WHO: Lilly Desange & Illyana Rasputina
WHAT: Looking for Mama.
WHEN: Mid-afternoon.
WHERE: The park, to start with.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress
NOTES: Some spoilers for "Mama" are behind the cut. Don't read if you don't want to be spoiled.

After spending the night with people she didn't know, even if they seemed perfectly nice, Lilly had woken with the determination to find Mama. Crawling out from underneath the bed she'd been given, as Lilly hadn't slept in an actual bed since she was one and wasn't going to start now, she had made her way to the nearest window and peered outside. Mama was out there, somewhere. Lilly just knew it. Maybe even Victoria, too. She just had to find them. Then, they could all go away together and be a family again.

Ignoring the small voice in the back of her mind that whispered she wasn't supposed to use the window, but rather the stairs, when she wanted to go outside, Lilly did precisely that. A few moments later, she was on the streets. Almost immediately, someone noticed her and tried to approach. Which a loud screech, coupled with a swiping of her hand as though she were some sort of wild cat trying to claw them to pieces, she had scurried away as quickly as she could. A few moments of running later, the yards she was cutting through went away and Lilly found herself at the entrance of a place that made her really and truly smile.

Trees. There were trees everywhere! Giggling, she reached out and ran her fingers down the trunk of the nearest one, craning her neck to peer up at its top. The leaves were mostly gone, the branches covered in a light smattering of snow. The look was so similar to that of the forest that she'd called home that Lilly felt positively giddy just looking at it. Mama was here. She just knew it.

"Mama?" she called out, making her way with steadied steps further into the park. She caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of her eye and, smiling, turned toward it. "Mama!" she exclaimed, running toward whatever was up ahead. Unfortunately, as she drew closer, she realized it wasn't her mama but was just a playground, filled with giggling children having a snowball fight. Lilly whined in the back of her throat then immediately dropped into a crouch amidst the snow-covered shrubbery in order to hide when a few kids turned toward her. With a wary gaze, she watched as one of the adults began moving toward her hiding spot.

By the time they reached where she was crouched, though, Lilly was already gone. Back through the trees, deeper into the park, she ran and ran and ran until she finally reached a clearing. Coming to a stop in the middle of it, the six-year-old turned in a slow circle and peered upward with a curious gaze. "Mama?" she tried again, head tilting a bit as she listened for any sort of response. When there was none, Lilly's lower lip trembled and she sniffled as she slowly dropped into a crouch in the snow. She was going to stay there, she decided, until Mama found her.

Hearing the crackling of underbrush as someone approached, Lilly glanced over her shoulder with wide, curious eyes. She held her breath, prepared to bolt at the first sign of danger or trouble, but stayed where she was until the interloper revealed themselves. After all, for all she knew, it could easily be Victoria coming back with a promise to never leave her and Mama ever, ever again.

Since Illyana didn't work, she had time to herself outside of the enforced domesticity. Cold weather never bothered her-- after all, she was Russian by birth and light snow was nothing compared to the extremes of Limbo.

She wasn't much for sentiment, but forests dusted with snow still had a certain appeal for her. A lone tree in a clearing would always make her think of the one that Ororo had grown out of magic. Those old days were on her mind as she walked through the woods, heading for a clearing that she'd found before. She stayed clear of the playground-- too many happy children was unsettling.

When she arrived, she unexpectedly saw a young child crouched low in the snow, like a wild animal on alert for predators. It gave Illyana another pang of sentimentality. A little lost girl? She was very familiar with that.

She stayed still and quiet at first as she regarded the child, not wanting to startle her.

At the sight of someone who both wasn't her mama, her sister, or even the people she had stayed with the night before, Lilly inched backward on her haunches and crouched even lower to the ground. Her fingers, mostly hidden by the almost-too-long sleeves of the coat she wore, curled ever so slightly. Her gaze remained fixed on the woman standing there, her expression an extremely wary one.

Making a soft grunting sound in the back of her throat, she shifted her weight from leg to leg in an anxious gesture. "Mama," she whispered in a somewhat pleading tone. "Lilly stay. Mama come."

Her message was a fairly simple one. She wanted her mama. She would stay put, her mama would show up, and that was that. Unfortunately, she lacked the ability to explain that in any semblance of a clear fashion. Of course, she didn't realize that fact. Communication with both Victoria and Mama had always been easy for her. She didn't understand why others didn't just get it, too. Whimpering slightly, she inched back a bit. Lower lip trembling slightly, she repeated, "Lilly stay."

When Lilly got more defensive, Illyana took a few steps backward to give her more distance. She kept her own posture relaxed, trying to make it clear that she didn't intend to come after Lilly.

It was difficult for her to tell if Lilly just didn't speak much English or if she didn't speak much at all. English wasn't Illyana's own first language; she was fluent now, but she wasn't sure how to judge a child's command of it.

"Are you Lilly?" Was the girl calling Illyana that, telling her to stay where she was, or saying that the girl herself was Lilly and wasn't going? It sounded as though she wanted her mother-- was the child going to wait there for her mother or just wanted her in general?

"I am Illyana." She didn't expect the child to be able to say the name fully.

Lilly grunted at the question before hesitating, remembering something Victoria had told her after they'd been taken from their home and expected to do things like walk upright, bathe regularly, and even sleep in a bed. When someone asked you a question, you were supposed to answer them with more than just a noise. She didn't really know why. Mama had never had trouble understanding her. Still. If Victoria said it, it had to be true. So, after a few seconds, she slowly nodded her head. "Lilly," she said softly, raising a hand to point to her own chest.

Falling silent again, she studied the woman before her for a moment. Slowly, she inched forward again, resuming her original spot in the snow. The trees were still close enough that, if she had to, she could scurry up one if she had to get away. That alone kept her from fleeing immediately.

"'yana," she repeated the woman's name as best as she could manage. Words still felt strange in her mouth. Tilting her head to the side a bit, Lilly studied Illyana for a moment. "'yana stay?" she asked, curiously.

"Hi, Lilly." 'Yana definitely be close enough. After all, she was used to the other New Mutants calling her that, and Kitty as well.

She stayed in place and let Lilly decide how much to approach her. She had to consider how she should treat the child. In a conversation with Loki, she had mentioned lies serving a purpose. It might turn out best not to be honest with this child about whatever the situation was.

"Illyana stay. Lilly lost? Where's Mama?"

More questions. Lilly really didn't understand why all of these people liked to talk so much, and ask so many questions. Trying to communicate was difficult enough for her without trying to answer specific things in a way that made sense to anyone other than Victoria or Mama. However, she had begun to do so with Annabelle, when Victoria had explained she had to at least try, so Lilly figured the same probably applied here. When someone asked a question, you did your best to answer.

Blinking slowly, she stared at Illyana for a long moment as she struggled with the best way to respond. Then she finally sighed and shook her head with a slightly sorrowful look. "Mama gone," she said. Then, she pushed herself a little further and tried to form a complete sentence to answer the other question she'd been asked. The words ultimately came out a little jumbled but it was the best she could manage. She just hoped it was enough.

"Lilly stay with Clint." Rising up ever so slightly from her haunches, she turned her gaze toward the park's exit then, slowly but surely, she pulled her PDA from her pocket and held it out in front of her. "Lilly stay in tall house."

Unless there was a different Clint in a tall house, Illyana was sure that Lilly must mean Clint Barton in the Avenger's Tower, or the Stark Tower, whatever they were calling it here. In an attempt to be sure and to limit what words Lilly had to use, Illyana decided on another way to check that. She crouched in the snow and selected a stick from the ground, then sketched a rough outline of the Tower and its lettering. She looked over at Lilly and tapped the outline with the stick.

Lilly crouched forward until she was resting primarily on the balls of her feet, a sense of wonder on her face and the beginnings of a small smile tugging at her lips as she watched the woman draw. Tilting her head a bit to the side, she finally nodded. "Tall house," she confirmed, pointing at the level of the Tower where she'd been staying.

Sitting back on her heels, still clutching her PDA tightly in one hand, she gave Illyana a small, but sincere, smile. "Lilly stay," she said with a decisive nod. "Mama come." A pause and she tacked on, "Soon. Mama come soon."

It seemed that Lilly had the simple, innocent faith of a child that all would be well in the end. Maybe Asaph really would bring the child's mother here someday or send Lilly home, but it seemed to Illyana much more likely that Lilly would become one of those who grew to adolescence or adulthood here. Where would that innocence be then?

At least Lilly wasn't scared any more, even though she probably should be. Illyana didn't have Piotr's artistic talent and the crude methods didn't help, but Lilly had enjoyed it anyway. Illyana dragged the stick in the snow again to make little trees to represent the park they were in. She gestured between the park and the Tower. "Lilly go?"

Lilly's forehead creased slightly as she stared at the drawing of the trees, to the Tower, and back again. Immediately her free hand went to her mouth, two fingers sliding past her lips so she could suck on the tips of them. Rocking forward once again onto the balls of her feet, she slowly plopped her fingers from her mouth and pointed at the trees.

"Lilly home," she said softly, a slight whine in her tone. To her, the area surrounding them looked very similar to the woods she'd grown up in. She was much more comfortable there than in a big building with people she didn't know.

Part of her wanted to cringe at how unsanitary that was, but it was probably normal for children that age, right? As long as Lilly didn't try to hold her hand with the same fingers... yuck.

From the words, Illyana assumed that Lilly wanted to go home. Obviously these woods weren't her home. It'd be hard enough for a little girl to live undetected in a park without it being in a place this unusual... then again, this place was unusual enough that maybe Lilly could manage it. She wasn't going to drag the child off to the Tower, but she could at least make an effort to alert them to the child's whereabouts. Hopefully those Avengers wouldn't have knowingly let a young girl go off on her own.

Illyana held the stick out to Lilly. She wasn't accustomed to using the PDA yet and didn't want to try it one-handed. Besides, it might amuse the girl for a little while.

With wide, unblinking eyes, Lilly stared at the stick for a long moment. Her gaze slowly slid up to Illyana, then back to the stick, as she inched forward and slowly extended her hand toward the stick. Much like an animal, she was obviously on edge and fully prepared to scurry back out of reach at the first sign of danger. When there was no immediate move to grab her, though, she finally wrapped her fingers around the stick and very, very slowly stood up fully.

Curiosity shone brightly in her eyes, was etched all over her face, really, as she looked back to Illyana and quizzically tilted her head to the side as though asking 'now what?'.

Honestly, Illyana expected Lilly to snatch the stick out of her hand and dart away with it, so it surprised her when Lilly took the slow approach instead. She loosened her grip to let Lilly take the stick. Eyes on Lilly, she gestured towards the snow and mimed drawing with the stick. "Lilly do."

She was careful to be slow taking out her PDA so that Lilly could see that it wasn't anything to be afraid of, then she started scrolling through the network for any recent activity from any of the Avengers.

[OOC: I'm assuming this post coincides with Lilly's disappearance despite the posting date? Surely not gone days without it being noticed :) ]

At the instructions, Lilly smiled and immediately dropped back to her haunches. Letting her PDA drop into the snow beside her, she slid her fingers back into her mouth and idly sucked on them while dragging the stick she now held through the snow. For a few moments, she stared intently at her makeshift canvass while scrawling out three stick figures each varying in size. They were on all fours and in the middle of the trees Illyana had drawn a moment earlier.

Of course, no one had any way of knowing that Lilly was drawing the same three stick figures she had drawn, alongside her sister, for her entire life. They represented the two of them, and Mama of course, and just the familiar sight was enough to make her giggle softly. Peering up at Illyana, she smiled again. "Lilly," she said, tapping the stick beside the smallest of the figures. "Victoria," she tacked on as she pointed out the middle one. "Mama," she added in a matter-of-fact tone as she motioned toward the largest. Then she tapped the trees. "Home."

Then her attention dropped immediately back to her drawing, although she did glance up with a curious expression every few seconds as Illyana used the PDA, wondering who the woman was contacting but not really caring enough to try to ask.

[ooc: Oh yes, definitely! Ashe was just away for the weekend and unable to post it at the appropriate time but it definitely takes place not too long after Lilly left the Tower. XD]

Illyana peered at the "drawings". A Western, earthling children might use crayons to draw a picture of home, complete with a house and stick figure family. They would probably sit at a table to do it, or maybe lie down on the floor. In Colligo, there were no guarantees that Lilly was even from an earthly plane. Lilly hadn't included anything like a cabin in the woods... if home was the woods, that would certainly account for Lilly's animalistic behavior and limited spoken language.

She pointed to the middle figure and asked, "Victoria sister?" No "papa" in the picture, Illyana noticed.

After sending a brief message, she resumed watching Lilly make pictures.

Lilly nodded slightly, a faint, slightly sorrowful smile on her face as she peered down at the drawing of Victoria. "Victoria stay," she said softly. Sniffling softly, a tear sliding down her cheek, she seemed to shake the negative memories off a moment later and busied herself doing another drawing. This one was of a cliff, where she carefully drew the largest stick figure as well as the smallest one, standing near the edge. In the distance, she drew the middle sized figure.

Peering up at Illyana, she motioned toward them. "Mama. Lilly. Go. Victoria stay," she tried her best to explain. Then she glanced at Illyana's PDA, back to Illyana, and tilted her head slightly to the size once again in a quizzical manner.

The drawings helped; with a more complex subject, it was more difficult to understand what Lilly was communicating. If she understood right, Lilly's family got split up-- what a cliff had to do with it, Illyana couldn't quite tell. Asaph did bring the dead here. Perhaps there had been an accident with a cliff?

She gave Lilly a brief look at her PDA. "Lilly safe. Illyana tell Clint." She hoped that was simplified enough.

The drawings were still puzzling her, so she pointed to the cliff and gave Lilly a questioning look of her own.
