Huck had been doing a little light reading--skimming back through the messages on the infernal wireless telephone device. He didn't bother sending the man who was not Pap a note. He did leave one for Miss Lexi, which consisted of five letters--O, U, T, H, and F--scribbled on an old newspaper, and lit out across town in search of Eames' house. He made one stop along the way, to 'borrow' a spade from a random neighbor, and cut across a few others yards to get there.

Cities had apparently changed a great deal since the invention of the steamboat, and he'd sooner trespass than be mowed down by a speeding horseless carriage.

Once there, he tromped up to the front door, spade resting casually over his shoulder, and knocked. Loudly. And then, without waiting for an answer, he proceeded 'round to the back to investigate.

"I suppose that's something, alright. My hair's better'n pap's," he replied, switching to Huck's accent for a moment as he looked back round at Escher, who seemed to be scrabbling at something. Huck's next words froze him where he stood, though, and he turned back very slowly to face the boy.

"You want to hunt for buried treasure... in my back garden? Is there a map of some sort that indicates this? Or have you just decided that I seem the type to hide things under hydrangea bushes or whatever?"

Huck blinked a little at the change of accent, trying to decide if he was being mocked. And also listening when Eames switched back, just in case he ever needed to pretend to be an English valet, ever again.

"I read," he drawled, "That you had lava pits and booby traps about the place. And that I was a pirate. Why else would you have booby traps if there if there warn't no booty?"

"Did you, now? And where, pray tell, do you think I'm hiding these booby traps and lava pits?" Eames asked, spreading his arms wide as an invitation for Huck to look and see. With his eyes only, of course. "Leave your shovel by the wall when you go hunting, by the way," he added as he took another smoke, and then had another thought.

"Are you staying for dinner? Do I need to let your lady friend know where you are?"

"What if I promised to only dig where the weeds are?" Huck bartered, resting the shovel on the ground and folding his hands over the handle, as if he were attempting to look like the picture of innocence. If someone had taken a snapshot of that moment, there ought to be a slightly crooked halo drawn over his head--held up by a pair of horns.

He also should have known to leave the hustling to Tom Sawyer.

"Miss Lexi?" Huck felt a bit of heat crawling up his neck and wished his face were dirtier, to hide the flush of embarrassment. "I left her a note."

Eames frowned for a moment, slightly bemused. "...You do realise you just offered to weed my garden, don't you?" he pointed out, and then nearly burst out laughing when he recognised a look from plenty of photographs of him from school. "And we're sort-of-twins, remember? That look won't fool me."

He said nothing about the sudden reddish tinge to Huck's face when he mentioned 'Miss Lexi', and just talked over it. He'd send her a text later anyway. "A note? Excellent. So, do you want to stay for something to eat while we work out where this possible treasure is buried?"

	"All right," he agreed, moving to lean the borrowed shovel up against the side of the house. He rarely, if ever, turned down a free meal--and since this fellow didn't seem drunk and looking for something to beat on, he saw no reason to do so now. "Whatcha havin'?" (Reply to this) (Parent)
