He'd read Green Eggs And Ham twice through, because when he closed the book the first time, the cardboard cover snapped and Caden stirred. He was careful not to make that mistake a second time, and gently set the book aside. He lay still for a moment more before slowly moving to slither out of the four year old's bed. Caden's hand twitched, but he didn't open his eyes.

Sam stood and smiled down at his sleeping son. He walked backward to the door. He pulled the door shut slowly, and leaned his head against it for a moment. He needed to talk to Ruby about Juno, and it was a conversation he didn't want to have. He'd been trying to keep the peace, but he had come to a breaking point.

Dean had died. He'd been brought back, but the fact was he'd been lost, gone for a few days, and that brought family back in to focus. Juno had given birth to Caden, she had given him the most precious gift, but she wasn't Caden's mother. Sam had been his father from the moment he took his first breath. Ruby had come back in to Sam's life some time after, but she was the one Caden called Mommy.

The stress between Juno and Ruby couldn't be over looked any more. Sam couldn't keep pushing it under the rug and hope it would go away. He knew he'd been wrong when he suggested Juno come over to study, as she had done when she'd been pregnant. She wasn't pregnant now, and having her around so often was only sending mixed signals to everyone involved.

Sam pushed off the wall by Caden's door. Ruby was in their bedroom, and Sam made his way there. He smiled at her across the room, and had that feeling that she could read in his expression that he needed to talk to her. He tried to put it off another minute, and crossed the room to lean down and kiss her cheek. "Hey, you. He's out. Only had to read it twice tonight."

Ruby sighed. "You want to be her friend, Sam. I understand that. But you need to think about Caden. Having her over all the time isn't healthy for him.

She doesn't like me very much. While I'm trying, and you know I am, I don't think she's ever going to change her stance on me. She didn't like me before, and I don't think she's going to warm up to me now, especially since Caden calls me Mom."

Ruby sighed. "There's something I should probably tell you actually. It has a lot to do with why I'm so uneasy around her. Do remember when we could see each other for those two weeks back when she was first here? When we weren't telling anyone about us, except for Jade and Claire?

Apparently, she figured it out, and she confronted me about it. And she made it pretty clear at the time that if I was going to be in your life...she didn't want you having Caden. At all."

Ruby sat up, grabbing her PDA off of the end table. She was quiet for a few moments, as she went through the old network posts, looking for when Juno confronted her originally. When she found the conversation>, she handed the PDA over to Sam.

"Here. You can see what she said for yourself. Should I have told you? Probably, but shortly after she said, she left, and you seemed upset, so I didn't want to say anything. And you seemed so eager to have go right back into yours and Caden's lives when she came back that I just didn't think to tell you that it made me uncomfortable."

Sam listened as Ruby talked. He hadn't realised things were so bad, or that he was so jaded about it all. He'd thought he was doing a good thing, keeping Juno involved. He considered her a friend, and he'd been blind to everything else.

When Ruby handed him her PDA, he took it, hands brushing against hers. He held her gaze for a moment before looking at the conversation. The final comment left him feeling awkward and he needed a moment to process it.

"Ruby, I didn't know." He shook his head. He should have known. He knew, likely everyone in town knew that Juno hadn't really let go. There were residents of the town who had thought Juno and Sam were going to raise the baby together, before he was born. Sam wasn't sure he wanted to open that can of worms and tell Ruby. It was a moot point, because that had never been the plan.

He closed his eyes briefly, as he handed the PDA back to Ruby. "I'll talk to her first thing. I'm not sure if she has class tomorrow, but I'll find out and I'll tell her this isn't going to work. You're Caden's mother and she needs to accept that if she wants to be part of his life."

He felt he was making a quick decision, but he also felt it was the right decision. Caden came first, always, but Ruby fell in line right there with him. They were his nuclear family. Juno had hit on a very appropriate metaphore with the satellite comment.

Sam had to consider the needs of his family, first, no matter how difficult the path became.

"She means a lot to you," Ruby said. "I understand that. She gave you Caden, I know you wanted her to be involved in his life as a good friend. But sometimes I'm not sure if she knows the limits of involvement.

I'm not saying, she can't come over for the occasional dinner or you and Caden aren't allowed to talk to her anymore. But...she needs to understand that we're a family. The three of us. I'm not saying she can't be a friend. But that's what she is. A friend."

"I need to focus on my family." Sam nodded. He hated the thought of telling Juno he needed her to back off, but it was true. Even though she had been gone from the city for a couple months, and Caden had skipped over four years in that time frame, she was too close, and looking at it objectively, Sam could see that she wasn't breaking the ties. He had to make her pull back for the sake of his family.

"Caden and you are my priority. I want Caden to know who she is, and what she did for him. I've always known I was going to tell him, when he's old enough to understand. But right now, I think he's just confused. He knows you're his mother, hell he's the one who told us that, but you're right. I need to ask Juno to back off. We need to focus on us, for a little while."

"I hate when the right thing is the hard thing too." Sam sighed. He shifted against Ruby. He knew what he had to do. He didn't want to do it, but for the time being, it was the best thing for everyone involved, including Juno. Sam knew Juno wouldn't agree, but he hoped that she knew he wouldn't do anything to hurt her out right. She was too close to Caden, the child she had birthed and then given up. She needed to distance herself from him, and Sam had to be the one to enforce it. He hated his role sometimes, but being Caden's father was his number one priority.

	Ruby ran her fingers through his hair. "I know it's hard. But in end, we really need to think about Caden." Ruby herself was still getting used to being a mother. "I know." Sam took Ruby's hand in his, twined their fingers. "I'll talk to Juno. I don't want to cut her out of our lives, but you're right. She's too close, and that's partly my fault. There's no excuse for what she said to you a couple months back, but I wasn't very clear, or very strict about the boundaries." He brought Ruby's hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "Give me tomorrow to take care of it."

"With the name Winchester? Life's never easy." Sam smiled a little smile. He had been cursed years before he was born, and after six months of normalcy, his life had been put on a treacherous path of pain and destruction. No matter what he'd been through though, he'd come out on top and this would be no different. He'd get through it, uncomfortable confrontations and all.

"I just hope I don't push her away completely." If that was the case, he couldn't blame her. Now that he'd been forced to confront the issue, he could see how he'd been sending mixed signals from the very beginning. That was the peace keeper in him, trying to keep the peace in the moment and ignoring the future ramifications.

"I know you don't want to hurt her feelings. And I'm not telling you to. But there's a very fine line between being a family friend and being more involved than you should. I know it's hard for you, and I'd go with you, but I think seeing me there might make things even worse." Ruby sighed.

"You know I'm trying, Sam. I've been nice. I've invited her over for dinner. I've talked to her and been as civil as possible. But I can only be so nice."

	"Oh? Like what?" Sam pulled back to look in her eyes. He smiled, and brought a hand up to caress her cheek. He wasn't so much in the mood, after the conversation they'd just had and with the conversation he needed to have with Juno looming over him, but Ruby had a way with him.
