Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:donna noble, jack harkness, river song, rose tyler, the doctor (10)

Who: OPEN to Whoniverse people and Sam Tyler
What: A day trip and a picnic outside the city.
Where: Outside Colligo - starting on the edge of the beach.
When: Lunchtime/Afternoon on the 25th.
Rating: TBD. Probably lowish.
Status: In Progress.

For some reason, the journey through the barrier was a lot easier this time around. Of course, technically, the TARDIS was built to be piloted by a group of people, but the Doctor had been flying it perfectly well for centuries. Ish. Perhaps she was just glad to see everyone back again and hadn't kicked up as much of a fuss. Whatever the reason, the Doctor had bounded around the console like a man posessed, pulling on things and turning switches and accidentally pulling a few vividly coloured wires loose, but that was fine because she still flew like a dream and everyone was looking on like he really was very clever. So it wasn't long before they landed on the slope of the rolling green hill he and Donna had visited before.

The beach was a stones throw away, the green grass merging into white sand and, beyond that, an ocean that sparkled and glinted sapphire under the sun. The same sunlight, in fact, that bounded off K-9's casing as he trundled off to take soil samples. The Doctor had flung the doors of the TARDIS open to let her get some fresh air, and the picnic (Because who visited a place like this without a picnic? Honestly. Some people...) was spread out on the grass. No pears, of course. Pears were banned.

For his part, the Doctor was a little way away, crouched down on the edge of the water. If he turned back and squinted, he could make out the rest of the group, and the familiar, endless blue of the TARDIS. He'd lost his jacket at some point, and his tie kept being caught in the salt water that inched up the beach with every wave. But that didn't matter because he was busy poking his elbow in, shirt sleeve rolled up to reveal a skinny, slightly freckled forearm, testing the temperature of the water.

It was warmer than the average temperature of the oceans on Earth. Closer to Clom, really. He stuck his forefinger into the water next, quickly transferring it into his mouth to get a taste. Sodium chloride. Obviously. It was salt water. But there was something else in there too.. The Doctor licked his lips thoughtfully, caught up in his own tumbling thoughts.

Rose had been quiet the entire trip, sitting on the control chair and simply watching the other people in the TARDIS and conversing with anyone who wanted to talk to her. If she was honest, she mostly came to keep Lucy company though now she wasn't feeling too much like being part of the group, though she kept acting social. However after some time, when the Doctor was long gone, she stood and excused herself.

"I'm just going to have a look around."

That was all she had told them. Part of her wanted to go talk to the Doctor, but she didn't really want to just yet. So instead she found a part of the sand away from him to sit on, looking out at the ocean as the waves moved slowly. At the sound of movement near her she almost sighed but the noise that came to her was not from any human here.

"You're a good dog, K9," she said softly as she pressed a hand to the robot beside her. "Why don't you go see Sarah Jane? I am sure you have missed her."

The dog did not move for another few minutes, but when Rose insisted again he trundled off back to the group.

The Doctor finished off drinking sea water, rocking back to rest on his heels, pressing his lips together thoughtfully as he looked back around him. A flash of blonde caught his eye. Rose was sat a little distance away, K-9 trundling in the other direction as she sat staring out over the waves rolling into the distance. She was still mad at him, although despite River's helpful interjections the actual reason for her current mood escaped him. The Doctor could recite pi to a hundred thousand digits, knew every element on Earth and beyond - known and unknown - but Rose Tyler (And most women, actually) was a complete mystery to him. They were just... illogical.

With a sigh, the Doctor pulled himself to his feet, leaving one sleeve rolled up and letting the other hang down over his wrist, his tie loose around his neck. Striding across the stand, the Time Lord came to stand next to Rose, finally settling down beside her on the edge of the water. There was a moment in silence, broken by the waves on the beach and the distant sound of people talking over by the TARDIS.

"Soooooo...." The Doctor dragged out the syllable thoughtfully, clicking his tongue absently against the roof of his mouth. But there had been such a long, awkward bit of quiet, and the Doctor was rubbish at quiet on good days. "What do you think?"

She could see the Doctor getting cloesr but didn't look at his face. In fact, when he was standing next to her she only looked back out at the waves more. For quite a while they sat in silence, and she knew she wasn't going to break it. She was the first to admit that she was a stubborn cow all the time. Especially when it came to the Doctor, even more so during an argument.

When he started to speak she continued to look away, silence taking place once more. Shaking the hair from her face, letting it blow back behind her before she considered his question. If she ignored the chattering behind them she could pretend they were travelling again, seeing new things and enjoying the time together.

"It's gorgeous. Not as beautiful as Women Wept, of course."

For the majority of the flight aboard the TARDIS, River had spent her time, well, undoing most of the things the Doctor was busy doing. She did it subtly, if only to avoid causing him too much public embarrassment and hopefully avoid any pesky questions as to how she knew what she did, but she couldn't help but smile in faint bemusement whenever he would flip a switch that was certain to slow their trip down while announcing how wonderfully it all was going.

They did make it, though, as she'd known they would. Without the brakes on, in fact. And once they'd arrived, River was one of the first few off of the ship. Instantly she'd headed in a different direction than the Doctor. She might need to keep an eye on him in most situations but exploring a new, unfamiliar landscape was certainly not one of them. Besides which, River had yet to even meet Ten properly before arriving in the city and, truth be told, she was still trying to sort out the differences between himself and his next regeneration. Because there were definitely differences.

Pushing the thoughts aside, River crouched down next to a small formation of rocks and boulders just on the other side of the TARDIS. She'd managed to piece together enough equipment from the ship to take proper samples and readings and set to work doing just that. There was a smile on her face - the sort of expression only worn by someone who most definitely found all of this just as exciting as the Time Lord responsible for them all being there - and a light breeze blew some of her curls about as she systematically scraped sample after sample into the various vials.

Pushing aside one of the boulders for a sample of dirt to compare to the other ones K-9 was taking, River hesitated at the sight of a small, worm-like creature that began trying to burrow into the soft earth after being discovered. "Well," she said mildly, "hello there." Using a pair of tweezers, she plucked the creature from the ground and held it up to her eye level.

"Oh, my..." she breathed as she studied the neon coloured markings that lined its tube-shaped form. "Can't say I've ever seen your sort before. Of course, I'm willing to bet you'd say the same for me." Her smile grew as the creature wriggled around a bit more. She sat back on her heels and set the creature down on her bent knee, utterly fascinated as to what it might do and not the least bit concerned at any harm it might bring upon herself.

After all, that was part of the fun.

Sarah Jane didn't think that she'd get a chance to be out and about on another planet before. Well not one where there was just exploring. She had a feeling that sooner or later someone would run into something nasty. Then they'd all have to run. But right now, exploring was nice, and it was just what Sarah Jane needed. It wasn't a wonder to her that the Doctor (and Donna apparently) had found a way through the force field. The rest of the planet was turning out to be much more beautiful than the city. The city was falling to pieces it seemed.

As K-9 wheeled towards her, she bent down to give him a pat on the head and tell him that he was a good boy. Then the two started wandering around to make sure no one hurt themselves, and to collect samples. It was there that she spotted River Song, even though she didn't know her at all. She smiled though and wandered next to her. "I don't think we've met. I'm Sarah Jane.." she told River, putting her hand out.

"Find anything interesting?"

River had heard someone approaching, well two someone's really, counting K-9, but she hadn't glanced up from the brightly coloured worm on her knee until the other person had spoken. Smiling as well, she looked over to Sarah Jane and shook her hand.

"River Song," she introduced herself, although she thought there was likely a good chance that the other woman already knew her name. She hadn't exactly entered the city quietly the day before, after all. Still, manners were important... sometimes. And this was one of those times. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Sarah Jane."

Whether River knew who the woman was or not was really anyone's guess and she certainly wasn't going to confirm or deny it. Being a woman of mystery was not only something she'd done for so long when around the Doctor that she couldn't imagine not doing it but it also was a necessity. Yes, spoilers might not matter much in this place, but River personally wasn't going to risk her own existence by letting slip anything that could possibly get back to the Time Lord. Because if anyone would remember something like that upon returning home, it would certainly be him.

Pushing the thought from her mind for the time being, River nodded down at the worm. "A few rock samples for analyses and him, so far," she said, smiling almost fondly at the neon creature as it wriggled around a bit. She glanced back over to the Doctor's former companion. "Found him under one of the rocks, trying to burrow back into the ground," she explained.

With another look back at the creature, River's tone became thoughtful as she added, "Odd, really, a creature who spends most of his time underground sporting such bright colours. It makes me wonder what else might be right below us without us any the wiser..."

Though she had in fact heard about River's rather grand entrance, she didn't know her past that. Well, it was possible that Mr. Smith once upon a time had a file on her, but that was back at home and Sarah certainly hadn't read it. She shook her hand though and smiled. Ever since meeting Jo, she wanted to get to know everyone the Doctor traveled with. They were family, or so she thought.

"Nice to meet you too, River." During this little trip, she planned on meeting everyone that she hadn't met yet. At least because they were stuck together. Might as well say hello, right? Sarah knew full well about the hazards of saying anything about time lines, and she certainly wasn't going to tell the Doctor anything more than saying she ran into his future self. Perhaps Jo would show up, that would be lovely.

She glanced down at the worm, and looked amazed. "Look at the color on that. That's brilliant. And that's a very good question. Perhaps that's how they light their way. Or maybe it blends in. Can you imagine, everything underground being that neon color?"

Now that would be fantastic.

River's entire face lit up at the possibility that everything beneath the surface being such bright, vivid colours. "Oh, that would be splendid!" she exclaimed. "That's brilliant, Sarah Jane. I do hope you're right. It will certainly make up for the tedium of the city, at any rate."

Not to mention how new and exciting it would be. She could only think of a handful of planets, maybe twelve at the most, that could boast such a thing. Still grinning at the thought, she picked up the worm carefully and held it up toward the sun beaming down on them. "I wonder what I should do with you," she murmured softly before finally deciding to put the creature back where it belonged. There would be plenty of time for taking back live specimens later, when she had things properly set up to house them without bringing them to harm if possible.

"So," she said as she dusted off her hands and looked back to Sarah Jane. "Let's see. We've been here around ten minutes, which means the Doctor has likely lost his jacket, already tasted the ocean water, and is most likely trying to sort out exactly how to smooth things over with the lovely Rose by now." She paused a beat, sat back on her heels, then grinned.

"Which means we likely have another hour or so, at the most, before something happens to put us all in dreadful harm and makes us run for our lives," she added as she began sealing up the rock samples she'd collected. With a soft laugh, she smiled at the woman beside her. "Exciting, isn't it?"

"I really hope I'm right too," she agreed with a large smile on her face. Sarah had really missed odd planets where things were so different from Earth. Those were her favorite ones. And she hadn't been on one in a long time. Well not long enough to explore and look around like this at least. She was all for something exciting happening outside of the city now that they were actually outside the city.

The worm was utterly fascinating, and K-9 of course had rolled along to go find out whatever he could find. Picking up samples and storing them on his person, she imagined. She smiled a little, "You know, for a man who likes to pick up women and take them with him most of the time, you'd think he'd be a little better off with making it up to them." Though she wasn't quite sure what the problem was this time.

Now that last part though, that last part made Sarah smile. "I know what you mean. It is exciting. Is it bad that we're all kind of waiting for something bad to happen so we can figure out how to stop it? It's all of us too. We all just.. love it."

The first thing Jack noticed was that, well, it was bloody fantastic to get away. It felt like a small slice of freedom after being stuck in the 'city-proper' for so damned long. Jack rolled his shoulders, content to let others fly the TARDIS (even if he had talked a big talk about doing the driving). In the end, he was happier standing back and looking important while he let others do the work.

Truth be told, Jack was quite a bit out of sorts lately, though he was trying not to let it show too much. It would remain to be seen just how well he was doing.

Upon landing, Jack slipped out of the TARDIS, turning his face up to the sky. The sun felt bloody fantastic on his skin.

Jack Harkness had been cooped up far too long.

Having gotten to help (or assist, as her dad kept putting it) fly the TARDIS, Jenny was in the best mood she'd been in for weeks by the time they arrived at their destination. In fact, as far as she was concerned, the entire experience had been so grand that frankly she would have been fine with simply flying about some more. However she was rather excited to be out of the city and wasn't going to waste a single second.

So as soon as her dad had thrown open the doors and made his way outside, Jenny had followed. She'd stopped a few steps beyond the doors to glance around and take in the sights, blue eyes wide with wonder and an excited smile on her face. Her blond ponytail bounced along merrily as she made her way toward the water, cutting a wide berth around her dad's area of exploring. She adored her father but also wanted to check out things without him right there, watching her every move.

Around the edge of the beach, just beyond a jutting of rocks that overlooked the ocean, Jenny spotted another, smaller body of water that seemed sealed off from the rest. Curiosity drove her forward, directly to the edge. There was a ripple across the surface of the water as some creature - she assumed a fish of some type - dove deeper. Grinning broadly at the thought of their being all sorts of new life to explore just beneath the blue-hued liquid and made a mental note to come back with proper equipment for a good dive sometime.

For now, though, she was simply content to walk along the water's edge with her gaze darting about for a sign of anything of any interest. Mostly, though, she was simply enjoying the opportunity to explore and could scarcely wait to see what other wonders this planet they were stuck on had hidden away.
