WHO: Fiona, Tessa and Ukitake
WHAT: Friday the 13th causes the captain of 13th Division some medical woes. Tessa and Fiona are there to help him out.
WHEN: May 13th, daytime
WHERE: Apartment 301D
RATING: Medium for tuberculosis-like illness
STATUS: In progress

Perhaps it had been the dust at the bomb site, or perhaps the stress of performing konso under less-than-ideal conditions, or perhaps it was sheer bad luck that had landed Jyuushiro Ukitake in bed with a debilitating cough that morning. He'd been woken by a faint pain in his chest shortly after midnight, and though he'd managed a fitful few hours of sleep more, he'd been exhausted by breakfast and forced to lie back down by midmorning. He had hoped that rest would be sufficient cure, as he disliked the idea of calling on the healers in Colligo so soon after the attack on the clinic. There were others in the city who had more need of them.

By noon, Ukitake was forced to admit that rest would not be enough to carry him through the day. He was growing short of breath, and the chills that wracked his spare frame told him he was developing a fever. All of the signs and symptoms indicated the onset of a severe episode. Far away from Soul Society and the experienced hands of Captain Unohana, Ukitake knew he could ill afford to ignore the warnings. He took a chance, and posted an inquiry to the network. He was grateful beyond measure for the response, though he feared his exhaustion kept him from adequately conveying his thanks.

Ukitake was all too glad to heed Tessa's advice once a healer had been found, and simply rest until assistance arrived.

Well at least she was not asking to take over Fiona's mind. Near possession was something that Fiona only wanted to go through once in her life. Whatever this woman was, if it was a woman at all, that was not why Fiona was here. She needed to focus on the task at hand. Still it was nearly impossible to deny her own curiosity. Sometimes Fiona wondered if that was a trait that was part of being a mage, since they were so close to the fade and unexplained anyway.

She followed Tessa, though once she reached the door she pushed it open, going to the bedside of her, well, patient. Frowning, she looked over him. Coughing up blood, that was never good. Fiona registered what Tessa was saying but focused more on the task at hand. This was a lot different from what she was used to, usually people were bleeding on the outside for one.

"All right, try to stay still." Fiona said carefully, reaching her hands out and holding them over his chest. She focused back on what her teachers back at the circle had gone over with her when she was still being trained in healing.

A soft blue glow of magic spread from her hands to his chest, searching out and attempting to repair what she could. It was not a cure by any means, but soothing and fixing what she could, if it could even be called fixing. "You're probably going to have to cough up excess, just a warning."

Ukitake's reiatsu reacted instantly to the foreign energy that had been focused on him. He focused as best he could on what the healer was saying while he reined his own power in to prevent a defensive backlash against her. As she worked, the pressure in his chest became worse though the raw pain of damaged tissue eased. His coughing intensified as his body struggled to expel the excess she'd mentioned, and he was forced to bend forward to avoid choking. The process looked painful and tiring, but it was working.

Tessa stood by, all but fading into the backdround as she felt Fiona's blue magic begin to go to work. This was always the part where she struggled to remain neutral. She was was glad, at least, that she was able to bring him some small comfort, even if she had to leave the healing to those gifted with such skills.

"There we go." Fiona sighed, feeling the drain from the loss of energy. There had been so much healing lately, she was going to have to pass out for a few hours to regain some of her mana. It was not as if this place had piles of lyrium about, though that would be amazing.

When he bent forward, Fiona rested a hand against his back, a soft way of energy focusing in to continue the work, less this time to give him time to cough up the blood that was already in his lungs. "Cough it all out. Better out than in, right?"

"In general," Ukitake rasped once the fit was done and he could breathe well enough to speak again. He was still weak and feverish, but his lungs felt stronger, and that was the important thing. Drawing on the reserves of his spiritual energy for strength, he straightened and wiped his mouth clean with the handkerchief clutched between his fingers. "Thank you for your help."

Seeing--or perhaps sensing--that the process was coming to completion, Tessa stepped quietly out of the room for a moment to pour another cup of tea; this one for Fiona. She returned a moment later, holding the cup as she waited for the mage to have her hands free.

"I've made you some tea if you'd like, Fiona," she said softly, watching the pair. She had no doubt the effort had been taxing on them both. "You're welcome to rest here if need be."

"You're far more compliant than some of my usual... patients." Fiona shrugged as she looked down at him. He was very weak, she did not even need to sense that. But there was only so much that she could do. At least he could talk, that was something right? And he was not about to go leap right back into battle like a grey warden.

Leaning against her staff a bit more now, she looked up at the fade creature, looking down at the cup and then back up at Tessa. "What are you, exactly?" she asked pointedly. Where she was from a fade spirit was not something that could be trusted. Be careful of Orlesians bearing gifts and all. Looking back at her patient she frowned slightly. "There's something about the both of you."

"I'm afraid I've grown used to the routine," Ukitake admitted ruefully in regards to his compliance. He had been under the care of one healer or another for more than two thousand years because of his illness. Calm obedience and the help of his warders were at times the only reasons he had survived.

"I'm a Soul Reaper," he informed the healer in a quiet, worn voice. "Jyuushiro Ukitake, Captain of the Thirteenth Division."

"I am also a Reaper," Tessa replied, matter of factly. She was quite used to people seeing or sensing her true nature and mistrusting her, after all. "I apologize if we have...alarmed you."

A reaper? That was not a concept that made any sense to her. Then again before she had come here she had never heard of a creature that fed off blood outside of the crazier blood mages. So far they had not made any motion that could be considered threatening and one of them was half dead, with lungs that were possibly in worse shape than she had ever seen.

"I don't know what that is." Fiona admitted slowly, standing up a bit straighter. "You're fade spirits, yes? Or at least something like that?"

"A reaper guides the souls of the dead," Ukitake supplied, though he was quickly growing too tired to focus on the conversation. He laid back against the pillows, relieved that once he did he could still comfortably draw breathe.

"...from this world to the next," Tessa finished, still holding the tea. Smiling encouragingly at her fellow reaper as he lay down to rest. "We exist in the realm between realms, yes," she said, "But you have nothing to fear from us."

Though she knew first hand that there were other spirits in that realm who would not hesiste to strike out at the living--and even at a neutral being such as herself. "I'd be happy to answer as many of your questions as I am at liberty to answer, but we sould let my friend get some sleep."

Spirits said a lot of pretty things. While Fiona was not afraid she was cautious. Her possession in the Deep Roads was not something that she ever wanted to relive, and here there was no idiot King Maric to save her from herself. So cautious was the way to go.

"He'll have to tell me if this is a regular thing after he's rested up." Fiona stated, carefully stepping around the previous topic for a moment. "I'm not by default a healer but we could maybe set something up if need by." Even if they were fade spirits she was hardly going to let one of them suffer. It was not like they were Darkspawn.

"Since he was a youth, I'm told," Tessa replied, withdrawing from the room, and gesturing for the mage to follow. "How often, I'm not sure, but I suppose it depends on how much stress he places himself under. He has a persistent, lingering cough, but this is the first attack he's had since he arrived, a week or two ago."

There was an unease to doing what a spirit asked but she did need to leave him to rest. Still there was a part of Fiona that wanted to stay half out of concern to watch and make sure he was already and half out of petulance. Still he was in no shape for the latter so she made her way out of the room.

"I'm not that sort of healer, usually." Fiona commented, keeping a close eye on Tessa. "More wounds and broken bones, that sort of thing. My son had a friend who was better at it."

"I understand," Tessa said, "But you were the first person to respond, and we are grateful." She bowed her head at the use of the past tense--easily able to guess whom she was referring to. "I am sorry. You must be tired, after everything."
