd come to actually achieving that goal in Puerto Rico. "Come on, then. We can just talk, until we fall asleep."

He took her hand and led her to the bed, kicking off his shoes and waiting for her to do the same before he pulled her down with him. He tucked her against his body, her back to his chest.

"I am." She muttered, feeling absolutely defeated as she let Draco lead her to the bed. Once there, she bent to remove her shoes, the thud as they hit the floor loud in the silence that surrounded the two of them.

She slid into the bed and relaxed as Draco pulled her into him. The way she fit against him, caused the tears to continue to slip from her eyes. It just wasn't fair. She'd done everything right, never caused a spectacle of herself, never did anything really. And, between the fact she was the second born daughter - a burden on the family - and her mother's words... Astoria would never get the one thing she always wanted.

"I don't know what to talk about..." She whispered, her words choked with emotion.

Draco didn't know what to say, either. He was the idiot that had got them into this mess. If he hadn't been so stubbornly against everything, he'd have made his offer sooner, then he couldn't be forced into another marriage.

"Me, either," he whispered back. What was there to say? He just had to live with it until he could figure out a way to get them out of it.

The silence dragged between them as Astoria tried to keep her eyes open. She didn't want to sleep, but it was the early hours of the morning and she hadn't slept yet, so it wasn't much of a surprise when her lids began to droop. As time went by, she relaxed into Draco, the tension easing its way out of her body as she began to doze off. The silence was broken when she sighed, the words "I love you." slipping out in a low whisper as slumber claimed her.

Draco didn't sleep so easily, even with Astoria in his arm. This whole thing was a big crazy mess that he wasn't sure how he'd gotten himself into. He'd never thought he'd fall in love, and had always thought he'd be happy to marry whoever his parents chose for him. Now, he'd give anything to be able to chose.

Instead, he pushed his head onto one hand, propped up so he could watch her sleep. Eventually, the sunlight filtered into the room, and he knew that soon he'd have to wake her to get her home, but he didn't want to. He didn't want to ever leave here.
