WHO: Hugo Weasley and Sherlock Holmes
WHAT: Sherlock has become the reluctant babysitter
WHERE: Hermione, John and Sherlock's apartment
WHEN: Sunday Afternoon
PROGRESS: In Progress

Hugo had spent the last two days with his mother and the man, who was not his father, that she was married to as well as their friend Sherlock. Even at six Hugo had already read Sherlock Holmes so he was familar with both him and the man that his mother was married to; even if they were somewhat different than the ones in the books. Hugo didn't like the fact that his father wasn't there and that his parents weren't together, but he didn't want to risk his mother sending him back to live with Uncle Charlie or someone else if he said something wrong, so he'd done his best to be nice to John and Sherlock, but had spent most of the last two days keeping to himself and playing with Crookshanks and the kitten.

He'd also spent a lot of time staring at the bookshelves, wondering what sort of books they held, but he didn't dare touch any of them because he didn't know if John or Sherlock would yell at him. This wasn't his house after all and the books didn't belong to him. Sure, he could have asked to read them, but he didn't know either of the men and didn't know if they'd let him. Of course when no one was looking, Hugo had approached the bookshelves to read the titles, his curiousity getting the better of him, but still not touching anything.

There had been many times that Sherlock had hated the fact that John worked all day long, and while he'd never really had an issue with Hermione's career, there was something very awkward about being left alone in the apartment with a child rather than just a couple of cats. His own book in hand, Sherlock couldn't help but spare a glance over at Hugo every so often trying to gauge exactly what the child was doing. It didn't take a genius to see that he found the whole situation incredibly awkward and was trying not to show it. He'd been nice to them, polite, but it was still the distance of a child who wasn't quite sure how to react to the two strange adult men living with his Mommy.

Sherlock's attention shifted back on his book, but he wasn't able to completely pay attention to what was in front of him with the same rapture that he usually did. His gaze kept returning to the boy lingering by the bookshelves without actually moving to take one of them. He was quite young, and it was possible that his curiosity was nothing more than that. But it was still rather distracting to just have him sitting there.

"They do have words on the inside, you realize," Sherlock drawled, quirking an eyebrow at the young boy. "Much more interesting if you actually open one of them."

Despite knowing that Sherlock was in the apartment, Hugo hadn't realized that the man was watching him until he spoke, causing the boy to jump slightly before glancing over to see where he was. "I...You mean I can read one?" Not wanting to make too much noise, his voice remained low as he asked the question.

Sure, Sherlock had more or less just told him to read one, but he needed to make sure before he took one down. After all, the man was still a stranger and he didn't want to make him mad, because he didn't know if he would tell Hermione that Hugo had to leave. Hugo had been tricked by his older cousins plenty of times already by being told to touch something that inevitably wound up getting him in trouble that he was rather wary sometimes.

Whatever reasons Sherlock had unconsciously ascribed to Hugo's behavior, the question still came as a bit of a surprise, the man quirking an eyebrow at the young boy as he leveled him with a searching gaze. After allowing a long silence to pass between the two of them, Sherlock shifted his gaze to the bookcase before allowing a slight smile to crack his otherwise stern features, "Well, they're not there for decoration," He said, a slight chuckle echoing out of the back of his throat. "There's no way you can wear them down anymore than I have so stop worrying."

As a boy himself, Sherlock had more than experience the joys of having to deal with other children his own age when their attentions were focused on dirt and sports and trying to kill each other when all he wanted to do was read a good book. There was a certain relief in Hugo's quiet disposition, and Sherlock had to feel a little bad that the boy hadn't had the courage to speak up earlier.

"You really don't need to ask permission to use anything in the flat, you know," Sherlock felt he really should take it upon himself to clarify the situation.

As the silence lingered, Hugo began to think that Sherlock would say no and he was about to step away from the bookshelf to find Crookshanks again when the older man replied, Hugo's face lighting up a little at the answer, "Thank you, Mr. Holmes." He wasn't quite sure what he wanted to read first, but there were a few books that he recognized from Uncle Percy's bookshelves at home that Hugo had read before and he took one of those first.

Book in hand, Hugo carried it carefully to the couch and sat down, his feet dangling off the edge seeing as how he didn't quite possess the Weasley height yet that he would when he was older. For the next few minutes, Hugo read quietly, but after about three chapters, he began glancing up at Sherlock every couple of minutes before he finally spoke, "What're you reading?"
