Who: Sirius and Ariadne
What: Ariadne needs somewhere to vent. Preferably, at Sirius.
When: This afternoon.
Where: Sirius' flat.
Rating/Warnings: TBD. Probably language.
Status: In progress

The flat was already starting to show signs of Remus' presence. It was a lot tidier than it had been, for one. Okay, so there was still a dozen people's worth of crap lying around, but it was an organized mess. And it was just mess. It wasn't unclean. There was a stack of books on the coffee table, alongside an abandoned cup of tea and what looked like a rather intense hangman competition, where the little stick figure men were charmed to flail and wave their limbs sadly from their nooses.

Sirius was reclining back on the sofa, legs thrown up on one arm, head resting on the other. The Buzzcocks were playing from somewhere in the kitchen, and he was gnawing thoughtfully on his bottom lip as he flicked through one of the books Moony had left in here, turning it upside-down with a frown, as if that would make it any more exciting. Absently, he reached out with one hand, fingers skimming over the PDA resting on the coffee table and instead grabbing his wand, charming the pages until the words began to squirm over the paper. That'd annoy Remus no end.

When Sirius glanced up, he was mildly surprised to see Ariadne standing there. He always left the door open, of course. He always had, even when he lived in London. It had driven the Order mad. Sirius' eyebrows rose in mild surprise, but he grinned and slammed the book closed, tossing it carelessly onto the floor beside the sofa. "Alright gorgeous?"

"Were you reading?" Ariadne asked, watching him. She'd decided to stop by on her way home from work, with the thought of asking him a few questions about what had been going on. The much cleaner state of the apartment, however, had distracted her from her intended purpose. Also the utterly unfamiliar activity.

"Like, reading an actual book?" she continued, pushing his legs aside and sitting down on the couch. He was entirely too tall, she decided. Of course, so was pretty much everybody when compared to her. It had led to a short stint in high school of wearing very tall gothy boots, but she'd given that up after too many twisted ankles. "Did you go insane and start cleaning and reading?"

"I can read, you know," Sirius pointed out, feigning hurt. "I only act stupid to put you lot at ease. Looks and brains would be too much for you all the handle." He allowed Ariadne to push his legs aside to sit down, quickly swinging the long limbs back up so they rested across her lap. He needed the space, he decided. He was a growing lad.

"Although, no," the animagus admitted, stretching over to collect the book he'd just abandoned. "Here," he passed it over to her, so she could crack it open and examine the way the words squirmed over the pages like tiny, inky worms. "Remus moved in," he added, as explanation for the clean, verging-on-tidy living conditions. "The version of him from my time. What's up? Missed my utterly addictive company?"

"I know you can, I just can't picture you reading anything longer than one of your motorcycle magazines." Ariadne didn't bother shoving his legs off, just propped her feet on the coffee table. When she examined the book she frowned and tossed it back at his head. "That's going to give me a migraine."

Remus? That definitely explained why the patina of filth over the place was lightened. "And you repay him for making this place livable by fucking with his books. You are clearly the best friend ever." She tugged her hair out of the ponytail it had been in and shook her hair out; it was utilitarian rather than sexy. "I wanted to see if you'd tell me what exactly you and Eames did the other night. Because 'get drunk and in fights' doesn't seem to cover it."

Sirius grinned. "Solves the mystery of why everyone was so shocked when me and James actually passed our exams." He dodged the book that came flying at his head, still grinning in that annoyingly perky manner he had. Remus would probably have exactly the same reaction. Only Remus had the means to fix his reading material. It wasn't a particularly tricky charm.

"He'd be more freaked out if I didn't mess with his books," he pointed out, watching as she pulled her hair from the band holding it from her face, chestnut strands falling pleasantly down to her shoulders. She really was adorable, Sirius decided fondly, and decided to show his fondness for the girl in question by jiggling his knees so his legs knocked against her. Then he rolled his eyes and scoffed.

"I don't remember. I was hammered." Not completely true, but as good an excuse as any.

"If you ever pull that on anything in my place I'm going to kick your ass. Fair warning." She stretched her arms over her head, then folded them on top of Sirius's legs. "And stop jiggling." Ariadne would have enjoyed his company more if he didn't act like an eight-year-old half the time.

"I'm sure you remember something. I mean, I guess I should thank you for making sure he didn't actually get himself killed. But I'm curious." Ariadne rolled her head onto her shoulder, as much to stretch as to look over at him. "That's all." Maybe it was.

Sirius rolled his eyes at her curious look, letting his own head sag back over the arm as he gave an exasperated sigh. "I found him in the worst pub in the world, then..." he frowned, straightening up and screwing up his face in concentration as he searched the muggy recesses of his mind. Bloody alcohol. It lived to make things difficult.

"Then I tried to steel beer, but everyone got very offended and the bouncer and some bloke tried to kick us out. There was a bit of a minor scuffle." If that was what you could call Eames nearly breaking some poor blokes jaw before Sirius happily fractured his face. "Then..." He hesitated, realizing that this probably wasn't the best thing to share. But perhaps he could gloss over it. Merlin, it was like explaining things to McGonagall. If McGonagall had been a tiny, loud and slightly violent muggle girl. He shifted his legs a little in her lap.

"Then we stopped by the Library. And then I got a burger from a van and puked it up in a hedge, dropped him off at yours and went to bed. A delightful time was had by all. I may write it up as a short story of bravery and heroism."

"In the world? It's not that big a city, it can't be that bad." She'd been to a few of them, obviously. But not the worst one, or at least not one that she could remember. Clearly her friends were trying to keep it classy around her. The "minor scuffle" would account for some of it, but... then came the kicker.

"Stopped by? Jesus. You really must have been completely beyond shitfaced if you thought that was a good idea. What did you do, pee on a bookcase?"

"Eames took a piss in an alley?" Sirius offered hopefully, hiding the fact that he was a little put out that she'd latched onto that bit of the story. If it had been him, he'd have completely zoned out when the word 'library' was mentioned. 'Puke', on the other hand, would have captured his attention entirely. Everyone enjoyed a good vomiting story.

"There may have been a slight.... conflict," he finally admitted. "A difference of opinion, really. No harm done. We're both alive, so I think we should forget it and simply move on with our lives." Thank Merlin she'd already thrown the book at him. He didn't really fancy having to face Ariadne when she had one of Remus' painfully heavy volumes as ammunition, especially when she realized Sirius had allowed her best friend to wander off and fight some rather-lethal faceless Knights. It was rather like facing Lily when she realized he was the one who had talked James into climbing the chimney.

Ariadne rubbed at her forehead. Maybe she would get that migraine anyway. "Next time could you try to dissuade him from fighting the empty magic suits of armor? Before you both get yourselves killed?" She couldn't really be that mad given that it was a few days later and neither of them had been extremely hurt.

"Do you think he's going to be okay?" she asked, then looked back at Sirius. "You know what, don't answer that, I shouldn't ask you about touchy-feely emotional stuff. You wouldn't tell me even if you did know, it's a dude code of honor thing." Maybe she was being a little harsh. Maybe not.

"Please," Sirius waved a hand vaguely. "I had it under control." Or, he had done during the moments when he'd been able to stand and hadn't been giggling or distracted by another Knight. "It's good to get it out of his system. Otherwise he'd have bottled it in and ended up all poisoned and twisted inside like my darling brother."

Sirius was probably the leading champion in lashing out at the world when he was upset or angry. He could relate to Eames' need that night to simply scream and hit until you felt better. Not that he was stupid enough to believe that was all their friend needed until he got over what had happened. But it was a start. Sirius met Ariadne's eye as she looked over to him, before smiling and swinging his legs from her lap.

"Got it in one," he smirked, before absently ruffling her hair as he strode past, heading towards the kitchen and calling back over his shoulder. "He'll be alright. Might take a while, but... you want a drink? Or..." There was the sound of the fridge opening. "Some cheese? Or... raw steak? Merlin! We've got tomatoes!"

"Or like Cobb. He was so guilty over Mal's death that he kept subconsciously imagining her as a one-woman force of revenge." Ariadne looked up at the ceiling. Why had she told him that? She didn't want to trust Sirius with everything, even if he already knew about inception and how it worked. "How is Regulus, anyway? I haven't heard from him in a few days. Did you stop baiting him or did he just not come to me this time?"

She turned and stretched out on the couch as Sirius left, pushing her hair back and shaking it out. "I know Eames will be fine eventually. I shouldn't worry about him." She couldn't help it, though. "What are you planning on doing with those tomatoes? Should I be concerned?"

Sirius' eyebrows lifted in mild surprise, "Mal? But she's lovely." He stepped into the kitchen as he spoke, rolling his eyes as she asked after his brother. Merlin, why was everyone so concerned about the idiot? "As far as I can tell he spent today making bigoted comments and upsetting Juno," he pulled a little face into the fridge. "Although that was meant to be a secret. So hush. But I'm surprised it took him this long."

For someone who had spent three years listening to Regulus' views swing closer and closer to those of his parents, he couldn't say this was unexpected. But he decided to keep the fact that he intended to speak to Regulus personally later tonight to himself. She'd just try and keep him from going. And anyway, he didn't want to discuss Kreacher.

Sirius reached into the fridge, pulling a tomato out and tossing it absently in one hand. "Last time I was babysitting the kids we had a tomato fight." There were still pink stains on the paint around the apartment. "D'you want a drink or not?"

"She is." Ariadne was still thrown by that occasionally, still had nightmares sometimes about being in Limbo in Cobb's house with the vengeful spirit coming after her and Fischer tied up on the porch. At least she was still dreaming. That had to be a good sign. She covered her eyes at Sirius's little tidbit of gossip. "He did? Awesome. And here I thought he was doing better." Ariadne knew she liked to try and fix people. It wasn't something she did on purpose, but she couldn't just stand by and watch them self-destruct. And Regulus had seemed like he really was trying to improve himself. But if he was insulting Juno... that really wasn't something that deserved a pass.

"A tomato fight. Of course. Just water's good, thanks." She could save the drinking for later. Maybe she'd stop by and see Eames. Because that wouldn't be a bad decision or anything.

"Hmmm," Speaking from the kitchen, Sirius made a vague noise in agreement. "Yeah, well... That's my family for you. They can all be civil in company."

How many Family dinners had he been made to sit through with a load of Ministry officials and other important people his Father wanted to make 'connections' with? The perfect family image they were bullied to present never lasted, and Godric forbid anyone did anything to ruin it. It never looked so bad from the outside, and yet he'd never dream of letting anyone in. That was half the reason the thing with Regulus was so frustrating.

Sirius fetched Ariadne her water and carried it through, passing it over to the girl currently lounging across his sofa. "You get anything from home?" he asked, sliding down to sit crossed legged between the couch and coffee table.

Ariadne shrugged. "So how do we explain you?" Because he wasn't exactly what she would call civil. She took the glass of water and looked down at him, shaking her head. "No, but it looks like people are getting stuff every day, so I figure something will turn up sooner or later. What'd you get, anyway?"

Sirius shrugged, "I'm pretty consistent with my behavior. Anyway, compared to that lot I'm a fucking saint." He reached over the coffee table, pushing a few magazines and volumes aside, along with his and Moony's hangman competition, to find his wand. With the next question he glanced up at Araidne, offered her his widest, most charming smile and nodding towards the windowsill. A small mirror was propped against the glass, reflecting the room back to them.

"James Potter," he called out. The reflection in the mirror shivered, morphed and quickly showed a slightly different view. James and Lily's sitting room, empty at the moment, although voice could be heard a little distance away. Instead of calling out, Sirius turned away, and the mirror showed their own reflections once again. "He's in the kitchen," Sirius told her helpfully, before chuckling and pulling one knee closer to his chest. "We used to use them to talk when we were in separate detentions."

"Consistent. I guess we have to count that as a virtue, but I wouldn't go so far as to call you saintly." Especially not when he was out getting in fights with the suits of armor with Eames.

The shifting reflection and sound of the mirror made her laugh. "So basically you invented the videophone. Well done."

"The what?" Sirius gave her a slightly blank look. A lot of people thought he was weird with his genuine confusion when it came to a lot of muggle stuff. But for a bloke who had used his first phone a few months ago and had spent his whole childhood in a muggle-hating household, he thought he was doing pretty well. Sirius groaned and slumped back, lying on his back to peer up at her from the floor.

"So you're worried about Eames, yeah? He said anything about Arthur?"

"Never mind. After your time." Which was about the fairest explanation, given that she couldn't really explain the technology behind it either. She drank some of the water and reached over Sirius to put the glass down on the coffee table, sighing at his question.

"Of course I'm worried. He got plastered, went off to get his face bashed in by the knights, and has been quote-unquote 'fine' ever since." Ariadne tipped her head over the side of the couch to look down at Sirius. "And no, he hasn't said anything. I think it's the fine British tradition of repressing the shit out of everything once again."

"Stiff upper lip and all that," the animagus agreed seriously, "We stick with what we know. No need to make a scene - we soldier on." Although when it came to certain things Sirius was far from normal in that respect. If he was angry, excited, whatever, people tended to know about it. Then again, other things... well, he'd probably skin himself before he let anyone know how he was feeling when it came to particular topics.

"When we were getting our faces bashed in by the Knights," he revealed, "he was saying he felt guilty about not realizing what Arthur leaving meant. Even though he was baby-faced at the time so that's absolute bollocks."

"Which is really stupid sometimes," she said, just as serious. Ariadne was, by and large, a fan of being honest. She'd seen what repression could do, and she would have been lying if she had said she wasn't afraid of it happening to Eames. But it was so fucking hard to tell what he was thinking anyway that she wasn't sure if she should worry.

Ariadne rolled back onto her back, staring up at the ceiling. "Of course it's bollocks," she said, the British slang sounding awkward in her mouth. "But it makes sense in a sick way."

"Course," Sirius agreed, "I'd feel exactly the same." If anyone he cared about in this place got sent home, and something meant he wasn't given his chance to, well, miss them, he didn't know what they'd do. If he was in Eame's position, he'd be off punching some Knights as well.

Sirius was back on his feet again soon, stopping for a moment to grab a pack of cigarettes from the side. They were Remus', and a bit lighter than what he was used to, but they would do. Sirius pulled the window open and balanced himself on the sill, one leg dangling outside the building.

"Give him a few weeks," he muttered around the cigarette balanced between his lips, concentrating on lighting the thing with his wand. "See what happens. No point pushing him."

Ariadne glanced over, surprised. Okay, he wasn't some sort of cold unfeeling monster, but Sirius so often hid his depth of feeling under a light and easygoing veneer that it was somewhat shocking to hear the sentiment from him. She held back her first question - which was whether she would inspire that reaction, because god knew she didn't want to sound quite that needy and pathetic - and propped herself on one elbow to watch Sirius start smoking.

"That was my plan already, actually," she said. Ariadne sat up and swung her legs to the floor. "I mean, there's not a hell of a lot else I can do, other than keeping an eye on him. Not without starting a fight or making him push me away even harder." And that would be entirely counterproductive.

Sirius nodded, pulling the cigarette from his mouth and exhaling a plume of fine, sharp smoke. "I do love a well-constructed plan," he grinned, slumping back against the window frame. "I feel this can only go marvelously well." Sirius shot Ariadne a wicked grin, then craned his neck to peer out the window at the street below, curiously watching the people passing. Without really paying attention to what he was doing, he flicked his wand in the direction on the kitchen, and the kettle immediately started to steam.

"You heard from Regulus lately?" he asked, doing his best to keep his tone casual, gaze still fixed out the window.

"I don't think it really counts as well-constructed," she replied, shrugging. "It's more of a default. What would be my other options, anyway?" She hoped he wouldn't fall out the window.

The fraternal relationship between Sirius and Regulus baffled her continually. But she could give an honest answer to that question. "Not really. I kind of snapped at him, but he got that it was because I was upset about Eames." Ariadne's mouth twisted. "I think he's staying out of my way. Or it's because he's being nice and avoiding Eames and I'm just part of that. This whole doppelganger thing sucks." If she was being honest with herself, seeing someone who looked like Arthur would not have been high on her list of favorite things at the moment.

"Errrrrmmmmmmmmmm...." Sirius dragged the single syllable out for an annoying length of time, head falling back as he blew a cloud of smoke into the air. "Veritaserum? Interrogation at wand point? Casual sex? The possibilities are endless."

The animagus slipped the cigarette back between his lips as she answered the question about his brother. "Good," he replied shortly, before a thoughtful expression crossed his face. "I wonder if my doppelganger will ever show up? He better be something brilliant. Fuck. You'd have to mess with people a little bit, wouldn't you? Get Prongs drunk and then have one stand dancing at either end of the corridor. Or pull twins..."

"I'm not a wizard," Ariadne pointed out, standing up. "And I meant options that aren't terrible and counterproductive." Casual sex with Eames? It was a contradiction in terms for her. Besides the fact that he wasn't interested and was more or less grieving.

"Twins? You're gross. This conversation is rapidly sinking into the gutter." Ariadne gave him a smirk. "What if he doesn't have a personality like yours at all? He might not be interested in pulling terrible pranks or skeeving out girls."

"Buzzkill," Sirius smirked. "Those kind of options are my specialty." He quirked an eyebrow upwards for a moment, slipping the burning tube of tobacco between his smiling lips and holding it there for a moment, filling his chest with smoke. Ariadne had clambered to her feet, and he could feel her staring at him from over the room.

"I'd hardly call freaking James out a 'terrible' prank," Sirius grinned from his position on the windowsill. "More of a mildly amusing pastime."

He rolled his eyes at the mildly annoyed expression that crossed her face, swinging the leg that had been dangling outside the building back inside and standing up. "Then I'd have to talk him round." He gave up on the cigarette, flicking the still glowing butt out the open window. "To save you from the boredom."

"Hey, if you want to sleep with Eames again, go ahead. If you think that'll make him feel better." Ariadne crossed the room and stood next to Sirius for a moment, looking up as he stood.

"I don't think this place will ever let me get too bored, but you and I obviously have different standards for boring."
