WHO: PoA!Sirius Black and Lily Potter
WHAT: Lily suddenly has two people she needs to look after. And only one's a baby.
WHERE: Potters' flat.
WHEN: This afternoon.
RATING: TBD.
PROGRESS: In Progress

Sirius hadn't known where he was when he first woke up. It had taken a moment for him to get his bearings, to realise he hadn't just broken into some strange muggle's house and to remember the events of the day before. He vaguely remembered being shown a baby that was Harry but wasn't Harry, and James (James!) showing him into the spare room, but it was all confusing and blurry. He remembered falling asleep in the bed in the spare room, only to wake up as Padfoot, curled on the hard floor. He had some fuzzy recollection waking up at some point in the night screaming, and having to bite down hard on his fist in an effort not to wake the rest of the flat. Then there had been the baby crying at one point, which had sent him back to that night and Harry with the open wound on his forehead...

Sirius transformed back into himself reluctantly. A clock on the bedside table told him he had slept for nearly 21 hours, and it was nearly mid-afternoon. Taking a deep breath, Sirius used the edge of the bed to pull his bony, aching body to his feet and looked down at the way the borrowed clothes hung off his wasted frame. You could see the line of his ribs, the ridge of his collarbone like a piece of metal. His skin wasn't as dirty as it had been, but at least the dirt had covered off the markings they had etched into his skin. There was a number printed in black ink just above his heart. Sirius rubbed at it hopelessly, then took a deep breath and took a few painful, jolting steps to open the bedroom door and peer out into the main room.

Lily had never really realised how much she bloody loved Sirius until she saw his broken form when James brought him in. All she wanted to do was mother the hell out of him until he was happy and healthy and as safe as possible, but she knew he had to sleep. He looked like he hadn't slept in years, and if the screaming during the night meant anything then she wouldn't be surprised that he hadn't slept. Merlin knows what he saw in that place. But when the screaming had settled, and Luke had went to sleep, she couldn't help but go in and found Padfoot curled up on the floor. She had just sat and ran her hands over his back for a little while before finally going back to sleep, she couldn't leave him until she did that.

Speaking of Sirius, she heard movement in the other room. She had food on, just ready for him, all she had to do was wait anyway. He had been sleeping for so long he was bound to be hungry. And if he took a while then she would just reheat or make it fresh. Luke was sleeping soundly his cot and as she heard the door opened, she wiped her hands on her loose jogging trousers and left the kitchen.

"Morning," she said softly, giving him a gentle smile. "Or afternoon. I've got food on."

Sirius stood awkwardly in the doorway, one hand curled tightly around the frame so his knuckles bulged white from his papery skin. The world seemed to tip uncomfortably beneath him. He didn't know what to do, which was a far cry from the self-confident, easy swagger from the young man he's once been. But it was Lily. Lily Potter, strolling out of the kitchen like she'd never left. Like nothing had ever happened.

He almost didn't want to move, in case she vanished again. In case it all vanished again.

But he was hungry.

Sirius didn't say anything, but he took a deep breath (It seemed to rattle unnaturally loud down into his lungs.) and stepped forward to follow her back into the kitchen. Sirius sank down into one of the chairs around the table, pulling the sleeves of the baggy jumper down over his shaking hands.

She had noticed that. The aspects of nervousness and being scared and she felt her heart bleed more for him. He had gone through all of this for a stupid reason. He was innocent, completely innocent, and she knew that no matter what. If people had said to her that he was accused of telling Voldemort of where they were she'd had laughed. Sirius was one of the most loyal and stubborn men on this Earth and no matter what he would never put them at risk.

"Here," she said as she placed a plate in front of him once she had put everything on it. A full fry up, made exactly the way she knew he liked it. She smiled softly at him as she reached out to run her knuckles over his cheek. "If you want anything else just let me know. Plenty there and I can go get it if we don't have it in."

She had to keep him happy, and she wanted him to eat a little more. He was far too thin.

Sirius looked down at the plate placed in front of him and felt his stomach lurch with something torn between need and aversion. He was desperate for food - real, proper food that someone had cooked with more than two seconds worth of attention. But after twelve years of the crap they served in Azkaban - just enough to keep people alive, and nothing more - and weeks of eating scraps out of bins and whatever Padfoot could catch once he escaped, he wasn't sure if his stomach could take it. He wanted to eat, but Sirius' body had stopped doing what he wanted it to years ago.

Then there was a gentle touch against his cheek and Sirius started, surprised once again by the easy human contact. He rather wanted to cry, but he couldn't do that any more. It had been months before he'd allowed himself to cry in that place, after what had happened to his friends, and even then he'd done it with his teeth biting down on his arm rather than let any of the other prisoners hear him.

"Lily." It came out as a harsh, painful croak, catching in his throat, and Sirius' hand flew up to grab hers. He stared at her for a moment, struggling to find the words. His tongue swept out to dampen dry and cracked lips. "I'm so sorry."

She had just been about to move to get him something to drink when she heard her name leave his lips and his hand grasp hers. She stopped moving that moment, bright green eyes looking straight into his. Merlin how broken he looked, and it wasn't just his body. Eyes are the window to the soul, they say, and by looking at his she could see his had long been about destroyed.

"No," she said sharply as she knelt down so their faces were level. "No don't you dare, you have nothing to apologise for, Sirius. Nothing. You didn't know Peter was going to do that and you didn't force us to pick him. You were as betrayed as we were, and I'm just sorry you were blamed for it all. I know you'd have never done that, you know I know that."

She entwined his bony fingers with her own, squeezing his hand softly. God how much she hoped she would remember this when she got back and she could make sure they changed it from Peter. Why hadn't they even taken Dumbledore up on the offer, she knew he had offered to be their secret keeper.

"I love you, Padfoot. And when I leave this place I'll do everything I can to make sure this doesn't happen to you."

How much she hoped she could.

Sirius stared at her for a long moment, and then nodded. Perhaps it was stupid. He'd barely got his head around this place, still couldn't quite believe it. But he didn't want to examine it too closely in case it dissolved into nothing and turned out to be a product of his finally broken mind. He could be hallucinating in a ditch in the rain for all he knew, and it was a mark of where Sirius' life had gone that he didn't much care.

But Lily hadn't remembered, a voice said bitterly in his head, it had happened, and he'd spent twelve years sat on his own in the cold and the dark, reliving the worst moments of his life in his head. And James and Lily were dead and Harry and Remus were gone, and it was all Peter's fault.

But then again Lily was here, and she seemed so solid and beautiful and worried that he could barely stand it. Sirius' lips twitched hopelessly into a smile that seemed to sit uncomfortably on his gaunt features. "You're only saying that because you can't stand how they've ruined my dark good looks," he quipped hoarsely. But his hand gripped hers tightly and gave it what he hoped was a reassuring squeeze.

She couldn't help the delighted laugh that left her lips as he spoke, her eyes lighting up. It felt like she had gotten through to him in a way, that she had broken down some of those protective walls, simply because he had spoke as she was use to. She squeezed his hand as she grinned at him but then she gave in.

"Oh come here," she muttered as she let his hand go and wrapped her arms around his thin frame, pulling him close. Her face pressed in close and she didn't care about some of the things that had been caused by so many years in prison, like the amount of dirt, because she could wash all of that off. All she cared about was holding him.

"Don't let it go to your head but you're still bloody gorgeous," she said as she held on a little tighter.
