Who: Logan Echolls and Lilly Kane.

When: Late Wednesday evening.
What: Chatting.
Status: Incomplete.

It took Logan a bit to understand the map, but it was programmed into the GPS of the XTerra and he got to Lilly's building fairly quickly. Hurried in to the elevator and pressing the button to get in and then to get to the top floor profusely until the doors close and he was being carried upward. He'd looked at the board briefly, saw that Veronica had misunderstood him but he knew that was a small fire to put out. He needed to see Lilly for himself and he needed to talk to her and hear her laugh and feel a hundred percent, at most, less guilty for what had happened to her. He'd loved Lilly, before anyone else and he couldn't imagine something like that just being gone. He knew even if it hurt, Veronica of all people understood. Hell, that was why she was hurting.

He darted off when the doors dinged and opened and scrambled, reading door to door until he found the number she had given him. Took a deep breath, prepared for Weevil to open it and give him hell for falling for the trick. As long as no one tried to shoot him in the dick again, he'd live. But he just had to see her for himself. Logan raised his hand and knocked on the door gently, then dropped it into his pocket and paced furiously outside, trying to decide what was or wasn't an appropriate greeting for seeing your ex, previously dead girlfriend for the first time in several years.

Lilly Kane was not normally a girl who did nevous, but yet she was as she paced the length of her apartment. Logan. Logan was coming to see her. Even though she had tired, and failed to fool him, to brush this whole entire thing off and tell him to go see Veronica he still wanted to come see her. It wasn't that she held on to some idea that magically everything would be fine, that she could slip back into her life right where she left off (okay, maybe there was a little bit of her that hoped he'd take one look at her and forget all about Veronica, but she told it to be quiet because it was Veronica and Lilly owed her everything). But she wanted to make things okay. Every good memory she had of her life was of him, Veronica and Duncan. Everything that had flashed through her mind as she laid dying by the pool had been them. She didn't dare hope that Duncan would show up and she desperately wanted to make things right with what she did have.

Even if that meant swallowing down a whole hell of a lot of feelings she still had for Logan and stepping back so Veronica could be happy. Lilly would not be that girl to her best friend. Hell she refused to be that girl to Logan. They were all she had.

Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest when she heard the knock and she practically sprinted to open in, standing motionless for a moment as she just looked at him. Logan Echolls. A grin spread across her face. "Oh my God, you're really here," she said, which was a little silly because he hadn't been the one six feet under. She all but launched herself at him, throwing her arms around him in as tight a hug as her she could muster. Screw standing around awkwardly.

Logan didn't hold back, his arms tightened immediately around her when she took her leap and he held her tightly. "Oh, Lilly." Buried his face in the curve of her neck and she SMELLED like Lilly and was warm Lilly. The last time Logan had looked at Lilly she'd been in her casket. Cold, dry. Her hair arranged to hide the gash in her head, that ugly fucking yellow dress and the casket so surrounded by flowers that they left some inside of it for her to take down into the ground with her. She was alive now. None of that funeral parlor makeup on her face, no gash, no dress. Lilly as he had known and loved her.

He pulled back and set her on her feet (having lifted a little when he'd hugged her). Looked at her with dark eyes, still stunned and damn near speechless. "It's you. You're. . alive, I. . .Oh God Lilly, I'm so sorry." He grabbed her to hug again. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there. I'm so sorry I didn't stop him and. . .I. . .Oh fuck!" He nearly cried, his throat was all tight and painful because he wanted to cry. But he couldn't allow it.

"I knew it was over, I came and I watched you. .at the car wash. I wrote the note, I just wanted you to be happy. And you looked happy there." Remembered when he told Veronica, his hair blowing in the wind. Backup breathing against his legs. "Oh God I missed you. I'm so sorry he hurt you too, Lilly. I never would have let him hurt anyone else if I. . had I. . .I just didn't know."

She couldn't help but just keep grinning as he hugged her, even if the entire situation was beyond fucked. She was alive, she had her best friend, she even had Logan in a way. It was some shinning second chance, a chance for her to make up for all the crap she had done in her first go around. She knew she couldn't change things, she couldn't take back that she had cheated on someone she loved, that she had done it with his father of all people. But at least she had the chance to be a better friend to Logan than she had ever been a girlfriend.

Lilly pulled away and shook her head when he started apologizing. She reached up and wiped the tears that had fallen down her face, some weird mixture of pure joy, regret and hope. "Logan... don't. It wasn't your fault, I would never in a million years think it was your fault," she assured him. It was her fault, her stupid naive choice to get involved with Aaron.

Logan shook his head and reached to brush some hair from her face. "No it was him, all him, he was so. . he was out of his mind robbing the world of you, Lilly. It was so hard." He realized he was only standing halfway inside and giving her a gentle nudge he walked in the rest of the way. "I didn't. . I felt terrible and your dad. . .he took a lot of shit when it happened, he thought Duncan did it. And Veronica. .God she fought so hard to figure it out, nearly got herself killed in the process. Aaron was not guilty in the trial but. . .Duncan, he paid someone to take him out."

That was no easy topic for Logan. His dad was an asshole and a sick bastard but he hadn't wanted him to die. Not like that. He'd struggled with it for weeks after only to smile and shrug when Veronica would ask him about it between heated kisses. That thought made him look at Lilly. "I'm sorry. . .sorry if me and Vee hurt you. I know you'll say you understand but it's gotta be hard. . I don't. . .I don't know how it happened, Lilly but. . I love her. I've fucked up a lot and hopefully she can get past it."

"Logan I..." she started and faltered, deciding instead to move back into the apartment so they could sit and talk instead of just hanging out in the entrance. It was so hard to take it all in. To deal with all the fallout and still catch herself feeling like she had to remember how to breath. Death had been easy, she hadn't been lying to Logan when she had said after it had been nice. Restless but nice. She could remember fleeting things, knowing she wasn't completely there but knowing it was coming. And then it had just been nice. Warm, soft. All the things life had never been.

She sunk down into the sofa and tucked her legs under her. Of course she understood. Veronica and Logan, it made sense. He needed someone strong, he needed someone like her to make it through. She would never deny them that, not now. But it didn't make it hurt less.

"I'm not mad Logan, I mean, I was gone a long time for you guys, I would be angrier if you hadn't moved on, either of you." She let out a slow breath and glanced around the room before looking back to him. "I just missed a lot, and that hurts."

Logan watched her for a brief moment before he crossed to the sofa as well. Pulled her upward easily to sit behind her and pulled her back into his arms. Had held her like this so many times as kids, when life had sucked and Lilly had been all he really had. He settled his chin on top of her head. "God, Lilly, I know it must hurt. I wish I could take that pain away."

Ran has hands soothingly up and down her arms. "I just. .want you to be okay. After everything you went through. You know Veronica wants that too. We've just. .like I said. There was shit and I think all the back and forth has just worn her down." Nuzzled her head with his chin. "So let's get from here to. . .getting through it, or something. We can get through it, babe."

She leaned back into him when he pulled her into his arms. She could do this she decided. She could be the bigger person and not be a bitch about this. And it wasn't like they would love her any less, she wasn't losing them, it was just, different.

"I will be," she promised him. "I got a second chance Logan, I'm not really planning on spending it being upset about everything all the time," she said and grinned. She turned her head a little so she could look up at him. "And it's not like we can't be friends," she pointed out. "Don't think you're getting rid of me that easy Logan Echolls."

"Last thing I want after the past few years is to get rid of you, missy," Punctuated the sentenced by kissing the top of her head chastely, reached to rub her shoulders gently. "We'll always be friends, Lil, the very best of them. You, me, Vee. Maybe Duncan will show up some day and we'd be the Fab Four all over again. It'll be epic." His hands paused a little and he gave a soft shiver.

Veronica was his epic. Their story so rocked by the events all around their lives, he sighed as he thought about how she was likely taking this. Wished he knew how to make her trust him more. But that was her. There wasn't much at all that they could do about it. He looked to Lilly with a gentle smile. "You're going to have to help me soften up Mt. Vee."

She didn't even want to think about Duncan, how much she wished for just that to happen. Especially after what Veronica had told her. Duncan had a baby. Her brother had a kid, it seemed so surreal and Lilly ached to meet her niece.

Lilly laughed at his request. "Hey, I'm not the one who slept with Madison Sinclair," the obvious distaste to her tone. Lilly had never, ever understood the appeal of Madison.

Logan froze at that, swallowed heavily. "You know. . .?" Of course she did, Veronica and her were always quick to tell one another everything he wished they wouldn't. He sighed. "It wasn't. . .It's not like I. . it was just a really, really big mistake." He told her softly, remember the tears in Veronica's eyes. The days without her and then seeing her with Piz at Parker's birthday party.

He sighed deeply. "Yeah I guess you're right. It's on me. I just don't know what to do to ix it." Started to ease up, stroked her hair again. "You women are a fucking mystery, Lills."

"Well clearly," she drawled in response to his mistake comment. Madison fucking Sinclair. God, Dick had put his, well dick there, if that wasn't enough she didn't know what was.

"Of course we are, more interesting that way," she said and grinned before she moved to sit beside him, legs tucked under her so she could look at him while they talked. "You beg, you grovel, that would be a start," she offered. "And if you break my best friend's heart again we will have words," she tried to threaten, even went so far as to shake her fist and give him a glare but it all fell very, very short. Logan and Veronica were adults (literally now) they'd figure it out. And Lilly knew she hadn't the heart to even be serious about her threat.

Logan smiled a little, turned his nose down into her hair to nuzzle her scalp. God she SMELLED like Lilly. This was almost too scary. He kissed the skin and pushed up, bringing her with him to their feet. "Well, you have made several solid points and one thing I've learned in all my college learnin', those tend to mean something or another."

Turned her to hug her tightly, still in the shock of Lilly, and life and being in this strange place where Veronica seemed to have finally calmed down a bit. And gotten more jumpy all at the same time. "I should go grovel then. But if you need me I bet that board will come in handy, okay? Anything, Lils. You just shoot me a message and I'll be here. I'll never let anything happen to you again."

She hugged him back just as tight, her face buried into his chest and just took a moment to remember how amazing her friends had been, the real ones. She felt safe there, with Logan, knew he meant what he said, that he would never let anything happen to her. But he had things to take care of and she knew she had to send him on his way.

Lilly let go of him and pulled him by his sleeve to the door with a laugh. "Got it," she assured him, and grinned. "Now go grovel because I remember you emo and it's not pretty," she teased.
