Who: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Lily Potter. (Cameo from Luke)
What: Collecting Remus from the library.
When: Sunday night, shortly after Remus’ network post.
Where: Starting outside the library, then to Lily's flat.
Rating: Medium-ish, probably. For discussions of violence and language.
Status: Closed. In progress.

Sirius had apparated to a spot just around the corner from the library, and for a moment he seriously considered just leaving and hiding in one of the rather downmarket places he’d taken to frequenting these days, if only because they decreased the chance of him running into someone he knew. But then there was a part of him, the part that happened to be making the decisions, that really, really wanted to see Remus. Even if he wasn’t the one Sirius had spent the best part of a year sharing a bed with, but some slightly older, more broken version who would probably rather Sirius got run over by the Hogwarts express. At least it was Remus. At least he was alive and here and…

Sirius’ legs had carried him off and around the corner towards the library, and that first moment when he saw him on the steps was like a punch to the gut. Sirius hesitated for a moment, his step faltering. Godric, he looked so miserable. If this had been a month ago, Sirius would have just bounded towards the other man and attempted to rugby tackle him to the ground, just to try and lighten the mood. But even socially-inappropriate Sirius Black realised that probably wouldn’t be the best course of action. As much as he might wish it to be.

He took a breath, curled his hands into empty fists at his side and then released them again, wishing he could lose the tension across his shoulders as easily as he called hesitantly across to the figure stood by the library.

“Remus?”

At that second there was another noise of someone arriving, and Sirius turned to meet Lily, breathtakingly glad once again that she was here. For once Sirius was capable of seeing he was in way over his head here.

She turned to glare at Sirius when he nudged her but knew the look the moment she caught it. Bouncing Luke slightly, she waited for Sirius to show the best proof they have. Other than questions Lily could do nothing to show she was who she said to be, and hopefully Sirius' transformation would be enough. After all Sirius wouldn't accept someone if he didn't know they were who they said they were.

"We changed our secret keeper, no one knew. We thought that Sirius would be too obvious an option and no one would think we'd pick Peter, and Sirius already thought someone was on to him. But he was working for Voldemort the entire time. Sirius was falsely accused. He was found at the crime but Peter was the one who killed the muggles, removed his finger then turned into a rat and left. Sirius was found there and caught. He was entirely innocent."

Sirius ducked his head and felt his two spots of colour bloom on high on his cheekbones as Lily recounted the story. He couldn't tell if he was embarrassed or angry or upset or some weird combination of the three. Probably the latter, if he knew himself. But he really didn't want to make eye contact with anyone except Luke, who blinked at him and blew a bubble. When she was done, Sirius looked up and forced himself to meet Remus' eye while he waited for a reaction.

Peter had been the Secret Keeper. Peter had been working as a spy for Voldemort. Peter had betrayed James and Lily, not Sirius. Peter had framed Sirius for those murders. When Remus thought about it, really thought hard, it all made sense. Sirius had been James' best friend; he wouldn't have given him up to McGonagall let alone Voldemort. And Lily of all people wouldn't lie for Sirius, which meant it must be true. Everything they were telling him must be true.

Glancing back and forth between them, his grip on his wand slowly loosened and his hand moved away from his pocket, no longer worried that they were trying to trick him or would attack him, "You're telling the truth." It wasn't a question, but a statement.

"I'm telling the truth," she confirmed. "Give me Veritaserum if you want any more proof."

Not that she liked the thought of being forced to tell the truth that way when she was but she would do anything to make him realise. Glancing up at Sirius, she walked over to Remus and took one of his hands in hers. She was just glad that she was good at keeping Luke in one arm.

"It's us, Moony. I promise you that."

Thank Merlin. Sirius felt a huge lump of the tension he'd been holding escape his muscles, a weight lifting off his shoulders. He could deal with all this as long as Remus believed he hadn't done all the things they had said he'd done. The story still made him angry - Sirius thought it probably always would - but here they all had a chance to live as if it had never happened. Kind of. They were still missing James...

Still, he couldn't hide his relief at the way Remus had dropped his defensive hold on the wand and Lily had reached out to touch him. Sirius didn't dare make physical contact with Remus just yet - the dynamic between them would be different, adn that wasn't a change he wanted to think about facing. This would have to do for now, and at the moment it seemed like he could have got a lot worse deal. Instead Sirius smiled his usual handsome, crooked grin - the first really genuine one he'd managed in a while.

"Can we go somewhere warm before we explain everything else?" he asked. "I'm freezing my bollocks off."

When Lily took is hand, Remus found himself squeezing it almost instantly as if to make sure that she was really real and not just a figment of his imagination; it certainly wouldn't be the first time he'd thought he'd seen his dead friends since that night. Looking up into Lily's eyes, there really was no denying that it was her, because only one person had those eyes. Well except for Harry.

Glancing away from Lily and the baby, he brought his attention to Sirius and stared at him for a moment, before his words sunk in and he nodded. "Alright." Remus had been so distracted with whether or not these were really his friends that he hadn't felt the cold until now.

She smiled at the squeeze and felt happiness run right the way through her. He seemed so willing to accept them now and that surely had to be better than the way he was when she first said hello. She much preferred this. When his eyes met hers she continued to keep looking at him just to make sure he saw whatever it was he was looking for.

But then Sirius had to go and ruin the moment.

"Always the charmer, Black," she replied with a laugh as she looked over at him before smiling back at Remus. "We'll take you back to our flat."

Sirius wriggled his eyebrows in Lily's direction, grin still splashed over his face before he nodded in agreement. There was, of course, going to be the issue of who was staying where - there would have been room for them all once, but now there was another bedroom needed. Sirius supposed he'd just transform and sleep on the sofa. It was comfy enough, he supposed.

"You take Luke," he told Lily. Sirius hesitated for a moment, trying to pause initial reaction when it came to taking hold of Remus, then reached out to grasp the other man's familiarly bony elbow. After all, Remus didn't know where he was apparating to, and knowing their luck he'd end up in the lake with the squid. "I'll take Moony. Alright?" he glanced across at the fair-haired man, forcing the twist of his stomach down.

Our flat? As in Lily and Sirius? But what about James? Remus didn't have long to dwell on these questions because then Sirius spoke and took hold of his arm, causing him to jerk away, which he regretted almost instantly. Remus hadn't exactly been touched by anyone in sometime with the exception of Lily having taken his hand only a few moments ago.

"I apologize...."He He said sheepishly as he glanced at Sirius and what the other had said sunk in and he turned to Lily, obviously confused, "Luke? Don't you mean Harry?"

She nodded at Sirius' suggestion for getting there but when Remus jerked away from him she instantly looked to Sirius. She knew this wouldn't be easy for him and even more so given what had happened. Biting her lip for a second, she tried to think if there was anything she could subtly say to help him, to comfort him in a way, but all she could think of was a look of sympathy. But then Remus was addressing her and she had to put on a little smile.

"That's the way of this place. I was here as a teenager then the next thing I new I was an adult and pregnant. But Harry had been here for a period of time and when the baby was born we decided, even though he was Harry it would be easier to give him another first name just to stop any confusion. So he became Luke Harry Potter and...well you were here for a time and you were made his godfather, because Sirius had...the other Harry."

Sirius blinked across at Remus, doing a rather good job of not letting raw hurt splash plainly across his face. Instead he pulled his arms in, crossing them defensively across his chest as if that might protect him from anything else. Quite frankly, Remus could have smacked him one and Sirius was quite sure it wouldn’t have affected him as much as that one tiny gesture. All of a sudden he was feeling completely miserable, and he wanted nothing more but to turn away and leave them both to it. But he couldn’t, because it was Remus and Lily, so he had to shove what this was doing to him right down and carry on.

Sirius pulled himself together to listen to the conversation at the end of Lily’s explanation about Luke. There were so many bits and pieces for Remus to get his head around – Sirius couldn’t blame him for being a bit overwhelmed. So he stood to the side for a moment, his arms still crossed over his chest, head ducked down so he was examining his feet on the pavement.

Remus listened to Lily's explanation as he watched Sirius out of the corner of his eye; it was quite obvious that the animagus wasn't happy and Remus was fairly certain it was because of him. The last time he had shrugged Sirius off like that had been when after he'd almost succeeded in getting Severus killed. "I'm...I mean to say, I was his Godfather?" He couldn't help but smile slightly as he looked from Lily to Luke and then back; it would take some getting used to that this baby wasn't actually Harry, but then again, this entire place would take some getting used to.

"Yes. Sirius got Harry back home, why can't you get Harry, or Luke as he is here, in this place?"

She gave him a gentle smile before bouncing Luke slightly as he snuffled in his sleep. It was like he knew who was there, or maybe he just hadn't completely gotten over the apparating earlier. And now she would have to upset him once more to get home but at least in the flat she had things readily available to soothe him.

"Why don't we go back now? I can get you something warm to drink then the three of us can talk more. Sirius will take you, I need to keep a firm hold on Luke. If that's okay?"

Sirius drummed his fingers against his sides, resisting the urge to fidget too much as they discussed Luke. Of course, in Sirius' head there wasn't that much distinction between the baby Harry and the one currently in Lily's arms. Then there was the adult Harry, who had been here for so long until he too had been taken away.

Fucking hell, he really needed to smoke.

Sirius glanced up when he heard his name, pulled from his own looping thoughts and back into a conversation he really wasn't enjoying. He was conflicted. There was a part of him that didn't want to let Remus out of his sight ever again, and there was a part of him that couldn't bear the way thr other man was looking at him. Sirius glanced over at Lily, as if trying to draw some kind of reassurance from her, then nodded once and offered Remus his arm.
