Who: John Watson and Mac Taylor.
What: Hanging out and discussing Sherlock things.
Where: Harvelle's.
When: Evening.
Rating: TBD.
Status: In progress.

Since becoming Sherlock's flatmate, colleague and friend, John hadn't really had much of a social life outside the other man. He dated of course, and kept in touch with old friends, but he didn't spend much time out with other people. Any exceptions tended to be people from the Met. He and Greg got on quite well and sometimes met up at the pub to watch rugby and football matches. Still, his life unquestionably centred around Sherlock Holmes. What that said for his sanity probably wasn't very good. Of course, the flip side of that was that Sherlock really didn't get on with anyone but John. To be completely honest, he had a difficult time not being a complete dick to anyone but John. No, that wasn't quite right. He was a complete dick to everyone, but John just tolerated it better than most.

So it was, understandably John thought, a surprise to find that Sherlock got on quite well with the head of the crime lab. That left John somewhat curious about this Mac Taylor fellow. After all, it took a certain type of person to put up with his best friend. Part of him was jealous too, because he knew he wasn't all that clever and he worried if Sherlock had a friend who was he wouldn't have need of him, but he pushed that aside and focused on the curiosity. And that was what led to drinks with Mac at the pub. He wanted to get to know the man who could both tolerate Sherlock's personality and who seemed to have earned the detective's friendship. If nothing else, Mac and Sherlock getting on meant he would need to interact with the man regularly and knowing him one-on-one would help with that.

"So," he said, taking a sip of his pint and glancing over at Mac, "I was a bit surprised when Sherlock told me you too got on fairly well. It's just...Sherlock doesn't...get on with people, as it were. And they don't...well, to be honest, most of the time people can't stand him. So, it was something of a surprise, as I said."

John Watson. Mac was currently sitting in a bar, having a drink with Doctor John Watson. If anyone had tried telling him that such a thing would ever happen, he never would have believed it. After all, everyone knew that the man wasn't real. He was a fictional character in a series of stories, created by one of - in Mac's personal opinion, at least - the greatest literary contributors in history.

Yet, apparently, in the strange little city where realities intermingled, John Watson was very much real. And currently was sitting beside him at a bar, sipping on a beer and wanting to discuss Sherlock Holmes. Which, if Mac was being perfectly honest, was probably the least unusual bit about the entire surreal situation.

Still. Mac hadn't served in the military for as long as he had, nor been the head of the New York Crime Lab, without learning how to hold his own in situations that seemed completely unrealistic. He wasn't one to wear his emotions on his sleeve and certainly wasn't about to start voicing his disbelief about someone's claim to being real versus his understanding of their fictional status, either. Particularly not in a place like Colligo where he had already come across many things that simply should not exist yet clearly, without a shadow of a doubt, did. So, while still somewhat uncertain whether or not this was the Doctor John Watson or not, he kept all of that to himself and simply focused on enjoying the meeting for what it was. Because even if this wasn't the fictional character somehow come to life, clearly the man was interesting and, if nothing else, was very close with someone who was apparently the Sherlock Holmes. Or at least a damn close facsimile.

Taking a sip of his own beer, Mac couldn't help but grin a bit when John brought the man up much like he'd expected. He supposed, from the doctor's perspective, it likely was a little odd that someone else got on well enough with the consulting detective. After all, Sherlock wasn't exactly a people person and certainly had no qualms in pointing out the flaws in those around him. However, Mac really didn't have a reason for why Sherlock seemed to think highly of him and decided that was probably the best route to take. Honesty, plain and to the point, rarely led him astray.

Shrugging slightly, he tossed the man beside him a small, modest sort of grin. "I'm not sure what you want me to say, John," he admitted. "He showed up at my crime scene, we talked through the evidence, and eventually settled on a likely suspect. Was he a little full of himself?" Mac shrugged. "Sure. But he knows his stuff and I'm not all that interested in who breaks the case as long as the end results are the same."

It took John a moment to process what Mac had said, and he was sincerely glad he hadn't been taking a sip of his drink when the man spoke. It wasn't that he had said anything especially complicated or confusing, it was just that people didn't say things like that about Sherlock. A little full of himself? That was all he thought? Either Sherlock had been unnaturally well behaved or Mac was the single most tolerant person he had ever met. Either way, it was baffling and a little awe inspiring to find someone who could handle Sherlock's presence so well. Even Lestrade had never managed that.

"I'm sorry," he said after a moment, "I...he was...a little full of himself? Sherlock? I should hate to meet anyone who you find annoying if he was just a little full of himself. I mean...Sherlock's my best friend. I would die for him. But he's also a complete dick most of the time. It's just...his default setting. Most people have a hard time putting up with it." He smiled slightly. "Still, that definitely explains how you managed to accomplish what most people fail at...getting him to like you. You listened to his ideas and talked things out with him. Most of the time..." He stopped. He still hated Anderson and Sally so much for playing into Moriarty's hands so completely. "Most of the time people just tell him to fuck off."

He decided he rather liked this fellow. He was treating Sherlock like a person not a freak, a rarity, and he seemed like a decent sort of man. Looking over at him, he noted the way he carried himself and silently cursed Sherlock for the way he unconsciously catalogued things he noticed about people now. Still, he wasn't anywhere near Sherlock's, or presumably Mac's, level. If he hadn't been a military man himself, he might not have even seen it. "So," he said conversationally, "which branch were you?" It seemed like a safe enough topic, being something they at least had in common.
