WHO: Ruby and Spike
WHAT: Ruby is still upset over Sam leaving. Spike has experience in significant others being sent home.
WHERE: The Serpent's Den.
WHEN: Closing time.
WARNINGS/RATINGS: PG, for language.

Ruby couldn't have been more happier when last call came around at the Serpent's Den that night. While she didn't want to go to work, she went in anyway. Mostly because it kept her mind off of Sam. She'd been staying at Claire and Dean's with CJ, and Emma was watching CJ while Ruby worked. She hated feeling like she was imposing on them, but she didn't want to go back to her apartment. Not yet. It reminded her too much of Sam and Caden, and she didn't know if she was ever going to be ready to go back there.

For the most part, Ruby tried to be professional, though she was a little on edge. She'd snapped at some of the more difficult customers, and she really had to fight the urge to punch a couple of them in the face. Luckily, Spike was working with her, and was pretty good in taking care of any bar patrons who really gave Ruby a hard time.

When everyone had left, Ruby went about cleaning glasses, and decided to grab herself a beer. "You want one?" She asked Spike, turning to him.

There was a time when having to pick up the slack for someone else would have pissed Spike off, but now, he didn't exactly mind it when it came to certain people and Ruby was one of those people. Sure, they didn't hang out outside of work or really talk that often, but she was tough and didn't take crap from anyone and Spike liked that about her. Popping the top off the bottle, Spike shook his head before taking a swig, "It's not a big deal. I was in your shoes before. I know what you're going through." Spike knew all too well what Ruby was going through, having had Buffy get sent back not once, but twice, so he was very familiar with how she was feeling.

"It fucking sucks, doesn't it?" Ruby said, taking a swig. "I don't know why I bothered, if Sam was just going to get sent back home to where I'm just the traitorous bitch who stabbed him in the back."

"Probably the worst feeling in the whole bloody world," Spike agreed as he took another swig from the bottle and turned to lean against it, giving Ruby his full attention, "I go back home and Buffy still thinks I'm dust and chances are I'm probably seconds away from being butchered by a bloody demon horde." Spike was naive enough to believe that they had survived for long once Los Angeles had been sucked into a Hell Dimension, which was why he preferred Colligo; whether Buffy was there or not. Of course Buffy being there just made it all the more better, "Who knows, maybe he'd be able to get over it." After all, Buffy had forgiven him for trying to force himself on her.

"It really fucking sucks. I've never really felt this sad and just plain angry in a long time. It almost makes me wish that I'd never gotten with him in the first place, if this as going to happen. But then I'd have to give up my children, and I wouldn't do that for anything. Even though Caden's gone, too." She sighed, taking another swig of her beer. "I don't know. I don't see him forgiving me tricking him into jumpstarting the Appocalypse easily. At least, back home." Here, he'd forgiven her long ago.

Spike was fairly certain that the saddest he'd been was when Buffy had died, because at that time it had seemed so final and truthfully, had he been in on the plan to bring her back, he wouldn't have. As much as he loved Buffy, he knew that magic had consequences even when it was for the best of intentions and of course he'd been right. However, after Buffy was brought back, he wouldn't have undone the spell for anything. When Buffy had been sent back the last time, had been the second most miserable he'd been and coupled with the fact that he had become human during that time and he was able to get very, very drunk, it hadn't been the best combination. Just ask Constantine. "At least you've still got the baby. Last time Buffy and the Niblet were sent back I was completely and utterly alone. Spent quite a few of those first few days in a drunken stupor."

"Yeah. I think CJ's the only thing that's keeping me from completely going off the wall and stabbing someone," Ruby said, sighing and looking at the ground. "Not that it didn't help me from trashing the kitchen completely. I still can't go back there, to that apartment. I don't know if I can."

"Don't think I went back to my place for about a week after Buffy was sent back the last time. Don't even remember where I spent those nights." All he really remembered about that time was drinking with John and drunkenly snogging him then some wandering and he was fairly certain that he had spent a night in the storeroom at the bar and it was possible that he might have spent a night at The Sanctuary, but he had been so drunk during that time that he only got flashes of memory. He was honestly surprised that he hadn't died as a result of all that drinking, considering he had been human for most of that time. "Thought about moving into a different apartment?" He asked, taking a swig of his beer as he watched Ruby.

"I've been thinking about it," Ruby said, finishing off her beer. "Kate offered me and CJ a room at the Sanctuary. I might take her up on it. Kate and I close, and I've always got on well with Ashley. And it's not like I'd be overcrowding anyone, like I kind of am at Dean and Claire's right now. They're just too nice to say it."

"Truth be told, even with Buffy back, I've thought about moving to another apartment. Fresh start and all that." Spike didn't know how Buffy actually felt about living in the same apartment where her previous self had lived, but he thought she might appreciate a brand new apartment. "They'll have a full house over there at the Sanctuary then, won't they?" Spike smirked. He knew that they had more than enough room over at The Sanctuary, but he also knew that quite a lot of people lived there.

"I could see where you'd want to do that," Ruby said. "Nothing like a fresh start, I guess." She paused. "I'm glad Kate made the offer. I know there's quite a few people that call the Sanctuary home, but luckily, it's huge...so I won't really feel like I'm imposing or anything."
