He put on a pot of coffee and leaned over to inhale the aroma. There was something so nice and comforting about the aroma of a good pot of coffee. He made sure there was tea, too, in case the Doctor preferred that.

"My coffee is to die for." As humble as he was about everything else, Ianto was amazing at coffee and he knew it. "But there is tea." He went to the stove to set the kettle on.

"I hope you mean that metaphorically," the Doctor said with a worried expression that cleared as soon as the tea kettle was set to boil. "I never quite know with Torchwood. I never quite know with Jack."

"Of course I do!" He turned to look at the Doctor, not-quite-glaring. "I don't know where you've been, Doctor, but Torchwood is different. Jack is different. We love you. We would never hurt you."

"No no no!" The Doctor took a step back, waving his hands in the air. "I didn't mean that. I know Jack's Torchwood is different. Your Torchwood is different. I just meant that accidents have a tendency to follow people like us around. How should I know if the fate of the universe didn't depend on the quality of your coffee on any given Friday?"

"It doesn't matter if it does. My coffee it perfect. Every day."

"Never said it wasn't," the Doctor soothed, "but I bet there's an alien race out there somewhere who can only be turned away from invading Earth by a brilliant brew. We probably just haven't tripped over them, yet."

"Well, if we ever find them, I am more than ready to defend my home planet."

"Clearly." The Doctor began rummaging in the cabinets, looking for something to munch on along with the tea, and not really minding that he was helping himself to someone else's groceries. First, Rose and Jack--and, he hoped, Ianto--would understand, and second, he was rude in this incarnation. This was certainly a far cry better than that time he'd started eating a stranger's marmalade with his fingers without so much as asking her if she had anything in the house to eat.

"Would you like some biscuits, or toast, or something? Maybe a sandwich?" It was better to just offer something than comment on his behaviour. Less awkward.

"No need to trouble yourself," he assured Ianto as he finally found a package of jammie dodgers. He grinned as he waved them in the air in triumph. "I love nibbles."

"Clearly. To both." He turned to the stove as the kettle started to whistle. "I've only got teabags; I hope that's all right."

"Of course it is. Can't be worse than Jackie's tea." He was teasing ... mostly. Jackie made a decent cuppa, and her tea had saved his life, once. "So, Ianto Jones, what do you think of our little city here?"

"Haven't seen much of it. But I'd rather be in Cardiff. I mean, some omnipotent sicko drags us here for his own amusement and then leaves us to the whims of an arrogant megalomaniac? Even the Rift isn't that bad."

The Doctor shrugged as he retrieved a plate and set out the biscuits into neat little rows. "Maybe, but from what I've seen so far, there's significantly less dying here than there is in Cardiff."

"That...that alien mayor damaged the Rift. It would never be this bad normally. Don't blame Cardiff. It hasn't done a thing."

"It was there before Margaret, you know. Opened up in the late eighteen hundreds. A servant girl closed it. Gwyneth."

"Right. Closed it! It should have stayed closed!"
