Who: Dresden & George.
What: A day in the life of...
When: Saturday AM.
Where: Here and there.
Warnings: George has got quite a mouth on her.

Harry Dresden hadn't gotten to sleep until late--he was working on building a scale model of Colligo on his coffee table, and trying to reconcile himself with the fact that his daughter had blossomed into a teenager overnight. Blossomed. He shuddered to think about the implications of what that might mean over the course of the next week. Hormones? PMS? Boys? Hell's bells. Dresden had practically worried himself to sleep. So he hardly noticed anything amiss at first as he drifted groggily awake again some time the next morning. All he knew was he did not want to be conscious yet.

Great, this was going to be fantastic. "Well then I guess when I gotta go, you can just come with me and whenever I'm done.. we can do whatever you gotta do." And who said she wasn't completely reasonable? Okay, so she wasn't really that much, but she couldn't do much about it.

"George Lass," she commented back. Harry. Right, she could remember that. "Uh yeah. All the time actually. Best part of the day, or some shit." She got up to her feet again and sighed. "You wanna go get some then?"

"Sure," Harry said, disentangling himself from the sheets and standing to his scarecrow-ish height of well over six feet. He opened the closet on his side of the room, knowing it would have his clothes in there, and grabbed the long, black duster.

"I'm not exactly a morning person, so I'm sure as hell gonna at least need some coffee in me. I'll wait in the kitchen if you want to, you know, freshen up, or whatever it is you do."

Well hey, at least this guy seemed to shower and not smell. That was a step up from living with Mason, for sure. "All right, let me just uh, yeah.. whatever." Plus she had to check her post-its and figure out where she was supposed to be this today.

Waiting for him to leave and head into the kitchen, George got herself dressed and ready and picked up the ledger that had all of the information in it. With a sigh and a scribble onto a post-it so she could remember, she headed to the kitchen. "We have to make a stop. I have an early uh.. thing." it still was weird. "We can go now though. I've got about half an hour."

Harry had showered at his own place the night before, so he let George have dibs, because he didn't want to fry her water-heater on the first day. He suspected he'd already made a bad enough first impression.

When she appeared, he stood, and headed over to open the door for her on the way out. A habit of his that would probably annoy her, but hey. Harry was a gentleman. "After you."

Though they were at her place, she wondered if he would need to go and find his stuff. When he opened the door for her, she just kind of looked surprised. Maybe she would have been annoyed, but the truth was that she wasn't used to anyone having manners, especially for her. So she just blinked and headed out the door with him.

"So uh, do you need to go and get your stuff or something? I don't know how the hell this is supposed to work," she asked before hitting the button for the elevator and then left the building. Now she just had to get a couple of streets down. "I really need a frickin car," she muttered under her breath.

With a muttered evocation of "vento servitas," Harry called his staff--or rather his hockey stick--which happened to be sitting by the door. It seemed all the important stuff had managed to come with him. "Got everything I need on me," he assured her as they stepped into the elevator. Harry practically held his breath--and held down a dampening spell around his powers--the whole way down, just to make sure the thing wouldn't stall between floors and make her late. So far, so good.

"Yeah, unless you can find a classic that was built before World War Two or something, you're better off walking, with me around," he muttered back in response to her grumbling about a car. "Modern electronics and I don't exactly get along." And he wasn't about to suggest they get a bicycle built for two.

Huh. So he was some kinda wizard, George guessed. Though he didn't seem to be Harry Potter or anything all grown up. That would just be freaky. She wasn't sure what the hell he was doing, and she probably looked at him like he had three heads when they headed down to the lobby. Maybe it was better to take the stairs or something. She wondered if he just had elevator phobia or something weird like that. Maybe wizards weren't used to elevators.

Then he brought up that he didn't get along with electronics and she kind of nodded her head. "Gotcha. That's.. I'll try and remember that." When he started breaking things in her room. Whatever. There was time for them to get to the little shop before she needed to be there. "That's gotta suck."

Harry wasn't Potter, but he was around somewhere, and Dresden was more than used to being stared at like he had three heads. At least they were dialogging. It beat the awkward silences, even if it would probably earn him a few more sideways looks.

"Yeah, it does," he said, "I can't use a credit card, or a cell phone, and even my Colligo-brand PDA shorts out on me sometimes. The ironic thing is, I was once almost actioned off piece by piece on e-bay. Which would have really sucked."

Though George had read the books, she wasn't into the whole Harry Potter thing. So it was probably better that she had the Dresden version anyway. She didn't mind talking as long as he didn't mind her cursing up a storm. She wasn't always complaining. Just most of the time. That was just how she was.

"Christ, and I thought I was having a shitty time because I'm dead. At least I can use a phone." Her eyebrows went up though at the thought of him being sold on e-bay. "You were almost sold? Like.. you? That's.. fucked up."

Harry figured if you died and woke up as Death's little helper, you had a right to complain, so her grumbling just sort of bounced off him--like pretty much anything else that struck his spell-laced duster. He complained a lot himself, so he didn't have grounds to...well, you know. Complain more.

"Like, my various body parts, yeah," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "Obviously, I managed to escape before the bad guys carved me up."

At least he hadn't told her to shut up. That was what she was most grateful for. "Very very glad I've never had to come across something like that." She couldn't picture reaping some guy who was about to get cut up into tiny pieces. "I did reap a serial killer once.. and all his victims. He killed people on Halloween." She frowned for a second and then went down one of the streets.

Looking at her post-it, she looked around. "This is the spot." It even said 'on the street' so she was just waiting. Finally she spotted a guy riding his bike down the road, not paying much attention. "Hey slow down uh.. Carmen? You're S. Carmen, aren't you?"

The kid in the bike started to slow down, looking a little annoyed. "What's it to you?"

"There are kids running around, fucking be careful."

"Yeah whatever." As he rode past her, George reached out and touched his shoulder, grabbing a hold of his soul and sliding it out of his body.

She turned to Harry. "Now we just wait."

Waiting, and watching while some kid got killed was not going to be easy for Harry. In fact, the thought suddenly made him rather twitchy, and he took a couple of long strides away from George--though he stayed well within the range of their little, gold leashes.

One would think, after working with the CPD on some of the most grotesquely violent, supernatural homicides in Chicago, Harry would be used to death. But he still sometimes got a little queasy. Especially knowing this was one he wasn't going to be able to save. But he bit his tongue.

George didn't want to wait for it anymore than he did. She didn't like to see it, or try and figure it out before it happened. It was just a part of life, all that dying. Though the fact that he was getting away from her, like she had the plague just reinforced the fact that she shouldn't have friends. She shouldn't talk to mortals.

Which probably meant she'd end up all alone. None of the other reapers were here.

The kid on the bike rolled down the road, and then the truck came out of nowhere. One hit and it was over. The kid appeared next to her, though she doubted if Harry could see him. The kid asked her if he was dead, and she nodded. "Yeah, I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry. I'm not."

"You're not?"

"Nah, you kind of don't care much after that happened. It didn't hurt though."

"That's because I took your soul."

"Oh cool, thanks. Now what?"

"Now you go on." She gestured to all of the glowing, shining lights that were in the shape of a bicycle race. She gave a wave as the guy walked into his lights and headed on.

Sticking her hands in her pockets, George frowned. "It's over, we can go."

Harry didn't want to look, but curiosity got the better of him. After the sound of the initial impact, he found himself turning to watch George's conversation with the dead kid--half surprised that he could see it at all. Though, as a wizard, he could see a lot of things that ordinary, 'vanilla' human beings couldn't.

The light show was something to see though, and it made him wonder about his own death--or near death experience. He'd seen a light at the end of a tunnel, and heard what sounded like an approaching freight train, and then bam! He'd woken up in the library. Maybe he'd ask George about the lights sometime, but he really didn't feel like talking about his near death just quite yet.

"Sorry," he said, "I didn't mean to leave you hanging back there, I just figured it was your turf, and you didn't need me throwing myself under the bus for someone who was already as good as dead. Are all your reaps like that? Freak accidents and stuff?"

George hadn't known if he could see, mostly because in her world there were just reapers. She hadn't ever run into any other kind of supernatural types. Maybe she shouldn't have been surprised. Eh, maybe it was better than her looking like a crazy person in front of him. When Harry wandered back over, she shrugged a little. "Guess so. Never taken anyone with me before."

She nodded a little. "Yeah. I'm in .. homicides, suicides and accidents. External Influence division. And technically even if you threw yourself under the bus for him, it wouldn't have mattered. His soul would have withered and died inside of him, and that's just bad."

As they started to walk again, this time towards getting food, she stuck her hands in her pockets. "I tried everything when I first started. My very first was this little girl, she was 6 and on a train by herself and I couldn't do it. Her soul.." she shook her head. "Then I tried just not doing it at all. The guy still died, but with his soul still in his body it could feel everything that was done to it. His autopsy..." she sighed. "I even tried to prevent a guy from dying by telling him this huge story and because I did that, a group of people died who weren't supposed to. It's just bad.. bad."
