Who: The Doctor and Open
What: Having given his temper several days to decide, The Doctor visits a lake, sees Jack, and ends up getting in a fight with a very strange thing and....RUNNING!
Where: The Lake, and surrounding grounds, possibly spilling out into the city.
When: Saturday, June 16th, late evening
Rating: Likely PG - now updated to R, for language.
Notes: Random Scenes make me happy!

It had been one of his worst days ever, and since, he'd not run, but walked. He'd walked, and walked, being careful to stay away from any would be passerby, from anyone who might have spoke to him, from anyone who might have talked to him at all. The Doctor knew, understood, what his temper could do. He knew, better than anyone could have imagined, because he'd been there. He'd been the one to think it, to see it unfold in front of him, to make it happen. He'd been the catalyst for the greatest undoing, the greatest legends, across time and space - and he knew better than to risk subjecting anyone else to that.

His message had been heard, of that he was certain, but The Doctor gave no reply as he wandered the streets of this new city with a downcast gaze and tattered suit. He now understood just what was in front of him. Rose was here, Martha was here, even River Song was here. There was, of course, The Master as well, and several other voices he did not recognize. Everyone though, save three, and the voice of a child, were all reminders of how he'd failed and he wasn't entirely convinced the others weren't part of some strange time stream of his either, given how non-nonchalantly they'd responded.

At least now he knew that Molly had been telling the truth, and that meant there were others out there, another Doctor, at the very least - and that was never a good thing. The Doctor had struggled to find his bearings, wandering the city, trying to think. Did he trust The Master, was Wilfred really going to be fine? How could he even have known who he was talking about unless..

The Doctor didn't even finish the thought. There was no need. If it was The Master, somehow making his way back from the other side of the Time Lock, this place wouldn't look like this at all. There would be no park, no lake, no buildings, no city, no people. The Time Lords would have erased it all, and it simply never would have been. There was at least a small comfort in that, as he approached the edge of the lake, dropping down to his haunches to run his fingers through the blades of grass. He sighed, softly, whispering to himself the one question he always seemed to be asking himself.

"What do I do now?"

His dark eyes drifted skyward, as if the stars themselves might have an answer or, at the very least, a TARDIS.

That would have been nice.

Jack took the cuffs out of his coat and said, mostly to himself, "Strong enough for a man, pH-balanced for a weevil..." Not pH-balanced, no, but they were very strong indeed to handle what needed cuffing around Cardiff.

"Luckily for you, this man is the Doctor. If you can tell him what makes up the antidote, he might well be able to whip it up from whatever's on hand." He had to stop with the cuffs to wince at the close quarters screaming. "Sounds like this is something recurring if he goes carrying around an antidote to it. He didn't just get attacked and changed."

As soon as The Doctor heard the word 'antidote' he was already sprinting back along their path, panning the sonic screwdriver around like a mad fool. He didn't even bother telling Jack what he was doing; partially because he didn't think he had to, and partially because, well, Jack was smart enough to figure it out on his own.

"Jack!" He finally shouted. "Start carrying him - need to find this an.ti..dote.." His words broke and slowed down, become quieter as the screwdriver began giving off pulsing emissions in a slow rhythm. The Doctor knew, already, what that meant. The Vial was broken, smashed somewhere. The best he could do now was hope to scrape enough of a sample of it in order to recreate it.

Scouring the ground, The Doctor finally found a small, wet, pool. Without the delay of thinking, he thrust his hand into it, before lifting his palm to his lips and giving his tongue a long, rather unpleasant, taste of the thing.

His face scrunched, rather unpleasantly. "Oh!" He nearly wretched, turning back around to run to Jack. "This is awful. Why would anyone ever make an antidote that tasted so bad?!" He was still rambling by the time he caught up to them. "Eecckch." He exclaimed. "Seriously, that's just vile. I think I'd rather be poisoned."

It was remarkable sometimes, how he could get cheered up by even the tiniest win.

"Not funny!" Jonathan yelled, glaring. He was rather proud of his toxin and it's antidote and didn't need some two bit, no degree holding loser insulting his talents.

He was also getting tired of being naked.

"Can I please get something to wear?" he asked, pouting as cutely as he knew possible. "I'm naked, cold, and while Jack is a rather attractive man I wouldn't mind being naked with in other circumstances, this is a bit humiliating," he muttered, going to cross his arms before remembering he was handcuffed.

It was easy enough to catch on that the Doctor was looking for the existing antidote, maybe to salvage it or recreate it. It was less obvious why the Doctor was licking it. What was it with him and licking things? How much did he really find out doing that?

"They flavor medicines for kids. I guess they figure adults can stomach their medicine. They really should watch Mary Poppins." He smirked at the naked man in his arms and kept carrying him towards the Doctor. "I'm flattered, but sorry! You'd have to take that up with my husband. I guess you could drape a shirt in your lap. What's your name, anyway?"

"They really should. This stuff is awful. Seriously. One of the worst things I have ever tasted - and I've tasted a lot of things. This tastes like.." The Doctor pondered for a moment. "Abzorbaloff sweat and Silurian saliva. I'm surprised it's not toxic. Mind you, if it's the antidote for something that turns you into a twelve foot straw man, that makes sense." The Doctor babbled as the trio moved onward toward the clinic.

"What is it with you humans, always feeling so exposed, like you need to cover up? Again, not complaining, just curious. I mean, it's not like you're a Time Lord, born into the clothes you just happened to be wearing at the time. You're born naked. Love what you do with your clothes though. Fantastic stuff. Brilliant." The Doctor eyed the scuffed and torn shoulders of his suit. "Might have to see about getting another one of these. Makes me miss the TARDIS."

The Doctor paused his speech, at Jack's question and just smiled. He knew he liked that man for a reason, even if it was the same reason he liked most humans.

Jonathan turned his head a bit, eyeing Jack before smirking. "Give me your husband's name, I'm sure he can convince him that two is better then one for a night," he said, teasing before wincing as the pain from the transformation settled into his bones without the antidote.

He was still hallucinating, focusing through it, ignoring the bird trying to rip his eyeballs out.

"Doctor Jonathan Crane," he said, coughing, blood appearing still but no toxin and the blood droplets were lessened. "I work at the clinic you two are about to drag me to, naked, yes Doctor I do care about it and ruin my image and reputation."

"Oh, wouldn't be the first time, but you and me? We just met and I'm a loyal kind of guy. No more flings with people I just met. Now let's see how much the Doctor's jaw drops if he was paying attention..."

He gave the Doctor quite a look at the comparisons made. "I really don't want to know why you know what those things taste like."

Nudity, on the other hand, he had to laugh about. "Hey, not all humans have an exposure problem. And not all the people you work with would be... prejudiced towards serious issues like randomly turning into a giant straw monster."

"Jack Harkness." The Doctor balked. "You? No more flings? Oh I believe that about as much as I believe you could fly the TARDIS." The Doctor clearly did not believe that about the man for a minute, if one was to believe his words. Truthfully, however, he'd always known Jack to be a very loyal man.

The Doctor looked concerned at the coughing. "You have The Doctor bringing you into a clinic. Martha works there, trust me. No one will ask any questions and, if they do? You were mugged by a giant scarecrow and gassed with a hallucinogenic compound, so we had to handcuff you and drag you to the clinic to replicate the antidote. Believe me, not the strangest thing we've done. Jack once rode out the outside of the TARDIS, unshielded, through the vortex, all the way to the end of time." Like always, The Doctor rattled on like everyone around him time traveled, before looking over at Jack.

"You really are mad, you know that?"

"Why couldn't I have landed in a place before you gave up flings? I never get any luck. The girl I want falls in love with a madman, the guy I'm head over heels for doesn't even notice me and now, one of the hottest guys I've met in a new reality I'm stuck in is married. This is ridiculous, I was cursed at birth, seriously."

He pouted at that for a moment of self-misery before frowning at the pair. "The last time anyone saw me after an attack I was fired, so if you can see why I'm a bit nervous? I don't even know either of you, and yet you want me to believe you that it'll all be fine? Hell, you," he said, jerking his cuffed wrists towards the Doctor. "Did nothing but scream at me and then blow out my hearing with our stupid message,"

Okay, so it was his brain damage that caused the beeping to react worse in him then others, but he still fully blamed the Doctor.

Giving a heavy sigh, he leaned against Jack again, exhausted from the strain. "If I shut up and stop whining...promise you wont' just abandon me there," he said softly. "I...I don't handle things well,"

And he already trusted them, despite his complaints.

"Funnily enough, I can fly the TARDIS and you used to let me tinker with her plenty, so that should answer that. Sorry, Jonathan! I can't help my irresistible charm and good looks. It's not your fault."

The Doctor's on-the-spot excuse sounded just fine to Jack, but after what Jonathan said, he could see why the reluctance to get medical care despite the necessity. "The Doctor doesn't..."

He couldn't say the Doctor didn't abandon people. Jack was a very clear example of how the Doctor really did. And he wouldn't have had to go on a mad ride outside of the TARDIS if... But it really wasn't the time to get into the past. "We won't just dump you there. Hey, if nothing else, you've got us very curious to know what's going on with you. We don't even have to bring in any of the clinic staff unless the Doctor somehow can't figure out the antidote himself, and that's extremely unlikely. Can you show us how to get into the labs? Opening locks won't be a problem."

The Doctor's mouth dropped at Jack's statement, and he immediately flew into a string of words, with barely a breath to separate them.

"You what?! - How? - You're all..muscles and guns - how can you fly a TARDIS? It's not like it's something you can mate with - if it was you could probably fly it anywhere you wanted - but..A TARDIS? You?." The Doctor stared at him as the moved with the naked man. "Jack. That's really not very funny at all."

Then there was Jonathan's statement to consider, and the subsequent reply he heard Jack start to make. His brows furrowed at the man for a moment, before he set himself back to the task of figuring out just what it was they were going to do. After all, this man clearly had some problems he needed to work out. There were some things about him that were just wrong which, The Doctor suspected, he had no control over. Leaving him alone would have been simply unsafe and terribly impractical.

"We'll need to get into the labs." He responded, opting for his usual course of simply ignoring the thing he didn't want to hear. Concurring with Jack's statement was just easier. "I'll need access to whatever you've got if I'm going to attempt to replicate this - even try and throw in a dash of a better taste - perhaps by altering the recombinative states of several of the various compounds - same effect, different structure. Simple enough." And then, after he'd finished, he added the one, weighted, statement that told volumes of truth.

"Relax. Like Jack said. He'll look after you."

"Like Jack said. He'll look after you.

Jonathan stared at the doctor at that sentence, easily reading what was not said. He turned away, not looking at either of them. "Put me down," he demanded softly, staring out into the distance.

He wasn't about to put his trust into some one who was going to drop him and run. Especially not with a chemical concoction that could and would counteract any poisoning he created.

The Fear Toxin was his child, his baby, he wasn't going to leave it's cure sitting around in some man's brain to be pulled out the next time Jonathan had a bit of fun.

"I no longer have use of your assistance," he said, though he didn't struggle against Jack's hold or the cuffs he was bound in.

Jack tried not to be stung by the Doctor's words, considering the way the Doctor sometimes teased, but he'd been insulted a fair bit by the... bow-tied Doctor, however they should refer to these different selves. Muscle and guns? Really, like the Doctor had never counted on Jack's brains? "No, it's not funny. Unless your timeline isn't like mine, you've been there to have me fly her, with or without some added help. And you know I did plenty of repairs and upgrades, too. Maybe she wouldn't let me at her insides these days, but she used to."

He looked at Jonathan with raised eyebrows. "Something we said?"

"Oh yes. you. do." The Doctor responded to Jonathan's final words with a rather matter-of-fact firmness. "You're sick. Very sick. Hemorrhaging blood from your lungs in a fashion that is anything but healthy. You've been contaminated with an unknown, hallucinogenic, compound - well, clearly known to you - of sorts that is being exhaled in a gaseous form from your lungs, just five minutes ago you were twelve feet tall and mad of straw, tried to kill us, and seem rather broken up about it now - plus your antidote tastes awful - so I'm exactly the kind of person you need, and you're very, very lucky we're so good at running. You might have killed people.."

The Doctor continued his babbling as they walked, only pausing when and if Jack actually set him down. "And yes, Jack, you have brains, but really.." The Doctor motioned to the man over their shoulder with a raised brow. "Straw man, twelve feet tall, running for our lives, need to craft an antidote - now's not the time to be so sensitive. We both know you're clever." The Doctor teased, while also being genuine. Jack was incredibly clever, nowhere near as clever as The Doctor though himself, but clever nonetheless.

"But I don't get you, I get him, because you're going to dump me there and run off with my antidote so you can fashion an antidote to all of the Fear Toxin and..." He cut himself off, realizing he was about to reveal too much and give himself away as the Scarecrow.

"Besides, it's not like you care, you just want to stop me. I'll heal fine on my own, I always do." Of course, that was until the next time Scarebeast took over to try to eat some 'pretty toy' he found running in front of him.

One day, Jonathan's lungs were just going to give out.

As the Doctor elaborated on exactly why they shouldn't just abandon Jonathan, Jack nodded along in agreement. He did set the man down on his own two feet, though, since it'd been asked of him. Not like it'd be hard to catch the guy if the Doctor insisted on bodily hauling him off, which he wouldn't put past him.

"Hey, maybe I've missed you saying nice things about me. I can be touchy!" Speaking of touchy... he gave Jonathan a sharp look. "Fear Toxin? What're you talking about? Is that what's in your lungs? Because if that is, it's a good thing for the Doctor to reproduce the antidote for it, maybe even make it better. Aaand by the way-- the Doctor cares. Oh, he cares a lot, believe me."

The Doctor froze in his tracks, whipping about on his heels to stare the man in the eyes. For the second time since they'd met, there was a very serious darkness that pooled behind those timeless eyes. He stared for a long moment, unblinking, his nostrils flaring only slightly, before he finally spoke.

"I want you to think, very, very carefully to what I'm about to ask you in a minute, because you said something that makes me think I have cause to be concerned. You used the words 'stop me' - and the only reason someone would have used the words 'stop me' were if they were very, very concerned they were about to be doing something that someone wouldn't like - and in this case that someone is me. You've already seen angry, and you've seen me angry at a man who no one knows that I can't stop. You don't have that luxury and you really don't want me angry at you - trust me - you don't."

The Doctor gave his words a moment to pass to the man, his eyes and pursed lips doing their very best to convey just how serious he was about this situation. If this man was aware of what he'd done, knew the monster that he was, and had some kind of plan for this fear toxin that he was worried The Doctor would stop him from using, then the night was about to be taking a very different turn.

"Now, I want you to listen to me very closely, and think very hard about what you say next - and don't lie to me, not when I'm giving you a chance, not today." The Doctor just stared at him, his lips half curled in anger.

"You said 'all' of the fear toxin. What is it? Where is it? And why are you worried I might stop you?"

Jonathan was going to answer Jack when teh Doctor spoke and he swallowed thickly. He had thought, that Batman was the only one who could cause Jonathan to feel fear anymore.

...he had been so very wrong.

He shifted, trying to hide his body's physical reaction to the emotion, using Jack as a sheild between him and the Doctor. "Fear Toxin is what comes out of my mouth, when I'm the beast...why else do you think I had a screaming panic attack?" he asked, voice a bit squeaky.

"I meant 'stop me' as in to stop the beast, that that was your only concern, not about me as a person," he added, keeping Scarecrow far, far away from the mess.

He would NOT admit to that, even if the Doctor tried taking him apart piece by piece. Not here, not where he had a chance to be himself...unlike Gotham where everything had been stolen from him. And he wasn't lying, he hadn't yet created more toxin...he needed to pick up some bread soon however to do so. Or LSD if he could find a dealer.

"I have been the beast for a few years now...it's a genetic mutation forced upon me, it can't be changed."

Jack was pretty sensitive to certain... reactions that people might have, what with the way humanity had changed by his time. He wouldn't interrupt one of the Doctor's classic stare downs to point that out. It'd either exasperate or fluster him, and besides, Jonathan was using Jack as a modesty screen.

"Uh, I was kinda interested in stopping the lunatic who punched the Doctor out of nowhere who then turned into a beast. Not a great first impression to make on me. Just to add that. And another thing-- is the Fear Toxin the cause of the mutation or a result?"

The Doctor, on the other hand, seemed completely oblivious to the reaction. His eyes refused to move from the mans own as he studied him. His lips drew more narrow, and the screwdriver was, again pulled from his pocket. He knew this man had clearly disliked the noise in the first place and The Doctor thought it would serve as a more than suitable warning.

"Think, very, very hard." The Doctor warned, advancing another step on Jonathan. "Because you said, 'make an antidote for all the fear toxin' - which implies there's a limit - which implies you know what that limit is, otherwise how could you know there's a limit? - then you said something - the most interesting thing of all in fact - and do you know what that was Jonathan Crane?" The Doctor paused, giving his words only seconds to sink in.

"and." The Doctor answered sharply. "Nobody uses the word 'and' unless they've got something more to say - and if you have anything more to say - and I'm being very, very patient here - it is honestly in your best interest to tell me right now - because it doesn't matter when, or where, or why, or how, if that and comes out, and I don't like it - you will wish you'd told me the truth."

The Doctor snapped the screwdriver on, just for a second, at a frequency that wasn't at all painful. Sure, he couldn't have amplified it here - not without cannibalizing the cell phones and PDAs anyway - but Jonathan didn't have to know that.

"You seem very interested in whether or not I care and, if you want me to care, you're going to stop holding things back from me right. Now. Now, of all the nows, all the moments, since the beginning of time, that you could imagine something being the most important thing someone could do...that's where you are.." The Doctor's teeth were practically snapping as his face moved closer to the mans own.

"Now. Tell me. What And?"

Jonathan reacted violently. Not to the Doctor's words, or his temper, but the 'non-painful' screwdriver. He clutched his head, screaming at the pain. Granted, it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but it still sent spikes of pain through his skull, like a migraine.

"and you would stop it!" he screamed, finishing the sentence, curling into a ball of pain and misery.

Jack winced and covered his ears at the scream so close to them. The screwdriver-- no problem whatsoever. It was just a little warning buzz. But that reaction Crane had to it was enormous.

"YES I WOULD! The Doctor shouted back abruptly.

"I would stop it every. single. time. Things like that hurt people, and here's a tip about me. You do not want to hurt people while I am around because I don't like it and you know what happens when someone does something that hurts someone else?" He glowered, his words spilling from his lips in a nearly untempered rage. "I teach them a very, very important lesson. The last people, who thought it was a good idea to make me angry, who hurt innocent people, just so they could get to me..." His voice trailed off. "I locked on in a mirror, in every Mirror, I dropped another into a timeless prison wrapped in unbreakable chains, forged at the heart of a Dwarf Star.. and the third? She was the worst of all. I dropped her into a collapsing galaxy..." His voice trailed off again.

"So the next time you think, even for one minute, that I wouldn't stop you. I want you to remember this moment, when you stood before me, cowering, naked, afraid of what I might do and I want you to remember this: I warned you. I didn't have to warn you and I did. Think about that. Think about the kind of man who gives warnings, the kind of man who makes rules for himself. Think about all the things I could do to you with just the push of a button and then decide if it's worth the risk..because if you do..know this.."

The Doctor extended the screwdriver out, though he did not depress the button. "I will find you."

"Please...stop...yelling.." Jonathan whimpered, covering his ears. His body was torn between reacting to the fear coursing through it sexually or defending himself.

The mental confusion was evident as straw burst through Jonathan's skin, causing him to scream again, only to retract, hips grinding against the ground, eager for stimulation.

"Please, just stop!" He started rocking back and forth, hugging himself, desperate to calm down, to not feel. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please..."

Jonathan was broken, the fear, the stress, the fighting to keep the beast from taking control, the arousal, all of it had broken him.

Large tears spilled down his cheeks as he rocked, sobbing.

Although Jack knew that the Doctor was capable of some pretty heavy, dark stuff, it still raised gooseflesh hearing him describe some of those things. Damn. Then on the other hand, he couldn't help wondering-- why none of that for the Master? Hurting innocent people to get at the Doctor, well, that was a pretty defining trait of that monster, wasn't it? He wasn't going to interrupt the threats to bring that point up, though. It was something to discuss later.

And then he really had other things on his mind. Jack had seen a lot, done a lot, that other people would find somewhat perverted. But a guy with internal bleeding having a mental breakdown and humping the ground while straw popped in and out of his skin?

"... Huh."
