Stefan wasn't sure if he wanted to see Elena yet. He did want to see her, just not like this. They had worked so hard when she was here before, and were on the verge of getting back together and that had felt so good. There was no more Elijah, and trust had returned, along with acceptance, and they were in a good place. It had taken a long time to get over losing her, and he had nearly snapped. Lexi had straightened him out the way she always did, and he improved. Now it was different. He knew it just by talking to her. Although the last time she was here, she was also a vampire, this was a little bit more involved, and once again, they were starting over.

Pouring himself another drink, he waited at the kitchen table. He didn't really want to do this in his brother's house, but since he couldn't be anywhere else, he didn't have a choice. He did appreciate the fact that Lexi would be coming along. She had been a rock. He wasn't sure what he would do if she suddenly vanished again. Afterward, maybe they could all figure out why Elena couldn't drink from a bag. He was trying to think of any vampire who couldn't drink from a bag. He didn't have any answers, and he wasn't sure who could be the new human feed bag.

The door started to swing open.

It took the time of a lifetime for Stefan to come into view on the other side of the door. It didn’t seem to matter. It didn’t give Elena enough time to brace herself for seeing Stefan again.

With the door no longer a barrier between them she looked up at the man she loved but wasn’t sure she loved. It was hard enough breaking up with him the first time. She wasn’t sure if she could do it again. Especially when she had only broken up with him to explore her feelings for Damon. She already knew that wouldn’t be possible for her in Colligo. Not without hurting Caroline, she was sure that Damon didn’t even want to anymore. It had been two years for them.

“It seems like I’ll have plenty of time,” she said as she walked in. “Stefan...” She started to speak but when she turned to face him the words escaped her.

Stefan had been through a lot with Elena in Mystic Falls, and even more here. They had history that she wasn't aware of. She had something with Elijah for awhile, and he had broken up with her, exploring other options. It had hurt him, more than he ever admitted. He was dreading going through it all over again.

"It's really good to see you," he said, nearly choking on the words himself. It had taken him a long time to get over losing her again when she was taken away. He wanted to hug her, or just hold on, just for a minute. Instead, he turned and headed for the sofa, patting the seat next to him.

"This place is a shock to everyone. I have been here a few times, enough for people to see my really bad side. " He was not happy with that, but he had to accept it. "I've kicked the ripper to the curb, at least for now." It had been really hard to get through, but each time it was easier than the last. He was used to the struggle, and the internal debate.

He looked up, wanting to say something more, but he was having trouble getting the words out himself. "I know you didn't come to talk about the beautiful weather."

This wasn’t Stefan.

He was ‘trying’ to act like he knew there was nothing wrong with her. At least that was how it felt as she watched him move around the apartment. He wasn’t doing that well. It was as if he knew that she was there to tell him. She lightly sighed, “It’s good to see you again too.”

She was about to move to hug him when he moved towards the couch.

Okay....

“Stefan, it’s... I,” she took a moment to collect herself. It was so much easier the first time she did this. She didn’t know if she could do it again. “This morning I broke up with you.”

Stefan allowed a small smile, but it was one that was also sad. He didn't respond for a few minutes. "Right," he said at last, unable to come up with anything better. "Again."

He looked at her carefully, trying to decide if he should tell her about her previous trip here or not. He decided to, but with minimal information. "We have done that before here. I broke up with you actually. How is that for a twist?" He omitted the part where they figured it out, and the part about Elijah. He wasn't about to open that can.

"What happened?"

Elena took a deep breath and turned her head away from her. "I don't know if I want to be broken up anymore," she said knowing that she was sending off mixed messages. She didn't want to be the only reason they didn't break up was because Damon was with Caroline. It wasn't fair to Stefan.

"I've been feeling different," she paused as she got up the courage to say it and then she chickened out, "about you. Since I woke up a vampire I have been this project, not your girlfriend. Everything thing I do lately is wrong."

It was part of the reasoning that she hadn't told him back home. She didn't want to tell him about her feelings for Damon. Not here.
