WHO: Lucifer & Sam Winchester
WHAT: Lucifer misses Sam. He does something that he knows is probably a truly horrible idea. But he really wanted to say hi.
WHEN: January 26th; Afternoon
WHERE: Sam's Apartment
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

So, he hadn't went out of town for the weekend. Instead, Lucifer was pacing his apartment, trying to think of something to do. As it was, he didn't really feel much like going out. The appeal of just blindly wandering the city wasn't really making its mark like it normally did, and while he supposed he could have gone and pestered Claire to see if Meri could come out and play, she and Dean were having more than enough issues of their own without him sticking his nose in and being an irritant. He could have gone and bugged Gabriel, but considering his brother's reaction to everything that had happened the last few days, Lucifer figured it was better to just give him his space and allow him to try and cool his head. Gabriel wasn't someone who got angry often, and when it happened, it was better to try not and set him off. Otherwise, you might end up in the middle of a massacre or a smoldering crater.

As it was, Lucifer just really wanted to talk to someone, but his options at the moment were severely limited. Especially when it came to who he actually wanted to talk to. It was a horrible idea. Sam was still just getting used to the idea that he wasn't a hallucination. To just randomly appear in his apartment would probably send the kid into a coronary. But Lucifer had to prove he was harmless somehow and keeping his distance, well, that had never really worked as a strategy for him. He was more the smother someone with annoying affection until they relented and loved you back type. And that had to work with Sam. He was willing to put money on it.

Stopping in the middle of his apartment, Lucifer turned, glancing left and right, before taking a slow, deep breath. If he was going to do this, he might as well do it now. That way, if Sam decided to kill him, he could -- hopefully -- come back before Gabriel laid the place to waste.

Shifting without a single bit of effort, Lucifer appeared in Sam's apartment in the exact spot he'd been standing in his own. "Knock, knock. I hope you don't mind, but I let myself in!"

Great. Story time. Because that was exactly what Sam wanted to do. Sit in his apartment, drink a beer, and listen to Lucifer wax poetic about his time in Heaven. Sounded... about like his life, really, now that he thought about it. He really hadn't been kidding when he'd told Dean their lives were weird. They really, really were.

Of course, weird or not, it was his life and, truth be told, he wouldn't really trade it. Even if there were times, like right now, that he sort of wished he could.

Sighing softly as Lucifer spoke, Sam eyed him closely. When the Archangel finally stopped, he replied simply with, "Yeah, no. Gabriel already tried selling me on the things we have in common. It didn't work then and it isn't going to work now. And I don't care what you were like before you became what you are. You are not like that now."

He wanted to stop speaking, with that. He really wanted nothing more than to clamp his mouth shut and not say anything else. However, much like with before, the second another thought flickered through his mind, it was passing his lips whether he liked it or not.

"And it wasn't Dean, that helped me take back control, that day," he admitted grudgingly, as much as he hated to do so. He tried his best not to say another word but, with a brief pause, the words still came. "I wish I could say it was, but it wasn't."

"No. I'm guessing it probably wouldn't have," Lucifer said with a hint of a smile. Whatever the situation, he knew his brother, and Lucifer would have bet anything that Gabriel hadn't delved beyond what was important in the immediate moment, beyond what he'd thought could get him the results that he needed, but as Lucifer looked at Sam, he was seeing more than their rebellious side or their birth order. He was seeing strength, cleverness, devotion, determination, loyalty, the things that he'd once embodied only to throw them away. "But the difference right now, Sammy, is that I don't need you as an overcoat anymore. I'm just looking for a little understand, maybe a bit of patience and tolerance on your behalf."

Blinking a bit in the face of the confession, though, all thought of himself was forgotten (all right, not forgotten... shelved for the moment), and instead, he turned to the statement that Sam had made.

"It wasn't?" Lucifer asked, obviously interested. "I could have sworn... But I suppose, I have been wrong about these things before. You Winchesters, so darn unpredictable."

Sam had hoped, however faintly, that Lucifer wouldn't ask. Hell, he had hoped he could refrain from even saying it in the first place. But, as was typical, luck was definitely not on his side. Not that he was too surprised Lucifer asked. Anyone probably would have, so he couldn't really be angry because of it. It did annoy him, though, that he felt almost a compulsion to answer even if he wanted nothing more than to change the subject to pretty much anything else.

"No," he finally admitted grudgingly, his brow furrowing a bit at the memory. It hadn't exactly been a pleasant experience for him. Not that he needed to tell Lucifer that. With a soft sigh, Sam gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. "It was the car."

Realizing how utterly ridiculous that sounded, he was quick to elaborate, "I mean, it was the memories associated with the car. Riding around in that backseat with Dean while dad dragged us all over the country. Carving our names into the upholstery, melting army men into the door handles. It was..." He considered for a moment how to really explain it then settled with, "the emotions that went with it all. I mean, yeah, Dean was a big part of it, but it wasn't Dean that brought me back. Just the memories reminding me I was human."

A brief pause and Sam let out a loud breath of air, asking in frustration, "And why am I saying all of this?!"

"Maybe because I have a trusting face?" Lucifer suggested with a grin and a bat of his eyelashes just to make a point before shrugging a bit. He had absolutely no idea why Sam was telling him all of this, much less so freely and openly, but he wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Just take what he could get out of it and be satisfied. "It's not just you lot that have things like that," Lucifer said, suddenly feeling a little defensive, as if humans were the only ones capable of pure emotions, of emotions so overwhelming that they would enable them to a feat like Sam had performed. "I remember my brothers in the same way, not with tangible ties most of the time, but as fondly," He said, trailing off with a frown. Why did this suddenly feel like it was a competition? Angel vs. Human. The bout to settle who had it better.

"Maybe if my memories had been a little bit fresher," Lucifer said with a shrug, trailing off for a moment before tacking on. "Who knows. Just because you're human doesn't make you anything special in the caring about those close to you department."
