Dorian the peacock strutted up and down the ledge of the retaining wall on the roof. His feathers reflecting the last light of day, gold and orange on blue, green and purple. He didn’t wander too far away from Regulus before he turned around and bobbed his way back. Every time the bird did Regulus dropped another seed on the stone and Dorian would peck at it furiously. Occasionally Dorian would spread his feathers, stretch his wings and everything was rainbows in that circle the bird claimed. But they would ruffle for only a moment then lie flat again, reminding Regulus that peacocks did that for peahens, and Dorian wouldn’t ever have one of those. It almost made him regret shrinking the bird.
But then when he thought about it more, he remembered if he’d not Dorian would have gone the way of the rest of the animals in the zoo last Christmas, and he wouldn’t have this last remembrance of Juno.
He was better about that now, more than a month gone and he didn’t feel like he was drowning in nothing anymore. And he did more than stay in bed, or lie on the sofa all day. More than occasionally he went out, like now. He’d taken up training Dorian, like now. Though most of his free time he spent alone, like now. The bird didn’t count.
Dorian pecked at his hand and Regulus tossed some seed back onto the floor of the roof. The bird hopped down and chased after the scattered food. Regulus turned to watch the darting blue feathers, taking the moment of calm to fish his cigarettes out of his pocket. He also wasn’t smoking as much as before, which actually meant a great deal when it came to assessing his current mental stability. It was a habit he took to when everything felt wrong. Things were starting to feel less wrong now. All the same, he still pulled on out and lit it, he would ever be completely stable would he?
The door to the roof opened, rusty hinges complaining, and Regulus lifted his head to catch sight of who it might be, to determine if he would gather up Dorian and leave or stick around for the company – occasionally he accepted the company of others.
