WHO: Spike and OPEN.
WHAT: One person who should never be bored.
WHEN: Evening.
WHERE: Outside of a video game arcade.
RATING: TBD.
STATUS: In progress.

In what little time that Spike had spent cooped up in this city, he had reached one very, very firm conclusion: despite all the people that were being zapped in and out of the place, it was incredibly dull for a creature who was used to spending his time averting apocalypses and making fun of the heroes behind their backs whilst attempting to do so. Taunting heroes. An amusing thing, surely, considering that Spike was sort of one of them. He didn't slaughter innocents - no that was yesterdays news - and he fought the evil. Sure, he was a big old prick about it half the time, but he got the job done, didn't he? Didn't dance around, acting all noble and boring about things. He'd leave business like that to Angel; Spike was better off doing the right thing and scramming off afterward.

Unless there were rewards for his good deeds. In that event, he'd be very keen on sticking around. And in his opinion? There was always supposed to be a reward lying around for the hero. Anti-hero. Whatever.

The anti-hero, at the moment, was lurking alongside a series of buildings caught in the middle of a rather dramatic debate based on whether or not tracking Buffy down would be a good plan. The plan in itself never used to be an issue. If Spike wanted to see her, he'd go see her - wanted around or not. But lately, it seemed, he was having issues. They'd started up back in L.A., when he decided that Buffy knowing that he was still alive was a bad plan. Now they had amped themselves up incredibly since his arrival here. She knew he was alive. Did she think him a pansy? Did that glorious exit he had made back in Sunnydale lose it's gleam in her eyes? Was she done with him altogether?

Boots scuffing against the sidewalk, Spike groaned in frustration and moodily pushed his hands through his bleached hair. The door of the building beside him swung open - a video game arcade - and a rather large, pumpkin shaped boy came trotting out with a pink blanket bundled in his arms. Being caught in the extreme wave of annoyance between his indecisiveness and the sheer knowledge that if he didn't go and see Buffy he wouldn't have a damned thing to do with himself anyway didn't stop Spike from taking in the boys appearance. A scarred brow rose upward and he immediately tilted his head to the side, examining the boy curiously.

"I don't even know where to start with you, Fluffy."

"Be nice, Spike," Dawn's voice rang out from behind the vampire. She had a small grin on her face as she said the words, knowing that even if Spike had planned on messing with the chubby kid at all, he no longer could in Dawn's presence. God forbid his bad influence would get back to Buffy, right? Not that Dawn spoke to her that much anymore, but that was neither here nor there.

She knew she probably shouldn't have been out by herself so late anyway, or that was what some random and respectable adult would surely say, but Dawn really wasn't too keen on listening to authority in the first place. She wasn't exactly rebellious -- that stage had passed, but not entirely -- but it was just the fact that no one seemed to be breathing down her neck in this place. She really felt like she could do almost anything she wanted with very little conseqeunces. Yeah, right, she would try it and then get caught immediately by a half dozen Scoobies that would seemingly pop out of nowhere.

The blanket. He could swipe it, dangle it over the kids head. Fluffy would be bawling in no time. He reached out with an arm and swiped for it, but a voice pounding in from over his shoulder easily turned the swing into a complete and total miss. Growling, Spike glanced back, only to find himself looking off at, for the very first time in what felt like ages, Buffy's kid sister.

"Aw, but this is me being nice," Spike retaliated, lips curling into a smirk.

Fluffy seemed to appreciate the distraction. Rather than fleeing immediately like any other sane child would have done, the boy reared up a foot and slammed it into Spike's knee.

"Why you little shi -" Spike turned angrily, only to find the boy galloping his way down the street, his blanket whizzing behind him in the wind like some sort of banner for chubby children getting the best of vampires everywhere. Scowling, Spike flexed his leg out a bit and turned back to Dawn with a glare. "Thanks. That was appreciated loads." Ruining his fun! How unbelievably rude.

Dawn winced at the sight of Spike's knee nearly busting right out from under him. She knew he could take care of himseld, it was Spike after all, but still. That had to hurt, super cool vampire or not. And then she winced again when he turned to give her a glare.

"Sorry... If I knew he was gonna turn out to be a brat, I would've let you...do whatever it was you were gonna do." She glanced back over her shoulder, but the kid was long gone by now. She was kind of annoyed with him as well, but there was really nothing that could be done about it now.

Looking back to Spike, she tried to play innocent and change the subject a bit. "So, what are you doing skulking around arcades this time of night?"

He rolled his eyes. No, she wouldn't have. Dawn would have pulled a Buffy on him, probably. Would've demanded that he put the kid right after he made the little fluffer burst into tears one good time. They might not have seen one another in ages, but Spike still had Dawn pegged as the sort who wouldn't stand for child harassment.

Even if it was fun.

"I'm not skulking," Spike protested, tugging up the collar of his jacket, "I'm thinking." He cast one final glare out in the direction in which the boy had vanished, then he turned his gaze back onto the young girl and arched a brow. "What about you? Big sis know you're out wandering the streets alone at night?"

Probably not. Then again, Spike didn't know much about what Buffy wanted and didn't want lately. He hadn't had a half decent conversation with her in...well, since not even before he had gotten here.

"Oh, you are so skulking," Dawn replied with half a smirk. "Thinking at the same time, but skulking, too." She wanted to ask him what he was thinking about outside of an arcade, but figured the answer probably wouldn't be a good one. Not that Spike was a baddie or anything, but he had the tendency to make trouble. And yes, Dawn still thought that was majorly cool.

She shrugged her shoulders when he questioned her, shoving her hands into the back pockets of her jeans. "Not really. Didn't think she'd mind too much, though." At the words, Dawn gave a roll of her eyes, as well. Buffy had been pretty quiet lately, keeping to herself. She lived in the same hallway as her sister, and yet she saw very little of her.

"Not skulking," Spike disagreed yet again. He didn't skulk. Skulking was for pansies like Angel - Spike was not Angel. Nor was he anything like him in any way, shape, or form. Quite honestly, that was something that the vampire took incredible pride in. "I was thinking. Then chubbycheeks came along and I decided I wanted to play. That's it. Got it, Niblet?"

Dawn appeared to be rather vague on her response in relation to Buffy. Spike, on the other hand, only found himself feeling more curious by the reaction. He had told himself that he was going to ask how she was, then shrug it off. That was the plan. He didn't want to come off as some desperate, head-over-heels, crazy in love ex who was so far into it that he didn't know when to move on. That'd be...well. Uncool. Of which Spike was the opposite of. "I'd disagree on that note," Spike responded, giving the arcade a once over. Didn't seem to be milling around with as many inhabitants as before. Upon reaching that conclusion, the vampire strolled over to the small set of stairs leading into the building and dropped down onto the top one casually. "Different city, different world. Doesn't mean there still aren't big, bad evils running afoot. Seems to me that you're sneaking about without her knowing. The mature part of myself frowns upon that, you know."

Dawn grinned, then lifted her hands up in defense. "Okay, okay. I got it. No need to get all bad moody here."

Following Spike towards the steps, Dawn sighed and lowered herself down next to him. She should have expected a bit of a lecture, even from Spike. He was awesome, yes, but he'd also become just as protective as Buffy over time. She couldn't get away with much with him, either.

"I didn't sneak out. I just...left without telling her. And I haven't come across any baddies here yet, which means there's no real reason for me to stay cooped up all day and night."

He didn't move when she joined him on the stairs. There was a very tiny amount of people within the city that Spike felt he enjoyed conversing with thus far - tiny meaning about...well, zero - so being here with Dawn, who he knew he'd be able to stand to a point, was all right by him. It helped keep him from dashing off to find Buffy like some sort of desperate moron anyway, which was always a plus. Clasping his hands together, Spike leaned forward, tipped his head to the side to look over at her, and smirked.

"You really think that because you haven't run into any that they don't exist?" He snorted, shaking his head. "Kid, there are baddies everywhere you go. They don't have to be all..." He lifted his hands and made a mocking vampire face before shrugging and settling back into his former position. "There's bad everywhere, like I said. Thought you'd be clever enough to figure that one out." He reached out with a hand and playfully ruffled her hair. "Guess that realistic guidance went out the window when I did, eh?"

Dawn rolled her eyes, though she was wearing a smirk at the same time. She could never really be completely annoyed with Spike, since he went about being super-protective in a way that didn't make her feel like a three-year old. Well, sometimes. Most of the time he was pretty good about it, though.

"I know that," she insisted, swatting his hand away and smoothing her hair back down on top of her head. "But I get bored, too. You can only watch so much TV and read so many books, you know?" A smirk. "Of course you know, you're out here taking a walk after dark, too. And not just because of the whole anti-sun vampire thing, either. You have to get bored in this place, too."

"Well, let's see," Spike started, stretching his legs a bit, "there aren't any apocalypses to avert, no one around here wants to bet with kittens, and I don't like anyone. Definitely bound to leave one bored, isn't it?" Spike could do the whole social thing. Hell, he was doing it right now. It was merely a matter of wanting to that was the problem. He didn't like people much. They were incredibly stupid most times and Spike didn't see much point in putting in the effort to get to know people when he knew that they were likely all going to be the same. Here, anyway. That was what he had determined just from peeking through those boards. Every last one of them. Confused, scared, annoyed. No one special. Unique.

No one like -

...nope, he wasn't going to even think it. Buffy could come to him. Yeah!

"Next time," Spike decided, "you tell someone to come out with you when you decide to go roaming about at night out of boredom or whatever it is that's got you out here. That's all I ask."

"Then what's my excuse?" Dawn asked, a slow grin forming on her mouth. "I don't do much to help avert apocalypses, I don't bet with kittens, and...well, I like people."

This was what she'd been looking for, just a conversation with someone she enjoyed talking to, hanging out with a friend. She wasn't going to actually say that out loud, heaven forbid she would get all mushy in Spike's presence, but it was the truth. Sure, a lot of people from back home were here in the city, but did Dawn really spend much time with them? Not really. She knew they all had their own things to do here, and that was fine. Great, actually. But she would be lying if she said she didn't feel a little lonely. It wasn't something she liked thinking about, though. It brought back too many bad memories.

"Alright, alright. I will. Promise."
