Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:gwen cooper, ianto jones, jack harkness

Who: Jack, Ianto, and Gwen
What: Criss-crossed-reality-Torchwood-folks meeting up for the first time
Where: Rose's house (where Jack and Ianto are staying)
When: Backdated to the day that Gwen arrived; continued from this post
Warnings: Possible language ahead
Status: In progress

While they'd waited for Gwen to find her way to Rose's house-turned-Western-domicile, Jack had taken care of mashing up bananas and cooking up porridge for Gwen's baby to eat, and Ianto had located some appropriate cloth for eventual nappy use. After all, Ianto had more knowledge of fabric, and Jack had more experience with food and babies. Best to have supplies ready before Anwen needed a change. When that was done, they settled to wait.

Gwen caught Jack's hand before he could pull away, squeezing it a little. "She just doesn't like to share. And neither do I. Not after everything that has happened recently."

She nodded when Jack mentioned Ianto, still a little unsure on how to react.

"What's wrong with sharing?" He gave her hand a quick squeeze in return. "I mean, she's a bit young to learn about manners and sharing, and you're the mama, so who could blame her? But it's hard to know how to treat what's happened to you recently without knowing what happened to you. So, if I put my big foot in my very big mouth, don't hold it against me; I just don't know better."

Ianto had intentionally hung back in the other room for similar reasons-- unsure if Gwen would freak out on seeing him. It must be strange enough to meet an alternate version of someone without it being an alternate of someone who was dead to you.

"How about you drop those things and find a comfortable seat? We don't have a high-chair for her, so, uh, how do you want to feed her?"

"Well she is young, young children get jealous very easily. Even babies."

She knew that for sure, and although children could be easily accepting to others Anwen seemed to have her mother's natural suspicions about some people. But she nodded at what Jack said. "Maybe once we get settled I can tell you what's happening."

When he told her to drop what she had managed to grab, shedumped it on the floor and began to walk to find a seat. "I can just keep her on my lap."

"I guess it's that whole 'I want all mummy's attention' thing. Only she gets to be hugged. Lap it is, then."

That was a bit more literally dropping things than he meant, but ah well. The place was transformed, after all, so it was already different.

"And tell both of us, or you'll have to repeat yourself, or I'll have to tell it and maybe mess up the details." He turned his head so he could call towards the next room. "Ianto, Gwen's here."

Ianto was in the next room, trying to get things ready as far as nappies and a little semi-bed for the baby, and seeing which of their things would be the best fit for Gwen if she decided she'd prefer trousers.

He thought it would best for Gwen to know that he was there, instead of coming up on him unexpectedly, so he left Jack to do the greeting, listening to the conversation through the open door.

When he heard Jack call him, he headed slowly into the main room, stopping in the doorway, what he considered a safe, non-threatening distance. "Hello, Gwen."

“Well she can be like that at times. Other times she can be easy to give to someone else for a cuddle.”

Gwen nodded, lifting Anwen higher into her hold. It would make much more sense to tell the two of them together about what happened in her universe, rather than having to go through it more than once. But then Ianto was in front of her and she felt a mix of so many things at the one time.

“Ianto...” she whispered out.

He stood there in the doorway. He didn't feel awkward, really, but of course he had an idea of what it must be like for her.

"Gwen. It's me. Ianto. Really me." He stayed in the doorway, wanting Gwen to at least accept the sight of him.

She really didn’t want Jack to feel left out but the sight of Ianto, standing in front of her, had her clinging onto Ianto in a way that would not compromise her daughter. She wanted Anwen to still be comfortable of course. But Ianto had died, whilst she was pregnant with the little girl in her arms, and she would take everything she could to believe he was really there.

“Oh god.”

Jack didn't feel left out at all; this was a very emotional moment for Gwen and it wasn't about him, and that was fine. If he was ignored at some less serious time, though, he'd probably get pouty.

He came up alongside them and held out his hands, gently offering to take Anwen if Gwen needed that-- and if Anwen would allow the separation. It was hard to properly cling to someone while holding a baby.

She didn't want to give Anwen over, but if anyone else should hold Anwen then Jack should. He was a major part of her life and he didn't really get many chances back in her universe. This Jack never even experienced finding out about her pregnancy. After a moment of thinking, she gently passed her daughter over and clung a little more to Ianto.

He was a bit surprised at her reaction, considering how wary she had seemed when they talked earlier. It certainly wasn't unwelcome, though, and he wrapped his arms around her as tightly as he dared while she held Anwen. Once Jack took the baby, though, he pulled Gwen in more, letting her reassure herself that he was really there.

The moment she was given the option, she had held him tighter and was glad when he responded like that. She may still be a little unsure but all that logic in the back of her head could disappear until she had the chance to see Ianto and tell herself he was really here. Especially after seeing his body like that.

She nodded at that, but didn't really care what he was trying to express. She didn't want him to be sorry for anything, either in sympathy or guilt, because he had nothing to do with it. He wasn't...well, her Ianto.

While Ianto and Gwen hugged, Jack held Anwen comfortably, making the occasional face at her and letting her explore his chin with her little hands. He kept quiet at first so he wouldn't interrupt them, but as an awkward silence grew, he had to jump into it.

"Been awhile since I was surrounded by Welsh. What do we think her first word will be-- 'baa'?"

She pulled away from Ianto's arms at Jack's words, a slightly playful glare aimed at him. Glancing at Ianto, she shook her head before looking back to Jack. "You're outnumbered by the amount of Welsh people, we will take you down."

"He can't resist us, whether he protests or not." Some would find it strange how quickly they had fallen into the old team considering the situation, but that was Torchwood. The bond was too strong to be broken by something like this.

"Oh, I comprehend the accent very much..." He got distracted for a moment, watching Ianto's mouth and thinking about accents.

Anwen, though, was very 'terrifying' indeed; Jack yelped when his attention was snapped back by the ear-grab, but laughed when he realized what was happening. "Okay, okay, I won't mock the Welsh in your highness's presence! Can I have my ear back now?"

"Mind focused on other things around the baby please," she teased a little when she noticed Jack's gaze fall to Ianto's mouth. She didn't mean it completely serious but part of her did genuinely not want that type of thing discussed in front of her baby or even slightly considered.

"I told you, don't anger her she's terrifying," she grinned and reached out, releasing Jack from Anwen's grasp.

"Oh, all right, we'll behave. As much as we can. A little bit of flirting has kind of become automatic by this point."

"We wouldn't like her when she's angry?" he joked. He stepped back more to let Gwen hold Anwen.

"No you wouldn't. She comes from Rhys and I of course you wouldn't," she replied as she held Anwen closer just so she wouldn't be able to pull at Jack again. Of course, she would probably end up grabbing onto Gwen's hair now.

"I do have experience around babies, y'know. I can handle flirting without scandalizing the young. Not flirting at all would be asking for too much!" He laughed a little at Anwen's expression. "Oh come on, I could go toe-to-toe with Rhys. Not saying I'd win, hell of a punch he's got..."

"That's true." Jack was usually really good with kids, probably because he was still one himself whenever he got the chance. "That would be like asking you not to breathe, or something!" He laughed. "You have gone toe-to-toe with Rhys, as I recall. It was quite homoerotic, if I remember correctly. Those were my exact words, I believe."

"And I do have to breathe! I think those were my words, actually. You said something about stags and antlers...? But he slugged me at their wedding, not that time."

He gives Gwen a curious look at that little tidbit of info. The Rhys that they knew certainly knew Torchwood, but Jack wouldn't describe him as close, exactly.

"Well, what's yours is mine and what's mine is yours, right?" He grinned fondly over at Jack. "But it was that, too. Nice to see someone stand up to you." He thought about that. "Okay, but you deserved it."

"But since I'm yours, does that mean I'm mine? Whoever said it... we said it! Can't fail with 'we'." He mock pouts. "I wouldn't have said it if I knew it was really his mother! I know better than to go insulting someone's mother, especially when I've interrupted their wedding!" Then again, he can't quite remember what he said, if it would've applied only to the presumed alien. Whoops.

Awww. Much as Jack couldn't have imagined Gwen so pleased with a baby in the past, she seemed natural at it now. She always did have that protective streak anyway. And something that's hers? Oh, VERY protective. "Is your Rhys still in haulage?"

"At least it was kind of true," she said with a shrug. To be honest, Rhys' mother could be a pain in the arse if you spent too much time with her. Too much time being more than five minutes.

"Sort of," she replied. "I mean, it's hard to keep a job like that when you're in hiding."

He laughed as Jack tried to puzzle it out. "Right! Can't go wrong with we!" He shook his head. "Oh, poor Jack. Sometimes you just can't win." But he does remember Rhys' mum as particularly overbearing.

"Maybe...maybe we should see about food, and then talk about that." They did need to eat, especially Anwen, and that was a part of Gwen he knew nothing about. All of this was a mystery to him.

"That's how it works, right? You get married, you become a 'we', but let's never do the 'letting ourselves go' part. I don't want to put on weight. Like, oh..." Rhys's mother and her terrible perfume and clothes. How could he not think of that when he was already thinking about her? Quite an impression for just meeting her for a day.

"In hiding...? Right, let's get the food. Gwen, we've got things mashed up and ready to go for her, and the porridge should be cool enough for a baby by now."
