The Doctor bounded along, hands shoved deep into his pockets, wide, painfully enthusiastic grin splashed over his sharp features. It had been a while since he'd been this excited about something - well, at least since his zombies had been taken away from him. But this... this really was just like old times. Adric! He was barrelling off into a potentially dangerous wood with very little idea what was about to happen, with Adric. Excellent. Almost made him feel nine hundred again. Apart from, obviously, with a different face. And a little bit more baggage. But still... It was brilliant! Had he said that yet? He better make sure.

"This is brilliant!" He told the boy, grinning and spinning on his heel to walk backwards, all the time facing his old companion. The Doctors trademark long coat flapped around his ankles, skimmed over the browning grass as he cocked his head cheekily, examining Adric through sharp brown eyes. "Look at us! Ah-ha!"

With that final burst of laughter, he spun back around, glancing up and down the edge of the wood before taking a breath and ducking his head to enter the trees. A few thorns caught at his trousers, but once you were over the initial brambles it wasn't too bad. The Doctor emerged into a clearing, which was made cool by the canopy of branches arching over their heads, and ran a hand over the back of his neck. That grin was still in place.

"Lovely!"

As adaptable as ever, Adric was adjusting quickly to his new setting, taking in what he could only assume were leaps in human technology and checking what he could about the city at large. A hundred dollars wasn't going to last him a long time, he knew that much, but he was didn't see any point in worrying about things like that until he'd sorted out the more major issues in this city...like how it even existed in the first place. It was practically a huge contained paradox, with time lines and realities intersecting so casually. It was ridiculous to him that no one had seemed to realize that none of this should be here in the first place and even if it was here, there should be more corrections going on in order to fix the fractures in the course of reality.

No one seemed to except the Doctor, that is.

It was odd, seeing him like this again. It was almost as the two versions that he'd known had been smashed together, ticks and foibles from each represented and yet the whole being so extraordinarily different. It was going to take adjusting, just like the first change had, but Adric could honestly say right now that he didn't mind nearly as much as he had. Almost dying put a lot of things in perspective, after all.

"It seems to go on forever," Adric said, looking up at the canopy and shielding his eyes from the few scant beams of light that were managing to pierce the cover. "Whatever's keeping this all intact has got to be in here somewhere."

The Doctor followed Adric's eyeline, staring off into the depths of the trees. He had come here once before, but only for a moment, out of curiosity. He hadn't gone far, mainly because he'd had the TARDIS back and the novelty of flying her - even just within the city - was still fresh. But now he had another pair of eyes looking at this bundle of trees, and it was obvious. It should be in here. Why wouldn't it be?

"Hmmm." The Doctor made an odd noise in agreement, then scrabbled in his breast pocket, producing the screwdriver and flicking it open to scan the immediate area. The buzz and whir of the sonic machine filled the clearing, the blinking blue light interrupting the birdsong and the noise of the wind through the branches.

"Blargh!" The Doctor brought it back to his face, narrowing his eyes to get the readings, tongue wedged thoughtfully against his top teeth. "If we had more of an idea what we were looking for..." He sighed, and tried scanning again, bounding around the clearing on the balls of his feet like a child on a sugar rush, balancing on top of a fallen log for a moment before hopping down. He was kneeling on a branch a few feet above the ground when he called over the Adric. "What do you think of it then? Colligo?"

He snapped the screwdriver back to his face to check the scan. "Odd, isn't it?"

"Whatever it is, it will have to stand out," Adric said, frowning to himself as he stepped towards the edge of the clearing, peering into the thicket of trees. It was impossible to tell what might lie beyond this forest or if there even was anything beyond it. There might have been something buried deep within the cover, but where and in what direction? There were far too many variables that wandering around in circles would only end with them wandering around in circles. They needed something to fixate on. "Is there anything putting off an unusual amount of energy? Any odd technology signatures? Anything at all?"

Because there had to be something.

The question caught him off guard, though. His attention turning back to the Doctor over his shoulder, Adric shrugged as an answer, "It's definitely odd. There isn't any obvious purpose to it. Being brought here and told to live? It doesn't make any sense. What's the end game? What are they hoping to achieve...whoever's in charge?"

The Doctor gave a frustrated shout, opening his palm and smacking the sonic screwdriver into it irritably, as if sheer irritation could shock the thing into working. "There's too much stuff! Too many people with powers and radiation and odd... stuff!" He threw his arms up, face twisted in annoyance before he once again started the scanning. "Humans. Always with the stuff. Nothing's quiet any more... Oh!"

He waved a hand vaguely in Adric's direction, most of his focus attached to the piece of equipment in his hand as he stumbled around the clearing, moving away from the entrance to the Forest. "Colligo. From the Latin 'colligere'. Gathering together. Collection. It's a collection! We're one big, living, breathing, growing collection! We're exhibits. You should meet some of the people here. Merlin's here! Merlin! Can you believe... Oooooooohhh!!"

The Time Lord came to a sudden halt, his excited grin blossoming slowly as what he was looking for bleeped and flashed into existance. "There you aare!!"

A collection? So they were being assembled to be part of a menagerie of oddities from about time and the universe? That was... Odd. Very odd. And it definitely sounded like something that a madman might do. A madman with the ability to manipulate reality. "The Master isn't behind this, is he?" Adric asked carefully. "It certainly seems like it would fit his MO."

Of course, they would all probably be dead if he was the one running it, so maybe that was a bit of a leap.

"Merlin?" Adric asked before crossing back over to where the Ten was, cranking his neck and curiosity at the sonic screwdriver. "What? What is it?"

The Doctor stumbled over a twig, turning to face Adric with a confused expression. He'd forgotten when they'd met the Master together. He was so much older now. Things were bound to get a bit fuzzy. "The Master?" He screwed up his face for a moment, then shook his head, forcing a smile. "Naaaaah! Him?! It's not nearly dramatic enough for him. You know what he's like."

He considered, for a moment, recounting the story of the last time he'd faced him. But then the memory of a limp, still-warm body cradled in his arms flashed to the front of his mind, a body with both its hearts finally silent, and he forced it back down. Maybe another time. Maybe. "I've no idea who's doing this..." he admitted. And the Doctor hated having no idea.

"Merlin! He.... Oh, don't worry." The Doctor showed the screen to his companion, where a single pulse flashed repeatedly. "Look at that. That's a pattern. That's a beautiful pattern. What makes an energy pattern like that?!? And strong. Strong enough to... Ah-HA!" He reached out, grabbing Adric's sleeve and giving it a sharp tug so he was forced to stumble after him. The Doctor set off at a sprint, jumping over a rabbit hole in a way that was oddly energetic for a man in his second millennium.

"Come on!"
