Who: The Eleventh Doctor and Rose Tyler.
What: Chips. And other stuff too, but...chips.
Where: A chip shop.
When: Evening.
Rating: TBD.
Status: In progress.

Though they hardly spent as much time together as they once had, for any number of reasons, the Doctor still cared deeply for Rose Tyler. He had loved her once, and though he was no longer in love with her, she was still important to him. He knew the things that kept them apart, his discomfort with Jack and her occasional discomfort with River amongst other things, shouldn't have been such a barrier, but there was also a part of him that hadn't wanted to get too close. Because he knew he would never be her Doctor. And he could be, at times, a very selfish man. He didn't like competing with his former regeneration, especially knowing he could never really win, and it was frustrating to know that he would never be quite good enough where Rose was concerned. Oh, it wasn't her fault. She'd known the other him far longer. They had shared something here. It made sense. Besides, the Doctor's perception of how Rose viewed him was just that. His perception. He knew he might be reading things wrong, allowing his own insecurities to rule him. It was something, he had been told, that he had a bad habit of doing.

But none of that mattered right now. Rose was, if not quite upset, at least uncomfortable with his other self's arrival. Given his tenth incarnation's anger and inability to listen to reason, he could hardly blame her. So, he had offered to take her to get chips so that she could take her mind off the things that were bothering her. Simple, fun and unlikely to end in any running. Well, no evening was perfect. Still, this would work well enough. He had decided to pick Rose up at her place, choosing to walk rather than take the TARDIS both because there was a chip shop close enough to where she lived and because it seemed a bit rude to kick everyone out of the TARDIS just so he could spend time with her. Yes, he was a bit concerned that his other self might try to steal her in his absence, but he had the utmost confidence in his wife's ability to defend his...other wife.

Knocking on Rose's door, he shifted from one foot to the other awkwardly as he waited, then gave a bright smile as the door opened. "Hello, Rose," he said with a smile and a little wave.

Rose had been rather overwhelmed when the first thing she heard from the Doctor was threats and shouting. She had wanted him back since the day he left but for some reason she was more inclined to spend more time with his future regeneration for some time before she went to see him. She didn't get to see that Doctor as often as she would like and she knew she was as much to blame as him. She felt unsure of her place in his life. She understood things were different between them and she was okay with that. She loved him, yes, but it was a different kind of love. Though that love did include the fact t hat she would drop everything to be by his side and help him through everything.

She needed to see him right now. And she was going to leave her PDA behind and focus entirely on him. She just wished she had done this sooner. Yes they had spent some time together in the past but not like this. Not just them having a laugh like they use to. She hadn't looked forward to anything as much as she was now in quite some time. Looking up when she heard the door, she rather quickly oppened it and there it was. The smile that, no matter the regeneration, had the ability to make her grin in response.

"Hello Doctor," she replied, laughing softly at the wave. Grabbing her keys, money already in her pocket, she stepped out and locked the door. As she turned to look at him again, she couldn't help but reach out to wrap her arms around him. In thanks, as a greeting... Well it meant a lot of things.

Every time he saw Rose, the Doctor felt a swell of emotion in his chest. Rose had been someone he really had loved and, if things had gone differently with her and his last incarnation or with him and River, he knew there was every chance he could have ended up with her here. But he didn't dwell on the past. Honestly, he usually ran full-tilt away from it. It was a bad habit of his, the running. And, while he wasn't running now, he definitely wasn't going to acknowledge that he still very much loved Rose Tyler. He was pretty sure that would make things awkward between them, not to mention getting him quite possibly shot by his wife, and he didn't want to mess up their friendship.

When Rose hugged him, he hugged back immediately, then grabbed hold of her hand as they headed toward the chip shop. It was nice, holding her hand and knowing she was safe with him. "So...chips," he said casually. "Been a while since we just went and got chips. We should do that more often...don't see each other nearly enough. That's definitely something we can work on." He smiled slightly. "How have you been? I mean...I know things are a bit difficult right now, what with other me, but apart from that. How are you?"

She almost didn't want to stop the hug when he pulled away but when he took her hand instead she couldn't complain. Hugging him had always been something she was extremely comfortable doing but holding his hand? That felt even more natural no matter the regeneration. And having his hand in hers managed to make her feel a bit better than she had in some time. And the fact that he had been the one to make that move, to take her hand, meant even more. They may not be walking through history or running away from an enemy but it still felt just as right. And it still made her heart skip a beat.

"Yeah it's been a while." Both seeing him and getting chips with him. She had always worried that she would get in the way of how his life was now and those he spent his time with. He had a new life now really and she wasn't sure where she fit into it. "Oh I'm fine."

She wasn't really. She wanted to be away from here and back home. With her parents, her brother and a life that she wasn't getting here. More fulfilment and less boredom.

Fine. The Doctor hated that word. He was never sure if people actually meant it, or if it was just the simplest way of saying that no, they really weren't fine at all, but it was really better to just pretend they were. When people said they were fine, he always worried that it meant the opposite, and then he ended up dwelling on that instead of focusing on the conversation. Fine was just about the stupidest word a human could use as far as he was concerned.

When Rose used it, the Doctor wrinkled his nose and looked over at her. "Fine?" he asked. "Are you really fine? Or just saying that? It's just...you've been so quiet lately and I've been...concerned. And I just...you'd tell me, wouldn't you? If you weren't fine?" He hoped that she would, but he didn't want to assume. He just wished Rose could open up to him the way she used to. She was still very important to him and he hated to think that she might be upset and there was nothing he could do to fix it.

He was the Doctor. Fixing things was what he did.

He had noticed? For a moment Rose felt guilty thinking like that but part of her couldn't help that little bit of, well, jealousy that crept into her. Though she didn't think she had been that quiet but she supposed, when she looked back on it, she had been a lot more within herself than getting involved.

"Of course I would." Well she may depending on what was wrong. She felt like she didn't know him well enough to know how to talk to him about how she felt if it wasn't happy. Some may view that as weird since he was the Doctor also but she didn't know him. His personality. How he thought about certain things.

"I am just running out of patience waiting for things to happen. I don't mean normal, every day things but...Adventures. Monsters. Running. I only now realise just how dull my life was before we went travelling."
