WHO: Dean and Meri Winchester
WHAT: A bit of father-daughter bonding.
WHEN: Afternoon
WHERE: Winchester Family Auto Repair
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Although Meri had already been given prior warning about some alternate version of herself showing up in the past in Colligo long before she, herself, had wound up in the very same past as well, there still were a few things about that concept that were surreal, to put it mildly. Like the fact that, despite how much her parents tried, they couldn't help but look at her a bit... off, like they were expecting her to pull a gun and start shooting things at random for no particular reason, at any given point in time. And although Meri could justify that away easily enough by telling herself that, clearly, they were just uncertain what to expect from their ten-year-old-turned-grown-up-overnight, there were other things that weren't so easy to write off.

The biggest example she could think of, of course, was the Impala.

In her time, Meri had long since tracked down the location of her alternate reality!dad's version of the car, fixed it up so it was drivable, and taken to using it as her personal vehicle. Technically speaking she was still first in line to receive the actual Impala the day her dad died, but in the interim - because no matter how old he got, Dean refused to give his Baby up - Meri was content driving the same, yet not, car. However, because it had taken her a while to realize the car was there, find it, and then make it road worthy again, Meri had fully expected to simply be walking places while stuck in the past. Yet within a few days of arriving in the past, she had come across the car not where she'd originally found it in her own time, but tucked neatly away in a garage on the outskirts of the city, complete with a note from some other version of herself explaining, to her, that the car was hers to keep, detailed exactly what work had been done on it thus far, and she needed to finish working on it if she wanted to be able to drive it again.

So yes. Now she was dealing with a car that wouldn't quite run, that she technically shouldn't find for quite a few years now, and that she also couldn't just walk away from and still call herself a Winchester. Did she know it was some, as the Doctor would put it, timey-wimey stuff that she'd stumbled upon? Yes. Of course. Did she particularly care, however? No. Not so much. In fact, rather than thinking about it too much, Meri instead immediately called a tow truck to have the car picked up and delivered to the one place in the city where she knew the old girl would be well cared for.

Of course, it wasn't until she was pulling up at Winchester Family Auto Repair while riding shotgun in a towtruck alongside a guy roughly the size of a sycamore who went by Tiny that she realized maybe, just maybe, she should have phoned ahead. Knowing it was too late, she simply shrugged to herself and hopped from the towtruck with her trademark smirk on her face. Meeting her dad's gaze from a few feet away, her smirk slowly faded into a mock innocent expression and she said the only thing she could think to say, given the situation.

"It followed me home, daddy. Can I keep it? Please?"

Dean had come to expect a lot of things when it came to his daughter. Or maybe it was more appropriate to say that he'd learned never to expect anything when it came to his daughter. He honestly wasn't sure which was more appropriate. Because she was constantly surprising him, in good ways and bad, and he never knew what she was going to do next. After her first foray into adulthood, killing the devil and generally being kind of unhinged (not that he could blame her, and honestly he was kind of flattered that his death had been enough to push her over the edge...as awful a parent as that made him), he’d been understandably wary about her second trip to grown-up land.

Apparently, though, this time she seemed content to show up at the garage in a tow truck with a big guy and a second Impala. He fixed the guy, Tiny if he was remembering right, with a glare, not liking how close he was to his little girl. Of course, being in the same city was too close as far as he was concerned. At least, when it came to Meri. No matter how old she got, he was always going to want to protect her, and this was no exception. He knew she could handle herself, but he was still her dad and he would still pull a gun on anyone who tried to mess with her. Or on any boys who got ideas. Which, as far as Dean was concerned, was any boys at all. When it came to his daughter, they were all guilty until proven innocent, and even then, they were still guilty. Because they were guys and that was his daughter.

He turned his attention to Meri, crossing his arms and fixing her with an impassive stare. He was quiet for a long moment, just staring her down, before he shook his head with a laugh. Well, this was better than murdering people.

"You’re going to have to feed her and walk her," he said dryly. "And no bringing her in the house."

Meri snorted softly, that trademark smirk of hers returning as she sent a half-wave in Tiny’s direction before making her way over to her father. "But dad," she whined, without missing a beat, "if I don’t let her come inside, she’s bound to find another family who loves her more and does let her do that." By this time, Meri was standing close enough to her dad that the low rumble of the tow truck was nothing but mere background noise and she paused, listening to the sound for a few seconds before tacking on a grinning, "And wow, a day where I’m whining about getting my way without mom around to remind you that I don’t actually deserve everything ever just because you said so? Must be a Wednesday."

She tipped her head toward the Impala - who Tiny was busy unloading from the back of his tow truck - then arched an eyebrow at her father. "So. I already know you have the tools, parts, and ability to fix her up. I guess the only question really remaining is, any chance you’re going to let me help or should I go freak the guy at the shooting range out for a few hours by proving I know more about his job than he does, instead?"

Dean rolled his eyes. In some ways, Meri was exactly the same as she had been at ten. Or still was at ten. Because, damn it, Asaph was going to turn his daughter back to the age she was meant to be. He couldn't handle all of this jumping around. If he had to go punch the guy out, he would. He was pretty sure Emmy would back him on that one. "Don't you 'but dad' me," he said, keeping things going. "No cars in the house. Chomper will get jealous and mess her up and then you'll shoot the raptor and your brother will shoot you, and that's too much shooting for the family room. Do you hear me?" He could only imagine what Claire would say if she heard all of this, but he liked to think that his wife was used to his and his daughter's particular brand of insanity. And speaking of his wife.

"As for your mom, I think she might be out with her other husband. Can't be sure. She'll be by later." From anyone else, the statement would have probably had some trace of bitterness, but Dean was honestly cool with the idea of his wife one day marrying Captain America. In fact, he was pretty sure there was something in the constitution that made sex with the guy a mandatory patriotic action or something. The point was, it didn't bother him. He was honestly just glad that she had moved on, rather than mourning him forever. He loved Claire more than anything in the world, and the idea of his wife giving up on happiness because he'd kicked the bucket wasn't one he wanted to think about.

Dean considered Meri's question for a moment, before giving her a look and an amused snort. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said at last. "You brought her home, you're fixing her. I'm watching, drinking a beer, and talking shit while you do. Isn't that how this kind of thing goes?"

As soon as she'd finished speaking, Meri began an immediate mental countdown for her dad's inevitable response that no, he wouldn't be the one doing all of the work on the Impala, thankyouverymuch. As soon as he'd said it, as she had known he would, she grinned and gave a slight shrug. "Suit yourself," she replied before turning to Tiny, who had finally finished placing the car on the ground. He gave her a grin and she responded in kind, giving him a fist bump without missing a beat.

"Thanks, man. I owe you one," she said simply. Tiny, a man of very few words, simply gave a grunt in response, tossed a look toward Dean, then climbed back into his truck. As soon as he was pulling away, Meri looked back to her father. "Okay," she stated, arching a brow as she met his gaze and pretended no, she hadn't somehow formed a bond with some gruff, huge-sized local roughneck in a fifteen minute towtruck ride, "fine. I'll do it myself. It's not like I can't totally screw up a completely classic car by accidentally putting the seals on backward and making the entire engine explode in on itself or anything. Nope. Never did that before, no sir. I'll just take my chances while you get your drink on. Works for me."

With that being said, and a cheeky grin to accompany it, she made her way past Dean, calling over her shoulder, "And stop looking at Tiny like he's actually a threat. He has boy parts. Definitely not my thing." Her voice dropped to a mutter as she added on, mostly to herself, "Now. It's 2012. Where did you keep the keys to your toolbox because I am not using the crappy ones on my car..."

Dean knew he'd probably eventually end up helping his daughter out with the car. There was no question of that. If nothing else, he'd get bored sitting around watching her do all the work. There was no question that she could do it, because she was his daughter, so it wasn't a matter of thinking she'd eventually make a mistake. "Thanks, I will," he said, going over to the fridge and pulling out a beer, pausing just long enough to fix Tiny with a look as the man fistbumped his daughter. The guy was lucky it was a beer in his hand and not a gun, because he couldn't promise he wouldn't shoot the guy for getting so chummy with his little girl.

He continued glaring until Tiny left before turning his attention back to his daughter. "Don't even pretend you'd ever fuck up Baby," he said, giving her an entirely different sort of Look. Because she was his kid and she knew what the fuck she was doing. "Your car. You do the work. I drink the beer. What's hard about this to understand? You're a Winchester. You know what the fuck you're doing." He sat down on one of the workbenches, watching her with a grin and fishing the keys to the toolbox out of his pocket, knowing she was going to ask for them sooner or later. Not that he blamed her. The Impala deserved nothing but the best in terms of tools.

He almost dropped them though, at the next words out of her mouth. Huh. Meri was a lesbian. He paused. Meri was a lesbian. He had to resist the urge to pump his fist in the air from sheer relief. "Oh thank Emmy," he breathed. "I like that guy. I was gonna hate to have to kill him. But...good for you. Excellent life choice. Not...that it's a choice or anything. I know that. But good. Men are assholes. You should stay away from them." He shot her a grin and tossed her the keys, still stuck in the happy mental place of a father who would never have to worry about his daughter ending up with a guy like him. "Get to work."

Okay, her dad had a point. She'd sooner chop off her own arm than ever do anything to risk putting the Impala in danger. And she definitely knew better than to make a rookie mistake like putting seals on backward, too. Sure, little!her made a few mistakes over the years when learning her dad's craft, but it wasn't like he had ever let her mess up so badly that something that extreme happened. And at the age she was now, she could pretty much rebuild her entire car with a blindfold on, in record time, if she really wanted to. Getting the old girl up and running again after sitting for a while was going to be a breeze... if the breeze was very long, involved, and came with a lot of grease and even more swearing under her breath during the more frustrating parts.

Catching the keys when he tossed them her way, Meri snorted at the happy expression on his face at the idea that she was a lesbian. Even though he was younger than the version of her father from her own time, his expression was exactly the same as it'd been when she'd come out of the closet years before. That was comforting, somehow, in a way she couldn't really explain.

"You leave Tiny alone," she admonished him first and foremost as she made her way to the toolbox, raising her voice enough to be heard. "He's a decent guy with a hot sister." There was a bit of rattling about as she gathered what she'd need to get started working, then she turned back to face him with a smirk. "Besides," she pointed out, aiming the wrench at him in lieu of pointing with her now-filled hands, "he's going to come in really handy down the road. Particularly during what Jack and I call Gabi Learns How To Hotwire Cars 2028." She paused and smirked. "Not to be confused with Gabi Learns How To Drive Without An Adult 2024 or Gabi Discovers Racecars 2029."

And that was for his refusal to assist her with the car, she decided as she made her way back to the Impala and set the tools down near the hood.

Dean had a lot of faith in Meri. For one thing, she was his daughter, which made her a Winchester, which made her awesome. For another, he knew no kid of his would ever even attempt to work on the Impala without being absolutely sure they knew what they were doing. The fact that the Impala was already half-repaired said her other self had done the earlier work, and he figured if one thing was going to be a constant across realities, it was going to be that Meri knew what she was doing when it came to cars. "So," he said casually, taking a pull of the beer. "Can I take this to mean you're going into the family business one day?" He paused a moment, realizing how that sounded. "Not the family business, obviously, but...am I finally going to have another Winchester fixing cars around here?" He hoped the answer was yes.

He really was glad Meri was a lesbian. Some people might have thought that was weird, but he was. He would have been happy no matter what, but it was definitely one less thing to worry about as she got older. Now he just had to worry about Gabi. And, listening to Meri talk, it sounded as though he had to worry a lot about Gabi. Jeez...and he'd thought Meri was the problem kid.

"Fine, fine," he said, "I won't non-cockblock you. Fair? Just...you know...be careful and no details and...be careful, or whatever?" Just because he was cool with his daughter being a lesbian didn't mean he was ready to think about her having sex with anyone. She was only ten as far as he was concerned, she'd only been born two years ago. And this, ladies and gentlemen, was his life. He tried not to think about it too hard. He just shook his head when he thought about all the trouble Gabi would one day get into, and took another pull of his beer. "So...basically, we thought we had it bad with you," he teased dryly, "but we're in for so much worse? Good to know. Maybe we can put her on Craigslist before she gets to be too much trouble. Think your mom would go for that?"

He paused. "Hey," he said. "Speaking of your mom...aging or not? I'm trying to figure out who goes with that."

Meri snorted in amusement as she popped open the hood of the Impala. "Uh, dad," she said, casting a glance at him over her shoulder, "You have met me, right? Of course I'm going to be working here." Or, you know, helping run it. But she wasn't going to say that just yet. Instead she just shook her head and turned her attention to the motor of the car she'd wanted since she was big enough to know what a car was.

"As for Gabi..." she said almost absently as she picked up the wrench and immediately began removing various bolts in order to more easily get to the biggest problem she could see with the engine so far, "she's a level of crazy even I can't touch. Not that she isn't awesome, she is. She just... honestly doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks of her. She does what she wants, and deals with the consequences later." Smiling at the thought of her little sister, Meri chuckled softly as she glanced over at her dad. "And I think this is where I get to say "I told you so" out of respect of the antics of my much younger self when she first showed up. Because if you'd just let her stay in the TARDIS like I tried to do..." She trailed off, obviously joking. She adored her kid sister and would never give her up. They were actually pretty close, now. Especially when Gabi got in hot water. Which was pretty much every day of the week, it seemed. But as far as Meri was concerned, that just made her a Winchester.

Looking back to the mess under the hood, she sighed as she put down the wrench and picked up the automatic drill. Raising her voice to be heard over the whine of the drill as she turned it on, she confirmed, "And mom definitely doesn't age, where Jack and I are from. I don't think it's something she's even considered giving up, really. Although she does sometimes gets these... looks, you know? Like she realizes we're all getting older and she's not, and she isn't sure how to really deal with it." Meri paused, frowning lightly, before she shrugged. "Then she bakes a couple of pies and insists on family movie night, and that's usually that."

Finally getting the pieces loose she needed, Meri set the drill down and took a second to simply study the engine. Her eyes travelled along various ways, taking in every detail and figuring out purely based on knowledge and experience just what was wrong and the best way to tackle fixing it. After a few seconds, she had found the best way to start, so she spoke again while getting busy doing what she needed to do.

"And, for the record, all three of us kids managed to avoid getting her ability, too. Jack's is all cerebral because Emmy forbid he have anything cool, and mine..." Meri chuckled. "Well, my ability would come in really handy if I went into the other family business," she admitted, "But mostly I just used it a lot during my teens to try and avoid getting busted when sneaking out."

Dean shrugged. He'd figured that, out of any of his kids, Meri would end up working with him. Hell, by her age she was probably running the place. Still, it was good to have confirmation, even if it was only for one of many possible futures. He was pretty sure that was how it worked. "Didn't want to assume," he said, giving her a small smile as her attention focused back on the car. "But I'm glad. What about Jack and Gabi. What do they do?"

He frowned slightly at the description of Gabi, but the expression faded quickly into a fond sort of smile. No matter how insane his children eventually ended up being, and they definitely pushed the limits on what most parents could tolerate even now, they were his kids and he loved them. Besides, he'd survived hell. He could survive Gabi. He was pretty sure anyway. At Meri's comment about how they should have let her leave Gabi in the TARDIS, he laughed outright and shook his head. "We're not putting your sister in the TARDIS," he said, his tone amused. "Or in the recycling bin. Or on eBay. And we're not mailing her anywhere or giving her to someone who wants kids or...didn't you try to build a rocket ship to send her into space once?" He had a hard time keeping track of all the ways Meri had tried to get rid of the baby. "But I will definitely keep this conversation in mind when I'm cursing my life later on and remember that you did tell me so."

Dean wasn't sure which answer he would have preferred. Yes, he wanted the chance to grow old with Claire, but he also didn't want to sentence her to an eventual death just to be with him. Ultimately, no matter what, she was his wife and he would love her. Nodding his head at Meri's response, he reminded himself that knowing that didn't make it true for his Claire. Just knowing there was a way to stop her ability, courtesy of her other future self, might cause her to make that choice. There was no way of knowing. "That's your mom," he said fondly. "Of course...now that she knows..." He trailed off. "Either way, she's hot. So that's what's important."

"So, is Jack a telepath or just super smart or like Molly...or what?" He was curious, wanting to be at least a little prepared for the day when his children eventually manifested their abilities. "And thank you, by the way, for telling me how you're going to be sneaking out. Very helpful of you. Now, how does it work? I'm guessing from how you're going on, it's more of a show than a tell sort of thing? Put the tools down for a sec and let me see what we're working with here." He was afraid to ask about Gabi, given his youngest daughter was somewhat insane apparently, but he was definitely curious when it came to Meri. Especially if it was something she was going to be using to get into trouble one day.
