Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Cassidy and Mac
Where / When: The Best Buy, this afternoon.
Why: Calm yourself. Cassidy is not stalking her. Random bumping in to each other at the Best Buy.
Rating: Mild, some language. WIP

With the possibility that Heather was gonna be his roommate, Cassidy had immediately felt the need to buy more stuff. He recognized that is was purely an 09er response, but hey it was better then blowing shit up. He was contributing to the economic health of Colligo and totally being a good citizen.

Of course the first thing he did was pick up the deluxe Blu-Ray version of Dumb and Dumber, and made a mental note to email Veronica. With Logan's marriage proposal out there and no sign of Veronica lately, Cassidy had to assume she was gone. It was weird to realize he missed Veronica -- he had instilled a certain denial in his relationship with her, purposefully mistaking her watchfulness toward him as concern. It was nice to have a big sister. At least Veronica didn't call him a fag and leave bruises from the constant shoulder punches. He found Dumb and Dumber, and was browsing through the other titles, when he randomly looked up and there was Mac.

She hadn't changed. The streaks in her hair, the focused intelligent look on her face. How had someone like her ever liked him? Cassidy was struck again by the random miracle that she had. He had to take a deep, settling breath, and started to move to the exit before she saw him. There was no mistaking that she didn't want to see him, and Cassidy was terrified that she would think the worst, that he was following her. He had to get out.

Mac was browsing the DVDs in the aisle between him and the exit, and as Cassidy edged around, trying to stay out of sight, he noticed she was browsing TV series box sets. He stopped. She was awfully close to the V section. Shit. She would be PISSED if this was how she found out about the fictional thing. He couldn't just stand there and watch it happen. Gathering his courage, Cassidy took a step toward her. "Um. Uh. Mac."

Mac's power cord was acting suspiciously as if it no longer wanted to work, and instead of suffering through intermittent moments of indecision she had decided to go purchase a new one. She located the nearest Best Buy, purchasing over the internet would take too long, not to mention the aforementioned problem, and made her way down to the store.

She quickly located the appropriate cord, perused the other computer products for sale. She proverbially drooled over the latest advances in Mac computers, mentally picturing Justin Long walking her through the specifications, now that was a thought... Before she made her way through the rest of the store.

She wasn't really planning on purchasing any DVDs, but just wanted to see what was out. She had reached the television series on DVD and something caught her attention... there was no way Veronica's face would be on a box set of some DVD... But her name was across the cover... Mac started reaching for the box...

"Um. Uh. Mac."

Mac knew that voice anywhere. She whipped her head around to face Cassidy.

"Cassidy!" she'd always called him by his real name and not that stupid nickname. She didn't know what to say next... Cassidy looked no older than the last time she saw him... "I..." and then memory hit her, "Are you following me?"

Ah, damn, it was good to look into Mac's face again, but at her words Cassidy took a step back, hands out in placating gesture. God knew what Logan and Veronica had said to her, shit Veronica had called him a monster once already. "No! Not at all. Um. I was buying stuff and I saw you.. and the uh..."

He paused. Interesting. How to proceed with this? It was so good to atually TALK to Mac and Cassidy wanted to dive in, explain every last detail and beg for forgiveness. On the other hand, the box set for Veronica Mars was right there and Mac deserved to be eased into the whole ficitional thing. It was an easy choice to make, as asking for forgiveness set him up to be NOT forgiven, and talking about fictional universes was a much safer subject.

"Okay, here's the thing." He leaned over and grabbed the DVD set, looked down to see his thumb right over Dick's face on the back, and it made him feel better. "Mac? You and Ron Weasley have a lot in common." He held up the box to show her. "You're both sidekicks."

Mac's first instinct was to back away as quickly as possible, but Cassidy had backed up first, raising his arms in an effort to make her feel at ease, both gestures very confusing to Mac when compared to her last experience with the boy in front of her - and that was odd, Mac was twenty now... Cassidy still seemed to be the seventeen year old he was when he jumped-

That whole line of thinking was dragging Mac down a bad path. Fortunately Cassidy was talking again, and waiving something distracting in front of her, the DVD she had been looking at before Cassidy said hi.

Which wasn't actually more comforting.

"What?!" Mac reached down and grabbed her own copy of the series to look at. She gapped at the box in disbelief. Why was her face staring back at her in glossy advertising fashion? "This has to be joke!"

She looked back up at Cassidy, a thought struck her, "You- you did this?!" It was the only conclusion her brain could draw at that moment.

"What?" Cassidy gave a short, uncomfortable laugh. "No! Not at all." He paused, considering, and made a pleased face. "And while I'm flattered that you would think I could do something like that, I have to say no." To be safe, he took another small step away, studying Mac's face covertly, noticing the way her body had filled out more. Again he thought about the unknown Max, and felt a touch of jealousy. That this grown up Mac had found someone to match her.

"Think about it. Harry Potter? Willow Rosenberg? BUFFY? They're the real thing, Mac. This place is like... an alternate reality to ours. Those guys are really who they say they are." He pointed to the box. "And just like we view them as fictional, so are we." He made a face again, thinking about the unfairness of it. "And Veronica is the hero of the story. So not fair."

Mac had thought about the appearance of Harry and Neville - that was odd - but she thought it was some strange isolated thing, not that it applied to her!

"So... I'm..." her brain searched for the right word, but the one it kept coming up with just didn't seem right - this was way beyond finding out she was switched at brith, "FICTION?!"

Okay, this was just not happening. With her hands clutching the DVD box she shut her eyes, and tried to tell herself that this was all a dream. She would wake up and she would be back at Hurst, and none of this will have happened.

She tentitively opened her eyes...

Cassidy was still standing in front of her, and she was still in Best Buy holding a DVD series wherein she was a character.

"Oh... Hell!" she didn't know what else to say and looked back up at Cassidy - why did it have to be Cassidy to tell her this, Veronica and Logan were so dead.
