Who: Buffy and Lindsey
What: Dropping in for a visit
When: Early afternoon
Where: Buffy's apartment
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

Aside from being taken to a dimension where there was no escape and no explanation for how it happened, Colligo turned out to be a somewhat quieter place than he was used to. It was like a forced vacation, except he'd never been the vacation kind of guy. A few days off, fine, but now he was ready to return and get back in it. Unfortunately, he hadn't turned up any answers and no one else had said a word. Whatever had brought them here, it was good. In the sense it knew what it was doing.

Paper bag in hand, Lindsey headed into the next building and headed for the apartment Buffy and her roommate occupied. He wasn't even sure if the Slayer was home but it was on his way back and except for Leah, he hadn't really seen the others since their arrival. In the case of a certain few, that might've been a good thing. He hesitated as he passed the apartment next to hers, catching one of the names. He rolled his eyes. Of course they'd put Angel nearby.

Leaning back against the doorframe to wait, he reached back to knock on the door. "Buffy?" he called. "I have cookies."

Martha, whoever she was, hadn't really been around, so Buffy had pretty much had the apartment to herself. Currently, she was training in the main room, couches pushed out of the way as she worked with the scythe on a dummy she'd moved into the room from her own. He room had been well-stocked, which was confusing by useful.

She was in the zone, and almost missed the sound of the knock, but she definitely didn't miss Lindsey's voice. Setting down her weapon, she opened the door and grinned. "You just said the magic word," she said cheerfully, stepping aside but not actually inviting him in, even though it was afternoon. She never invited anyone in, and they all knew that.

By the time the door swung open, there was a cookie sticking out of his mouth and he was just finishing rolling the crinkled paper bag back up. "Powerful magic," he said, although the words were muffled until he finished the mouthful of cookie. "Fresh from the bakery."

He knew the routine well enough and stepped inside, holding the bag up for her when he turned around. His gaze fell on the dummy for a second before he looked back to her. "Still working hard, I see." He knew she would but that didn't exactly stop him from ribbing her about it either.

Buffy just smiled. Lindsey had the uncanny ability to be really adorable even when he was goofy. Willow tended to tease her about not being able to find any guys who weren't vampires or demon hunters, but she couldn't help the slight, completely unworthy of mention, crush she had on Lindsey. She had eyes after all, and Lindsey was pretty. Plus, he understood that sometimes hard decisions had to be made, as well as understanding the pain that Angel could cause her without even trying.

"This is why you're my favorite," she said cheerfully, taking a cookie from the bag and setting the rest of the bag on the table in the kitchen. "I should set up a reward program...slaying for baked goods. I think it could really motivate the girls." She took a bite of the cookie and grinned. "And I'm always working hard. Except...you know...when I'm not."

There was a little boy grin on his face as he dropped down onto her couch, legs stretched out in front of him as he clasped his hands behind his head. "Favorite, huh?" He tilted his head back, frowning slightly as if mulling that over. "Cool."

Ask him a few years back if he ever thought he'd be playing the good side with the Slayer and her gang and he probably would have laughed hysterically. Now, sitting in Buffy's living room, it seemed like the better of the fates he could have been given. An insane pseudo-family and a boss he didn't mind taking orders from. Mostly.

"I bet you could get Andrew on board with that. As long as it isn't funnel cake." He crossed his arms, shaking his head. "Which is when? That once in a while blue moon?" he joked.

"I'm easily swayed by baked goods," Buffy said with a shrug, flopping down on the other end of the couch. "Thank god the vampires haven't figured that out yet, or they might start giving me cookies not to kill them." She took another bite of the cookie and gave a happy sigh. "God, Lindsey. I could kiss you right now." Only probably best she didn't do that, because that would be awkward. Still, a girl could dream. Bad Buffy. No daydreaming about teammates. And she really needed to quit thinking in stream of consciousness.

"I'm sure I could," Buffy agreed, "but that's not really saying much. Andrew is scared of me...mostly because I can kick his ass." She laughed. "Besides, he's doing better with the funnel cake these days. And I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be on board with a plan that involved baked goods." She smiled and shrugged. "I like to be prepared. And I'm not working hard right now. I'm sitting on a couch with you and eating cookies. So, clearly I am capable of not working."

The ex-lawyer snorted in amusement at the mental image that brought up, a vamp handing over a package of cookies so that he could live to suck another night. "Don't worry. Your secret is safe with me." And tucked away in mind for future reference. He might've switched sides but the moral ambiguity was ingrained deep within. He glanced over at her, eyebrow arching. "Well, I'm not going to stop you," he laughed, the corner of his mouth lifting in a smirk.

Petite, blond, and could kick his ass. Maybe it could be a type. "Next time I go getting into trouble, I know the first place I'm heading after."

He shifted, finding a more comfortable position, back against the corner where the back of the couch met the arm rest. "He just hasn't discovered the joys of having his ass kicked in that way." What was a little pain after all? "It's food. Practically a bartering system when your house became a hotel for potentials. I got Vi to take my turn at laundry by promising to tell her where Andrew hid his Hot Pockets."

He lifted a hand, waving it lazily before it draped across his knee again. "One of those blue moons right now," he said. "No, you're capable of not working. The rest of us just mess around more so you come off looking better."

"Good," Buffy said with a laugh, shaking her head with amusement. "It would certainly make slaying more entertaining." She grinned at Lindsey. "I know it is. I trust you with my deep, dark, cookie-related secret." She was teasing, but she really did trust Lindsey. He had proved himself time and again to be a worthy ally and a good friend. Raising an eyebrow she leaned closer. "Don't tempt me," she said.

"Oh, and where is that?" she asked, even though she was already fairly certain of the answer.

She shook her head and laughed. "And we're back to Mistress Whips-and-Chains already, are we?" she teased. "Andrew is just really squeamish. But he's doing a good job. Better than I expected, I gotta say." She nodded. "That's how it is when you have that many young girls around. Food is the one thing that they'll all agree on...especially Slayers. Because slaying? Almost always makes you hungry. Or horny." Oh god, she had not just said that. She was turning into Faith. Bad Buffy!

Buffy smiled. "So that's what it is, huh? And here I thought you all just figured I was a workaholic."

"I think the witty banter and staking method would still be the best," he replied. Lindsey put a hand over his heart. "I'll take it to my future grave. But by virtue of loopholes, after that I might give it to the highest bidder via Ouija board." As she leaned closer, the smirk grew the tiniest bit. "But I'm good at it."

He tilted his head. "Bakery. Just have to find one in Scotland when we get back." If they ever got back. It was looking more like a tall order every day.

"I like some rough play but Mistress Whips-and-Chains and I wouldn't get very far. Whips are a deal breaker." He shifted uncomfortably at the thought of one of those coming into foreplay, wrinkling up his nose. "I didn't expect it out of him either. He really rose to the occasion with the right kind of guidance."

He laughed, almost evil. "That was the system. You get the chores done by hiding food and then telling the right person where to find it." Her evaluation of post-slaying habits prompted him to start laughing. "At least you're honest about it. I'm no Slayer but I know the post-adrenaline rush can have some interesting effects on a person."

Lindsey shrugged. "Some of the time. I remember being one and you do have your moments."

"The witty banter and stalking method is an oldie but goodie," Buffy admitted, amused. She nodded at his loophole comment. "Fair enough," she said. Then she grinned. "You are good at it. It isn't fair, by the way."

"Smart man," she said, nodding. "Although, going there can also prevent the whole you getting into trouble thing in the first place."

Buffy looked at him a moment, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Hey," she said softly, "you alright?" Note to self. Don't mention whips. To be fair, she didn't really see the appeal of them anyway. "Exactly! Andrew is coming into his own. I'm glad for him. I think he needs something to focus on and this is a good thing for him."

"Clever," she said, nodding, "evil, but clever." She grinned and shrugged at his amusement. "No reason not to be honest. It's just a fact of life. The adrenaline rush definitely has effects."

"I have to be a little bit of a workaholic though," she said. "Someone needs to lead the girls, and I guess that someone is me. If I slack, it means more of them could die. And I don't want that."

"That's why it's been around so long. The only downside is when you get one that's dumber than a post. Witty becomes a real problem." Although making comments that went over the head of the dimwitted had its moments. "I think it's fair. Temptation goes hand in hand with evil and I am a recovering former evil." He shrugged, doing his best to look innocent. Unfortunately, his halo had been discarded so many times that the look didn't quite fit.

"I still haven't caught up to Xander." He held up a finger. "Only had one girlfriend try to sacrifice me to her demon goddess." And he hadn't dated since. Then again, assisting with an army of Slayers didn't exactly leave any of them free time either.

Her hand on his shoulder made him shake his head. "I'm fine. I was just...that's the one thing I don't get. The whips." He made a face. "There's nothing sexy about 'em. Now handcuffs..." he trailed off, grinning suggestively. "Once again, as long as you're not about to be sacrificed." Although it had started out well. "Now if we could just get him to phase out on the pop culture lectures. I know more about Star Trek than I ever wanted to."

He nodded. "And most of them don't even care when they catch on." Lindsey leaned back, comfortable. "Didn't say there was. I admire the honesty. There's nothing like the aftereffects of a good adrenaline rush."

He grew a little more serious. "No. You're right. Something like this, you have to work a little harder than everyone else. Just don't make it all the time or you're going to pull a Shining."

"It's always frustrating when they don't understand the wit and sarcasm," Buffy agreed cheerfully. "Then it's like you've put a lot of work into the quips, and all for nothing." And nights like that really did make her feel sad. "I don't know if I'd go with evil," Buffy said, "so much as morally relativistic." It was hard for her to think of Lindsey as evil, because he'd been a good ally and she trusted him. Being evil just didn't mesh with that. Of course, Angel and Spike had once been soulless killers and Anya had been a vengeance demon, and Willow had tried to destroy the world that one time, but that was beside the point.

"Nobody will ever catch up with Xander," Buffy laughed, shaking her head as she thought about Xander's romantic history. "Pretty much every girl he dated ended up being a demon...or Cordelia, which was pretty much the same thing back then. Really though, everyone in our group has bad luck though." And wasn't that an understatement.

"I don't really get it either," Buffy admitted, "whips are for Indiana Jones or medieval torture chambers...not...you know." She laughed. "Handcuffs on the other hand...those can make things interesting." She blushed slightly at Lindsey's grin and nodded her head, focusing on the safe subjects of ritual sacrifice and Andrew. "I generally try to avoid being sacrificed. Maybe we can start threatening to sacrifice him to demon gods if he gives the lectures? It's an idea."

"That's because they're happy as long as you're telling them where the food is," Buffy said with a smile, relaxing. "That's true, unless you're sad and single like...well...the vast majority of us." Then the aftereffects weren't quite so fun.

Buffy gave Lindsey a small, grateful smile, glad that somebody understood. "Don't worry," she said, "I won't work myself too hard. And I have you all to give me a taking to if I do."

"Disappointing. But I do like laughing at idiots." Or sometimes it just turned into a form of venting. "There was that but being the golden boy of a demonic law firm? Saying grey is being kind." He had no illusions that he'd been tricked into what he done and he wasn't in this because he'd decided to seek redemption. It was a matter of belief, survival, and finding a surprising place to belong.

Buffy and her crew had turned out to be more supportive than Angel had. At least he didn't need to die to prove he was serious. Although Giles had threatened, in his own subtle way, to make sure he paid if he betrayed them.

"I can't believe that he dated Cordelia. You couldn't find two more different people." He paused. "But so was Anya." He snorted softly, rubbing his jaw. "Somehow with that extreme blunt streak, she was easier to get along with. It's nice to know where you stand with people." And he'd been put in his place more than once by the ex-vengeance demon. "I miss her." Attachments. Healthy ones. That was still new territory.

"Exactly. Some pain is fine but when the line starts blurring between torture and sex, I think I'll pass." He nearly started laughing as he saw the blush appear, instead opting for smiling smugly. "We'll save that for a last resort. That and there would be more than a few unhappy Slayers if anything happened to him. I'm not dealing with that." He gave her the thumbs up. "I endorse avoiding sacrifice."

"A situation we all know well. Comes with the territory. You'd think the universe had something against sex with the way it keeps interrupting relationships with apocalypses." Or maybe it was just timing. "You know we will. One of the first lessons pounded home when I joined up with you guys. You look out for each other."
