Who: Messrs. Padfoot and Prongs
What: Underage drinking and some Sirius serious conversations.
When: BACKDATED to the night of James’ arrival.
Where: The roof of Building D.
Rating/Warnings: PG, for language.
Status: Incomplete

When Lily and James had moved into Godrics Hollow, and Remus and Sirius had moved into their grubby little flat in London, the two ringleaders of the little gang had spent quite a few evenings sat on the roof of Sirius’ building, talking bollocks and getting drunk. And even though James was only sixteen and hadn’t even kissed his future wife yet, let alone moved in with her, Sirius didn’t see any reason to ignore that tradition.

“Here.” He cracked open a bottle that smelt a little like something Pomfrey would give Remus after a particulary vicious full moon, and passed it over. Then he couldn’t help but grin and lean forward to catch James’ cheek between thumb and forefinger. “Awh! Look at you!” He cooed, teasing smile almost ripping his face in two. “This is what parenthood must feel like. If... you know, you were a crap parent who got your kid pissed.”

Sirius leant back against the barrier that separated them from a dramatic drop and lit up a cigarette, taking a deep inhalation and peering across at James. Perhaps it should have been an issue that Sirius’ best mate had turned up five years younger than Sirius himself, but he was so bloody pleased to see him he found he hardly cared. After all, he’d loved sixteen year old James. That was Prongs before Lily had got to him and made him all responsible and (God forbid) perhaps even a little dull. Although there was a lot to fill him in on, and it wasn’t exactly anything that anyone could describe as comfortable. But he had to know, before someone who wasn’t Sirius told him.

After all, the two boys had been almost attached by the hip from the moment they met on the train when they were eleven years old. No’ one, not even Remus, knew them better than they knew each other, even with half a decade suddenly separating them. And it wasn’t as if Sirius had grown up an awful lot since he was sixteen anyway. He was a little more battle-weary, perhaps. A lot more closed off and damaged, but deep down he was the same bloke.

"Piss off, Padfoot," James laughed, slapping Sirius's hand away from his face. Then he sniffed whatever muggle drink he'd just been handed, made an ick-face, and proceeded to swig some from the bottle anyway. And then he coughed a bit because, well, it wasn't what he was used to, that's all.

Once he recovered from his minor coughing fit, he took another drink and then looked over to see Sirius watching him. He didn't look away; he just studied the differences between the Sirius he knew from school and this older version, and then passed the bottle back. "So... what's with this place, then? I know you said stuff on the thingy, but that seems a bit public. And what's bothering you?"

Leaning forward, he took the cigarette from Sirius and had a quick smoke before passing it back as well.

To be fair to James, the drink was absolute piss. Sirius suspected either he or Moony had brought it as part of some deal and had just never got the guts to drink it. Still, he couldn't help but chuckle at James' little coughing fit. "Want me to get you some pumpkin juice instead?" he checked, taking the bottle back and helping himself to a hearty swig. It burnt on the way down, and he pulled a face of his own as it pooled heavily in his stomach.

Passing over the cigarette, Sirius slid down the ledge to sit on the floor, long legs stretched out before him as he took the lit cylinder back. Perhaps this wasn't the most responsible way to spend an evening, but it was James. Sirius knew for a fact that they had both smoked and drank by the time they'd sat their OWLs. It wasn't as if he was corrupting him or anything. Sirius took another generous gulp of booze and passed the bottle back just as a cold wind ripped past them, lifting hair from the back of his neck and causing faint goosebumps to appear over his arms. Someone shouted a long way away, down on the street.

"It's called Colligo," Sirius told him again, around the cigarette. "People get brought here from all over the shop, dropped in that library and told to just get on with it. It was 1979 when I got brought here. Same with Moony. People think it's a collection. Kinda like... I dunno. A showcase? A museum? There's not much to do about it, to be honest. We can't get home so we just have to stick it out until whoever in charge sees to send us back."

He shrugged, offering James the cigarette. A thin tendril of whispy smoke coiled upwards from the glowing end, and Sirius let out a cloud of the stuff through slightly parted lips. "Sometimes crap happens. I've been here six months and I've seen an alien invasion, inferi, people being forced to tell the truth... Oh, and some of us were given a bloody sex change. I had tits for way longer than I was comfortable with."

He cocked an eyebrow in James' direction. Bloody hell, he was young. Sirius almost didn't want to tell him the truth about what was bothering him. But James would know, and he was pretty sure this was something he couldn't charm his way out of. Still, best let Prongs get his head around that lot first before they started on the real 'this is your life' part of the conversation...
