When: Immediately after this
Rating: TBD

He couldn't breathe.

That was all that Luke could pay attention to, as he sat there on the floor, staring at the PDA on the floor nearby. He'd been avoiding thinking about all the things he'd had to do, thanks to his monetary situation, and the government coming after him for no reason, other than being different. The longer he'd been here, though, away from the danger of government hunting and the constant question of where he was spending the next night, where his next meal came from, he was forced to do something he didn't want to: think. Every time he closed his eyes, another little tidbit he'd tried to forget kept coming back, making the teen want to retch. He'd already given in to the urge to cry, and his face was tearstreaked as he rocked himself slightly. He curled in on himself a little, staring at the small screen as he sat there, cheek resting on his knees. Gabriel needed to hurry.

He couldn't breathe.

Gabriel didn't bother with the door. He didn't bother with the walk between his apartment and Luke's. And he did was focus in on the location of the one person that he probably knew better than himself and teleported, quietly thanking Hiro and Molly both as he landed solidly next to the boy who was like a brother to him. It staggered Gabriel for a moment, taking in the change of Luke's appearance, just how much he didn't look like the kid that he'd left behind in that New York apartment when he'd went to look for Peter.

God, two years. Almost two years.

Dropping down next to Luke on the floor, Gabriel reached out and wrapped his arms around the teenager. They might both be grown now. And the reasons for the tears had changed so much overtime, but this was hardly a situation that the two of them were unfamiliar with. Only this time, there was no step-father to beat down, no neglectful mother for him to yell at, no group of peers to idly threaten and scare so they would leave him alone.

No, this time, there was only Luke.

And guilt wasn't dealt with nearly as easy.

His breath hitched hard in his throat as he felt the change in the air that signaled someone else coming into the room, out of nowhere. There was no sound of a door opening, no footfalls. Just a sudden feeling that he was not alone, and the dark shadow of someone nearby, out of the corner of his eye. Luke fought back another choked sob, arms wrapping tighter around his knees, pulling the teen into a ball, wrapped in on himself as if it would protect him from his own personal pain. He didn't want this; he didn't want to be here, talking about what had happened to him. He didn't want to remember . . . but the longer he was here, the more he couldn't escape it, and it was killing him.

He managed to whisper Gabriel's name, between hitching sobs, but beyond that speech was beyond his ability at the moment.

Gabriel didn't attempt to murmur any platitudes. He'd seen how his last 'It's all right' had been responded to, so instead, he kept his tongue, holding onto the boy that was as good as a younger brother to him as he cried, allowing the emotion to flood out of the younger man.

Gabriel could have taken it away. All of it, the pain, the guilt, the frustration, all of the negative emotions that he could feel swirling around in Luke via one of the many powers that he'd accidentally picked up off of the detainees in DC. But he wasn't going to force something like that upon Luke. Not unless it became absolutely necessary. Recovering naturally was far better for him, far more likely to hold than any artificial support.

Instead, Gabriel just stayed quiet, rubbing his hand over Luke's back and cradling him like he had so many times before when the worst of a situation had gotten to the boy. Luke had a gentle and well meaning soul even if the things that he was forced into often times meant that he was forced beyond it. Gabriel could only imagine how something like this had to be effecting him.

"I'm right here, bud," Gabriel finally spoke up at last. "And I'm not going anywhere this time."
