Phillipa was curled up on the couch, one arm around her stomach. She'd been crying off and on and now her stomach hurt. Uncle Arthur had tried to give her a bowl of ice cream but she hadn't touched it, instead just watching it as it slowly melted into an ugly soup in the bowl. She was sadder than she could remember being in a long time. Her mommy had left her again, and her daddy wasn't there, and neither was her grandma or grandpa or even James. She couldn't understand what she had done wrong and why everyone kept leaving her.

It helped that her uncle was there, but Phils was terrified that he was going to leave, too. After all, he had left once - who's to say he wouldn't leave again? Any of them might leave. Mr. Eames, Ms. Ariadne, Sirius, Morpheus, even Mordred. Her eyes filled with tears at the thoughts as she curled up into a tighter ball and pressed her face into the arm of the couch, beginning to cry again. She didn't want to be all alone. She just wanted her parents to be there and everything to be okay again.

Ariadne had woken up late that morning, the combination of last night's stress and an afternoon shift giving her a little breathing space. She dawdled in her room, not wanting to disturb Arthur and Phillipa as they tried to adjust. In some ways he was as bad off as the little girl, just as disoriented but without the privilege of youth to express his real feelings. Then again, Arthur wasn't really the type to express... well, anything.

An unfamiliar sound caught her ear and she eased her door open. Was that singing? In a distinctly baritone range? Ariadne slipped into the living room and watched with a smile. This was possibly the most adorable thing she'd ever seen. She waited till the familiar French folk song came around to the next verse before she joined in. "L'était une p'tit' poul' rousse qu'allait pondre dans la mousse. Pondait un p'tit' coco, que l'enfant mangeait tout chaud."

Phillipa was singing quietly with Arthur, her cheek resting on his chest, eyes half closed as she started to nod off a little, when she suddenly heard a female voice. She broke off in mid word and sat up, huge eyes seeking out the source because at first it sounded like her mommy. When she saw that it was Ariadne, though, the smile that had started fell abruptly, and she curled up and tucked her face in the crook of her uncle Arthur's elbow as tears welled up again, no longer singing the song. She'd been so excited, thinking that her mommy was back, and while she really did like Ms. Ariadne a lot, she would much rather have seen her mommy standing in the doorway.
