Less than two weeks in the city and, already, Mycroft was ridiculously bored. The decision to toss his name into the hat for the upcoming election for Mayor was, in fact, a direct result of that boredom. He frankly had no real desire to actually maintain the position; he could just as easily run things without being in quite such a public area as that. However it was certain to give him something to focus on, at least for a short while, and did have potential. Perhaps he could learn a bit more about the city in general, even. It certainly was a possibility.

So he made his way to City Hall with the intention of signing up, as it were. To date, no one had ever made a real running against the man currently in charge. However Mycroft was nothing if not thorough and had already gone over enough conversations on the public network to know that at least one other non-local might be making his presence known as well. Personally, Mycroft was looking forward to meeting this Peter Fleming. He was curious to see just what ideas Fleming had in mind for the city they were forced to cohabit, a part of him appreciating a challenge while another part of him wondered if it would be best to set any potential differences aside and work together.

For now, though, Mycroft would settle for simply meeting him. The man was an unknown... or as much of an unknown as one was capable of being when around a Holmes, at any rate.

Peter hadn't expected any competition apart from the incumbent mayor, and considering the man had had contested rule of this city for as long as people had been in it, perhaps longer, Peter hadn't expected much of a fight from him. This mayoral election had started out as a lock, but upon stepping into city hall and realizing that the person that he'd spotted awhile back on the network with someone jokingly asking if he'd already taken over the government was there as well, his self-assurance became less solid.

Of course, if the man wanted a competition, Peter was more than willing to give him one. This would certainly make it more interesting.

"I see I'm not the only one with the intent to improve things around here," Peter said by way of introduction, putting on his sunniest good guy smile as he extended a hand to the stranger who would soon enough because the most familiar person in the whole city. "Peter Fleming, at your service."

Mycroft's smile was the same polite, somewhat knowing smile that he typically wore. He saw no reason to put on airs or pretend to be anything more, or less, than he what he was. He replied easily with a light, "Yes, one would think others would have similar desire to see things bettered upon. A prison it may be but that's hardly an excuse to let it go to rot."

He had eyed the man with little more than a casual glance when he'd first approached. Now, he let his mind sort through all of the information gleamed from the initial encounter as he shook the other man's hand and introduced himself. He opted to bypass adding on the fact that he was already well aware who Peter happened to be. It seemed a bit boastful, really.

"Mycroft Holmes. A pleasure."

Peter had thought for a moment that the man had to be kidding. Peter had only been paying a modicum of attention to the conversation that he'd glanced at, but he could tell that this man looked nowhere near Victorian as he should with an introduction like that. He was a fellow countryman. That much was easily discernible from even the fewest words, but it still felt as if someone were playing a rather elaborate joke on him.

"You don't say," Peter finally vocalized, sounding far more amused than he really meant to. But really, it was almost too much. When he'd formulated this plan, the election had been of little consequence. The mayor had been a ease competitor, someone who was hardly up to his standards at all, and this would have been a simple lark that ended with a swift victory at the end of the month. But now...

Well, at least this would be more interesting.

Returning Mycroft's smile, matching it in both depth and knowing understanding, Peter stopped shaking the man's hand but didn't let go for a moment as he inclined his head slightly towards the other man, "I suppose I should go right ahead and drop whatever altruistic pretext I've been feigning then?"

Mycroft could practically see the other man's thought process as clearly as if it were written upon his face. The doubt, the hesitation, the vague uncertainty. He continued standing there, not relinquishing his hold nor lowering his gaze or smile.

Wait for it...

And, sure enough, there it was. The sudden shift from faked public pretences to an acknowledgement that the playing field was suddenly far more even than it had seemed to be. Peter Fleming was most certainly an intelligent man, Mycroft had to admit. He was almost impressed. Almost.

"Now really, I would think that would be your decision," he replied, tone entirely casual. His smile was still in place, giving an outward appearance to the few in the room glancing their way that they were getting along splendidly, but his eyes shone with a hardness that very few ever truly witnessed coming from the seemingly benign man. Calmly he pulled his hand away.

"I see no current reason to ruin the public's perception that you're simply a concerned citizen with a penchant for getting things done, although I do appreciate the attempt not to insult my intelligence too terribly."

"If you are who you say you are even an attempt to would prove to be futile," Peter said, figuring that blunt would probably serve him best at the moment. While the man in front of him was far less Victorian than Peter would have assumed that name would be attached to, he wasn't willing to put anything past this place. Whether he was truly Mycroft Holmes or simply a man with queer parents who was taking advantage of the influence the name had in a place filled to the brim with fictitious characters, Peter wasn't willing to take the chance.

"Of all of the people I might have expected to compete with for this position, you would have been rather far down on the list. It is rather public." And petty. In fact, were he not rather hard up, Peter himself wouldn't have been caught dead running for such a minor position. He'd always figured if he ever ventured into politics, it would be for a senate position, if anything. Mayoral races hadn't even been on his radar.
