WHO: James T. Kirk & Seven of Nine
WHEN: morning, close to afternoon
WHERE: astrometrics and hopefully not astrometrics for a change
RATING: TBA

He'd gotten up early. Something that wasn't necessarily unusual for him, especially not here and not while on board the Enterprise when duty rosters demanded the captain be awake before most of the morning shift even started crawling out of their beds and pulling on their uniforms. Instead of checking scans, however, he went out for a jog. He spent too much time in astrometrics running scans, watching that moon, trying to do more with the adjustments Gabriel had made to their equipment; far too much time -- as did Seven.

The captain showered after returning and dressed, moving into astrometrics to find her working at the consoles, as usual. She needed to get out more and he needed to ask her about what he'd promised Claire he'd talk to her about. This laser tag ordeal was getting a little out of hand in his opinion, but a promise was a promise and he was going to still play and see if he could get Seven to.

"Long shot, but find anything new this morning?" He asked as he walked in.

"No."

The answer was simple - one mere word - and yet it spoke volumes to the frustration felt by the woman who replied. It was the same every morning, which is why she was so frustrated, and her entire demeanor to those who truly knew her said as much.

Turning her attention away from the console, her gaze swept over Jim. Her expression appeared as neutral as it typically did. However there was a certain gleam to her blue eyes that all but screamed just how maddening she found the lack of progress, antiquated technology, and situation in general.

Before she could put her irritated thoughts to a voice, Seven looked back to the console. For a moment there was nothing more than the low beeps from the computer and clicks from the mouse and keys on the keyboard. After she'd finished entering in the information she'd been working on before he arrived, she spoke once again.

"You deviated from your morning routine," she commented, glancing over her shoulder at him. Her brow was slightly arched in silent curiosity. "Why?"

He caught that gleam, but didn't point it out. After months of being around the former drone, he'd picked up on how to read the subtle hints she would give, whether consciously or unconsciously, that others would miss. It was frustrating the hell out of him, too. He knew she was from a century a good hundred years after his own, but even with technology he was almost certain would still be perceived as primitive by her, he would have already had answers to this. Even with a shuttle, he would have the right sensors. Here, even with the modifications Gabriel had made, there was only so much they could do.

"Restless," was his answer as he came to stand next to her, peering at the displays on the screens. "Needed to get out. Needed to check some things."

He didn't like the answers and then he did. God, he hated how this place could do such a thing.

{ooc: i am so. sorry. i apparently wrote this up in wordpad then never posted it and really thought i had! ♥ }

"Restless." Seven spoke the word as though trying it out for the first time. It wasn't the first time she'd ever said it, of course, but she didn't use it often. She wasn't sure she'd ever truly felt it before, either. Or if she didn't, she didn't recognize the feeling as such.

"You are accustomed to activities which do not solely involve monitoring scans and extrapolating information from data streams." That was a statement of fact, not a question, as she turned her head to glance at him. Blue eyes swept across his form before meeting his own. "Captain Janeway often found herself feeling much the same when she was without a challenge for an extended period of time."

Returning her gaze to the screen in front of her, Seven hesitated a moment before speaking again. Not for lack of something to say, but rather to finish the task she'd been working on before deviating away from it to discuss something off topic. "Perhaps you should consider a... hobby," she suggested. "The studies I have done on the subject show that many find such a thing to be rewarding, as well as an effective way to separate moments of monotony many experience in their everyday lives."

Restless without a proper challenge? That was sort of it and sort of not. He had a challenge, a bit challenge, but no worthy leads to follow to solve. He was starting to come to terms with the prospect that getting everyone out of her might not happen for a while, though he wasn't ready to accept that such might not ever happen at all. They'd figure it out -- if not him, then someone -- it was just a matter of when. He no longer cared about being the one to solve the puzzle and be the hero, he just wanted to get out of this place, even if it meant leaving Seven behind to go back to their own respective times. Their different points in the time stream, nevermind in versions of that stream, was something he was all too aware of, but he felt that being with her now was better than not being with her at all.

"I was actually thinking about...teaching," popped out as he turned around to lean against the console. He turned his head to look at her. "At the university for the next semester session. There's a flex run that starts in October. I've got degrees in a handful of things and there's got to be something about instructing that makes for good captaincy practice."
