Who: Lily and Sirius
What: Making up
Where: Streets
When: Sunday Afternoon
Rating: TBD
Status: In progress.

Lily knew how Sundays could be so it made sense to go and spend the little she had saved away so far. She still needed a lot of essentials for the baby, and she only had just under two months left. They were lucky enough that a cot had already been bought, and Lily had found a little moses basket for cheap and had that set up in the bedroom for the initial few weeks until he could be put in the cot. They had some clothes, and plenty of blankets and bottles. Not that they would need bottles, she was determined to feed the baby by herself but she also knew she would then have the option to allow James the chance to feed and give her a break eventually. And she had a feeling James would really like to get the chance to bond that way.

She had managed to buy some more clothing essentials; vests and scratch mittens, since you could never have enough of those, as well as little outfits. Lily was good at spotting a bargain, so could manage to get the clothing she needed for a rather cheap price. She wanted to try and get as many clothes and other things that were light as possible, which was how she managed in her current situation. One hand had about three bags full of clothes in it's grasp whilst the other had two bags, one with a box of nappies to put away and the other with things she would need for after the baby. It was murder, but she would manage. She knew she could just use her wand but she hated doing that in a muggle environment. It just didn't seem a nice thing to do.

"You did, that's the thing."

She knew that was his attempt at an apology and she wasn't so willing to accept it. She hated that he found a way around saying sorry and she usually told it it was okay, not to worry. But what he had said hurt her a lot. More than most of their arguments really did and it was probably why she reacted so strongly. She loved James and to imply that she used him to chase after her was so wrong. She would do the same thing if James was in the position she was at times, do what she could to help him, because that is what love contains.

"I know you Sirius, well enough to know when you mean something and when you don't."

Sirius raised his eyebrows, but didn't say anything. As far as he was concerned, the only person who knew him properly had always been James. The pair had been attached at the hip since they were eleven, after all, and had the uncanny ability to have silent conversations across a crowded classroom or Order meeting with just the twitching of an eyebrow or a scratch of the nose. They'd been inseperable for a very long time, and although she hadn't meant to, Lily's arrival had upset that happy balance. He wanted James to be happy, of course he did. And he had, quite frankly, been sick of his best mate moping after the redhead. But there had always been that selfish little part of Sirius that had wanted him all to himself, who hadn't liked the change in James' priorities. Hogwarts had been the happiest time of his life, and was it so wrong to want to try and preserve that?

Not that he'd ever say any of this to the pregnant woman currently walking infuriatingly slowly beside him.

"Maybe in the moment," he finally replied, stubbornly avoiding looking at her all of a sudden. "But I was angry, and you know what I get like. I was just... I was thinking about me. Not you."

'And you said things too', was the end of that sentence, but again Sirius didn't voice it, although his fingers tightened around the bags until they started to cut into his palm, creating angry red welts against his skin.

"Maybe in the moment you admitted it, the anger you suddenly had only made it easier for you to say. But it still feels like you genuinely meant it."

When she heard it in her mind again and again it really did sound like he had wanted to say this for quite some time and had just used the chance while he had it to tell her the truth. It was an easy time to just blame his temper, and it wouldn't surprise her if he decided to just agree and say it was the heat of the moment. And according to him that was exactly what he was admitting to, but Lily still didn't believe him.

Sirius exhaled a great breath, letting his head roll back to give the sky a resigned look. Honestly, what was with girls? Why did they have to read so much into everything? Why couldn't they just take things as face value, have a casual fight and then forget it? Why did they let things stew?

"Look," he tried again. "I said some shit things, and I'm... you know. And you weren't exactly sunshine and light. Can't we just agree we were both a bit out of order and move on?" He hesitated, then groaned again, swinging the bags at his side awkwardly. It was honestly only a matter of time before he caused a major pedestrian/shopping-based accident. But then people should watch where they were going, he thought vaguely.

"Lily, this is stupid. We argue all the time. You know I'm trying." And he was. Trying to adapt to the new pecking order within the group - James and Lily, him and Remus - the changes in their lifestyles.

Okay some of the things she had said weren't nice, he was right about that. Sighing she rested her hand over her stomach where the baby had started kicking at her again, eyes dropping to the swell as she listened to him talk. She knew they would move on from this, they always did, and she couldn't keep James torn the way he was. Sirius was his brother in everything but blood, and she was his wife. She hoped if it ever came down to it he would choose her but she didn't want that to happen.

"You've been trying since I started dating James and little has changed."

They both knew that, and it was something they didn't really talk about. She wanted more time with her husband and he wanted more time with his best friend, and she was the outsider. She came in and disturbed the peace the boys had.

"Yes it has!" Sirius actually managed to look offended. "It's changed loads. I never hex you now. And you only sometimes throw stuff at me. And even that's hardly ever anything heavy." He risked a grin then, nudging her gently in the arm with a pointy elbow. Sirius liked things like this to be cleared up quickly. Like he'd said, if this had been a bloke they'd probably have thrown a few punches and it'd all be done and dusted in time for tea. But he wasn't good at the big emotional chats. That was why he'd glossed over how that thing Lily had said had managed to hit a painful nerve, or dug too far into his own reasons for saying what he'd said.

"Pleeeease, Lils?" he weedled, giving her his best puppy-dog eyes. "I'll buy you fruit. I'll buy you a fucking greengrocers if you want."

"Stop it," she said as she hit his arm in response to the nudge. She hated when he did that to her. He knew of the ways to break her down and stop her being angry at him and it annoyed her so much. He was too good at that, and probably knew it all from James. Those little actions and looks to give her that would make her forgive him in the end. And Sirius had put these to practice far too many times.

And out came the eyes. She tried to act like it didn't work but at times it did. Especially with the words accompanying the look this time. Groaning in frustration she shoved him before looking away.

"I hate you so much!"

He knew he'd won. He always did. Sirius Black had been taught to be charming and well-spoken (When the situation called for it.) since he practically couldn't talk at all. He was an expert at getting his own way. And now he turned huge, hopeful dark eyes in her direction and shook his hair back with a small, slightly crooked smile.

"No, you don't," he reminded her. "I'm your favourite arrogant pig, remember?" She shoved him, and Sirius gave a low chuckle as he bounced down off the kurb and into the gutter. He wandered along there for a moment, leaving a bit of space between them, before finally jumping back to walk beside her as a car whizzed past.

"I made something for the sprog," he offered. "Well, I actually made if when you were in Godric's Hollow, but I made it again. It's a mobile for over the crib." It was a pretty thing, actually. It looked more like suspended golden lights, crafted into the shapes of snitches and brooms and lilies and stags, dancing around each other. Technically, the spell had started off as the same jinx that had written swear words and insults in the air to follow people around, but Sirius had tweaked it to make it a bit more family-friendly.

"I do. I genuinely hate you more than anything in this place."

She laughed softly, shaking her head at him. She had to become stronger to his charms. She was a bit stronger when it came to James just not as good at stopping herself as she would like to be. The men knew her weaknesses and they played on that. Annoying buggers.

And now Sirius had to go and be sweet. Giving him a smile, she couldn't stop herself as she kissed his cheek before messing his hair up. She knew he hated that but she was one of the few that wouldn't get screamed at for doing so.

"Thank you."

Sirius scowled and ducked out the way after the kiss on the cheek to try and rescue his hair. Bloody hell. He was sure his friends had some secret mission to have him looking like a fucking walking dandelion with his fluffy hair.

"Watch it," he grumbled, shifting the shopping bags onto one arm to free up one hand. Sirius lifted his suddenly empty fingers to shift through his hair, trying to flatten the long dark hair with a scowl. "I'll look like your bloody husband if you have your way. And no'one wants that."

Still, he was glad they were normal again. Or at least heading towards it. He'd hated not talking to Lily, and not just because he missed the ease of which he could chat to James. Of course, he'd always make it up with Lily just because he didn't want to get his best mate stuck between them, but there were other reasons as well. He missed her, and her horrendously insulting teasing.

"Merlin no. I'd hate to be attracted to you."

To some their sudden friendliness would be strange and unexpected but this was the norm for them. One minute they would be wanting to kill each other and the next they'd be laughing away. It was just how they were, mostly because of the clash that came with them. They were too different, and yet similar at times. They both had a temper, that was certain. Laughing softly, she rubbed at her stomach as the baby kicked hard.

"That really would be hell on earth."

"Why?" Sirius shot her his usual, mischievious grin. The one that was slightly crooked and had melted the hearts of almost all of Lily's friends when they were at school all those years ago. "Because you know you couldn't have me? You'd have to join the ranks of weeping people waiting for me and my delectable arse to come back on the market."

He smirked wickedly, swinging the bags back over so they were balanced between his hands. He sniffed a little, his nose twitching. "You know, if you weren't knocked up we could just take the bike home. We'd be there by now. Probably would have had a cup of tea and everything."

"Because I wouldn't want you. I weep for joy that you're not on the market."

Okay so she knew Sirius was a good looking man, she wasn't blind. She had just been one of the few who never fell for it all. Didn't fall for the charm and the lines. But of course she knew that Sirius never wanted her like that purely because he would never cross the line of taking the girl his best mate fancied. She had to admire him a little for that loyalty.

"Go get your bike yourself then, you didn't have to walk with me."
