WHO: Lucy Saxon and the Master
WHAT: A surprisingly calm reunion.
WHEN: Not long after Lucy posted this.
WHERE: The steps of the Grand Library, to start.
RATING: PGish [language and references to darker themes]
STATUS: Complete!

The Master was alive.

Lucy had known there was always a chance he would be resurrected. She had known, as soon as she was settled in prison, she had to start making plans to stop that from happening. However no sooner had she received her sentence did she find herself in that strange little library with knights who seemed determined to keep her out. Clutching the device they'd given her in her hand, she stared once more at the conversation she was having over what she guessed was a public message board of some kind. Her stomach tightened at the words that stared back up at her, finger lightly dancing across the small picture that made identification all too easy.

The Master was alive.

She wasn't prepared for this. She was in an unfamiliar city that apparently wasn't even on Earth, she couldn't leave, and she wasn't at all prepared to face him again. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest as she quickly scrolled through the menu of her PDA. It had given her the number of a flat, as well as a map, and she was curious if there was anything else of use. Anything at all that might help her.

Coming up empty, the woman closed her eyes for a brief moment. Her jaw quivered, lips pressing softly together as she swallowed down the emotions rampaging through her. When her eyes reopened she was calm, almost detached. Rising to her feet, she gripped her PDA tightly with one hand and began descending the stairs. She knew she wouldn't make it all the way to her new flat. She knew he was already on his way because she knew him. What she didn't know, though, was when exactly their paths would cross or what would happen once they did.

Only if he wanted to. There was a brief hesitation at the time. He could say stop. He could turn away and pretend like he'd never shown her anything, clam-up about it again and pretend like the last thousand years or more had been the only existence that he'd ever had. But there wasn't much more to show, so there was little reason to stop now. Taking a deep breath, the last of the pain clearing out of his mind, he turned slightly, deciding it was perhaps best to stay seated as he settled his other hand on Lucy's cheek and bowed his head back towards her.

"Koschei, what are you doing?" The question was voiced suddenly in Lucy's mind, the figure of a short woman with long auburn hair and sharp features, the exact opposite picture from the tall, lithe, dark haired woman with spring curls and rounded cheeks that had been a matter of the picture before. But the feelings that pinged towards her were the same, her presence provoking a swell of conflicted emotions.

Turning back towards the woman, the Doctor, and his companion that stood in the doorway watching them, the younger version of him hesitated momentarily before venturing to explain, "I... I am ensuring that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands."

"What?" The short, squat, nervous looking dark haired man who was presumably an earlier version of the Doctor voiced, sounding honestly surprised as he approached Koschei and the console he was standing in front of.

"Perhaps destroying the Darkheart was not the best option. A device like this has the most exciting possibilities. Its value for science and study is inestimable," Koschei ventured once more, looking at his friend with imploring eyes.

"As is its capacity for evil if it’s misused," The Doctor shot back, though not with the emotion one might have expected. Instead, his tone held more of a 'you should know this already' edge.

Raising a hand to stop his friend, as if he expected that that would not be the end of the words that he had to say, Koschei shook his head, his tone falling back into a reassuring lilt, "That will not happen – I will ensure that it isn't misused."

"Koschei, anyone who uses it will misuse it! Either deliberately or unintentionally. It’s already been used to destroy Terileptus..." The Doctor exclaimed, frantic at first before he froze, a quiet terror sinking into his body language and features. "And there are only two people here who could have the knowledge to do that – you and I!"

"Make that three, Doctor," Koschei corrected quietly, as if it was something of little concern. "I demonstrated some minor applications
to Adjudicator Terrell."

"You did what?"

"It was the lesser of two evils, Doctor," the younger version explained, keeping his tone even, laying out the logic. "Was I supposed to leave the Darkheart running as it was until the only intelligent species in the universe was humanity? What else could I do but try to limit the damage, and keep things under control?"

"A whole race has been made extinct. That’s genocide, Koschei!" The Doctor said, sounding more and more frantic as to the fact that he was having to even explain that. "This Darkheart should have been switched off and destroyed!"

"I can’t destroy it, Doctor, not yet," Koschei said, the logic falling out of his voice, the hesitant sorrow returning as he diverted his eyes. "With this, I can save Ailla," He said, pausing before looking up at the Doctor, imploring his friend to understand with his gaze.

The sudden injection from the other side of the room, however, pulled his gaze away from the Doctor, "You mean you’ve allowed the death of a whole species just so that I can live? A race died because of me?" The auburn haired woman asked, quietly stunned and paled from the very idea.

"What are you babbling about?" Koschei snapped, angered by the words, by the very nerve, until the Doctor coughed to clear his throat and catch his friend's attention.
