john watson is not dating sherlock holmes ([info]faithfulblogger) wrote in [info]colligo_threads,
It took John a moment to process what Mac had said, and he was sincerely glad he hadn't been taking a sip of his drink when the man spoke. It wasn't that he had said anything especially complicated or confusing, it was just that people didn't say things like that about Sherlock. A little full of himself? That was all he thought? Either Sherlock had been unnaturally well behaved or Mac was the single most tolerant person he had ever met. Either way, it was baffling and a little awe inspiring to find someone who could handle Sherlock's presence so well. Even Lestrade had never managed that.

"I'm sorry," he said after a moment, "I...he was...a little full of himself? Sherlock? I should hate to meet anyone who you find annoying if he was just a little full of himself. I mean...Sherlock's my best friend. I would die for him. But he's also a complete dick most of the time. It's just...his default setting. Most people have a hard time putting up with it." He smiled slightly. "Still, that definitely explains how you managed to accomplish what most people fail at...getting him to like you. You listened to his ideas and talked things out with him. Most of the time..." He stopped. He still hated Anderson and Sally so much for playing into Moriarty's hands so completely. "Most of the time people just tell him to fuck off."

He decided he rather liked this fellow. He was treating Sherlock like a person not a freak, a rarity, and he seemed like a decent sort of man. Looking over at him, he noted the way he carried himself and silently cursed Sherlock for the way he unconsciously catalogued things he noticed about people now. Still, he wasn't anywhere near Sherlock's, or presumably Mac's, level. If he hadn't been a military man himself, he might not have even seen it. "So," he said conversationally, "which branch were you?" It seemed like a safe enough topic, being something they at least had in common.
