WHO: Sherlock Holmes & Gil Grissom
WHAT: Sherlock needs to learn police procedure in order to get reinstated to the police force. Gil offers to help him with shortcuts.
WHEN: After this
WHERE: Sherlock's flat
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

It had been a lengthy on and off study session that Sherlock had been engaging in to try and learn the department procedure that Nathan wanted him to know before returning to work. It was something that had been stalled and complicated by the fact that Sherlock just didn't want to learn any of this information and thus, his brain was being difficult when it came to recalling it. It was as if the regulations were some type of poison, and his mind was violently trying to expel them before they infected everything else. It was amazing, really, that he hadn't even thought about cheating until Grissom had brought it up despite the fact that he had had every intention of deleting the information once it had served its purpose. But now that the possibility had been brought to his attention, it was pretty much the only path that Sherlock was going to be taking now.

Having returned back to his flat for the evening, just so that Irene and the very mansion itself couldn't offer even more distreactions from the information that he didn't want to learn, he'd spread out the texts on the floor in front of him, trying to organize the information in a system that would work with what he already knew, Sherlock knew that in order to get fully through these things that it wouldn't hurt to have someone here to test him. Without another voice to bounce things off of, he could give in, glance at the text, cheat and tell himself that he would be fine. It was a similar issue to ones that he'd had in University, on tests that he didn't really care for with information that could concern him even less than it did. The only difference here was that even as much as the information didn't concern him the thing which knowing it would lead to did.

He wanted back on the force, and if this what he'd have to do to do it, he'd figure it out. One way or another.

Sitting cross legged on the floor, head propped up on his folded hands as he glanced back and forth over the documents, Sherlock's head turned at the knock at the door. Pushing himself to his feet and crossing the flat, Sherlock lingered in front of the door for a moment before pulling it open. The sight of the forensic scientist was an apple in hand was not really what Sherlock had expected to see on opening the door. The last thing that Sherlock had expected was for the man to show up with a bagged lunch, but considering he'd been on shift until a few minutes before, Sherlock figured that it made sense.

"If I'd known you hadn't eaten yet, I would have ordered a take away," he said before crossing back over to the spot on the floor where he'd been sitting, all of the things that he'd been going over spread out on the ground in front of that spot. "I can move them back to the table if that would make it easier for the both of us to go over them. There just wasn't enough room to really be able to look at them properly over there," He said, turning his gaze back to the older man. "I haven't made it past General Order 1. I keep getting staled out on the Code of Ethics."

Which Sherlock knew was pretty bad considering the Code of Ethics was only about the third thing in the manual.

"I rarely eat when I'm working," Gil responded simply as he followed Sherlock into the apartment. "But if I don't eat by the time I get home, Sara insists. Considering our conflicting schedules right now, I'd rather not worry her." Taking another bite of the apple and chewing thoughtfully, he dropped his gaze to the information spread out across the floor.

"No, no," he said with a slight shake of his head. "The floor is fine. Definitely roomier." Dropping the apple back into his bag, he set his bag down on the table then moved back to where Sherlock was standing. He smiled very slightly at the admission that the other man was getting caught up on the Code of Ethics. It made sense, considering.

"As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve humanity; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional right of all people to liberty, equality and justice," he recited as he took a seat on the floor and cast another faint grin in Sherlock's direction. "You won't be expected to know it verbatim, though," he said mildly. "I just did so on a bet in the academy."

With a slight shrug, he added, "When asked, give a general synopsis. You're expected to hold yourself to a higher standard than those around you, particularly when upholding the law and morals that help bind a functional, ordered society." He paused then added lightly, "Sometimes, less is more. Especially in this instance."

It really was odd how the more that Sherlock was around this man, the more the similarities that Mac had first talked about seemed to be made clearer and clearer. "Nor do I. It makes the cognitive functions sluggish," He said, glancing back over at Grissom as he started to recite the section that he had found to be such a stumbling block. It wasn't so much the words that had been the issue but the sheer content and the fact that somehow, they actually seemed to think that this was manageable. He had known several officers during his career, and even the best of them wouldn't have been able to maintain the level of unsullied reputation that the oath seemed the ask for.

"Is this how all law enforcement is expected to operate?" Sherlock asked, moving to sit back down in front of the manual and pick out the other bits that he'd managed to decide were really the meat and potatoes of what he was expected to know. "If so, these regulations ask far too much of the average individual," He said, glancing up at Gil with a curious yet skeptical gaze. "Even the best officer is susceptible to the same aspects of human frailty as the rest of the population, more so because of their position of authority. And nobody's private life is as spotless as this seems to demand."

Shaking out his head with a sigh, Sherlock flipped through one of the manuals before holding it out towards Grissom, "After going through everything, it started to look like my main issues will be knowing the Employee Conduct bits. I can't say I would ever have a need to know anything about budgetary issues or what constitutes are overtime."

"Ah, but the average individual doesn't have much desire to work in, or even with, law enforcement," Gil pointed out. "And everyone is fallible, obviously. The Code of Ethics is nothing more than a guideline. In an ideal society, everyone would behave the way that it specifies. In reality, however, provided you're doing your job and following the code within reason, very little is said."

There were, of course, always exceptions to that rule. He'd had his career messed with many times by those who didn't like the way he worked, or the fact that he didn't partake in the politics of it all. But that was neither here nor there and he saw no reason to delve into such things at the moment. Instead, he simply said, "All right. If you want to focus on the Employee Conduct, we can do that. How can I help?"

"No. Often times, it's worse," Sherlock said, a deep furrow settling in his brow. "Because there is little discernible difference between the psychological profile of a criminal as there is between those that place themselves into law enforcement positions. It is often opportunity and circumstances which separate one from the other," Sherlock said before glancing up at Grissom with a thoughtful expression. "Granted, that's often the only things which prevent people from falling into crime, the lack of opportunity or the necessary circumstances to do such a thing."

Of course, Sherlock was pretty certain that that made it clear he didn't consider crime completely out of the realm of his options even as he would rather be solving them than committing them, so he didn't linger too long on the subject, changing it back to the matter at hand.

"I need to make sure that my memory system works," Sherlock said. "And I can hardly do that if I have the information directly in front of me where I can just glance at it if I can't recall things with ease. I'm hardly above cheating when the situation calls for it. But, I suppose, that's rather obvious," Sherlock said, realizing belatedly that their text conversation pretty much already covered that fact.
