There were many things that Merlin would not admit to doing - ever.

First, Merlin had not now and would not ever drink alcoholic drinks that were pink in nature, very sweet, and better tasting with every glass. Second, he would not be getting drunk because that had the potential for him to do something stupid. Third, he wouldn't lay on his floor, buzzed from the alcohol, listening to music.

He might not admit to it, but that is what he'd done. Not for any particular reason. It'd been a long day, long month. Now he had plans to meet Morgana for the first time in little over a month. After leaving Gwen's place, he'd gone out to get a drink, and got more then he'd bargained for. He'd been given something sweet, so tasty that he'd ordered two more. Now he was laying on the floor of his apartment listening to music. His eyes were closed, and he was flushed and tingling all over. Merlin was enjoying himself actually, it was nice, and he was focused only on the steady beat of the music filling his apartment. He was still buzzed and didn't even realize the door had opened.

Not that he'd be bothered. He was in too good of a mood to be really upset about much right now. He wasn't thinking completely clearly, and his worries had temporarily taken a back seat. Finally he turned to the person standing over him, and found himself smiling up at Arthur. "Eeeevening, sire."

Merlin rolled his eyes. Maybe it smelled a little, but not gutter worthy. Sure there was the alcohol, and maybe some lingering smell of smoke from the bar. He smiled and lifted his hands, eyes burning gold for a minute while he fixed things. The smell faded from the room, a fresh set of clothes coming out of his room, and switching out with his current ones. The dirty clothes went into a hamper. Clean and without tavern smells, he turned his head to look up at Arthur. "Better?"

He smiled and pushed himself up to lean on his elbow, and sip at the plastic cup still half full of the pink alcohol he'd been enjoying. It tasted like watermelon. "Did you see the nursery? It's pink. Like my drink." He asked, not mentioning that Gwen seemed upset with Arthur for some reason.

Arthur studied Merlin for a long moment, taking in the glassy eyes and pink cheeks and equally pink drink/thing and gave him up as a lost cause. Merlin couldn't hold his head when drinking and Arthur could smell the alcohol in the glass like it had reached out to smack him.

"I'm not even going to ask who gave it to you."

He sank down beside Merlin, drawing one knee to his chest as he sprawled out beside his friend. Arthur concluded he wasn't drunk enough for this day by far. "Thank you for going over."

It really wasn't that bad. He wasn't fall down drunk or anything stupid like that. He was buzzed enough to feel warm, lightheaded enough to be in a silly happy mood, and thoroughly enjoying the loud upbeat music. He shrugged when Arthur didn't ask, and didn't offer any answers himself. Instead he just smiled when the other sat down beside him. He would've offered to get Arthur his own if he'd thought the prince would accept it. "I was happy to help." Merlin took another sip and laid back down.

"She loves it. She fell asleep in her chair."

He wasn't about to point out it was his fault she was fretting in their alone. The only person he needed to apologize for that was to Guinevere and he had apologized to her many times over.

"You've adopted some odd habits."

"And everything is alright?" He asked, knowing that he'd upset her a little somehow. She'd mentioned it once then they distracted each other with baby talk and fixing up the nursery. He figured Gwen wouldn't stay upset with Arthur long anyways.

"It's not a habit. I don't drink often. I haven't even had much." Merlin pointed out casually. He leaned over and took another sip of the drink. "It is really good though. Watermelon flavored."

He nudged Arthur with his elbow, wondering what prompted the random visit anyways. He thought Arthur had been with Morgana, and would've just stayed with Gwen since it was kind of late. "How're you?"

"Exhausted. I took Morgana to a fencing lesson. I thought she would appreciate it more than jewelery." Arthur shrugged and leaned backward on his palms. It hadn't been too long ago Arthur hadn't even known what watermelon was, let alone that it was a fruit. But that begged the question, why was Merlin drinking a fruity drink? Why did he need to be drinking at all? At least, Arthur reasoned, Merlin appeared quite happy and relaxed, a marked difference from the last month.

One Arthur planned on fostering as best he could. Everyone had been tense, confessing to some truly disturbing things, but at the end of it, it didn't change the person. Those parts of the personality had already been absorbed. Arthur saw it in all of them. Merlin was quicker to upset and much more subdued, Morgana was snappier and less pliant and Arthur himself was less self-assured. It didn't matter how those traits came forward, so much as they did. No one was actually dead here. That was all Arthur could ask for.

"She did."

At the expense of Arthur's pride.

"I'm not surprised." He even managed a smile at that, even though Morgana wasn't a subject he was all too willing to think or talk about. They hadn't spoken in over a month now. He had tried to take a step back in the right direction with her again with the present he'd given. They even planned on practicing some of the magic together - An idea that made Merlin more nervous then he'd admit for several reasons.

If not for the alcohol he might have been a little annoyed with the fact that Arthur had forgiven her so easily. If he'd known that Arthur could've dealt with the idea of it so easily maybe he ought to have just let Uther die. It would've made his life easier. As it was though, anger just made his thoughts fuzzy, and so he just continued enjoying the sweet drink. He'd been determined not to dwell on it all any more.

"I'm sure you enjoyed it just as much as she did." Pride or not, he was sure Arthur would have had just as much fun. Fencing might not be the same as sparring with the knights back home, but it was close enough.

"I did. It was different than I expected. Good though." Arthur watched Merlin's face go from relaxed to tense back to false cheerfulness and something solid hit his stomach with a splash of acid. That wasn't...fair didn't seem right. He couldn't be the only one to continue to like Morgana. It wouldn't work. He was well-aware that Morgana and Merlin had fallen out but this was getting ridiculous.

"I think I'll try that now." He made a grab for Merlin's drink.

Arthur's expression did something similar to Merlin's had at the subject of Morgana, without the following forced smile, but for different reasons he was sure. Neither seemed all that eager to really talk about it though. Which was probably a good thing.

Instead he just nodded and handed over the glass. "Have you thought of any names for the baby yet?" Merlin asked absently, changing the subject to something more pleasant.

"I don't know where to begin." Arthur surreptitiously sniffed at the drink when it was handed to him before daring to drink it. He sputtered, gagging on the sweetness. He hadn't expected the smell to be quite so accurate.

"What the hell is that?"

"I told you. Watermelon -- something. Alcohol." He shrugged, not exactly sure what exactly was in the glass. It had been mixed for him. All he'd wanted was sweet because he didn't like to actually taste the alcohol. He let Arthur have the drink, folding his arms under his head, and closing his eyes.

"You'll have to think of a name soon." Merlin yawned and had the music turn off. "I like the pink for the nursery, by the way, and the decorations."

"Watermelon-something, alcohol." Arthur ran a hand over his face, eyes squeezed shut as if somehow that would make that explanation better. "It tastes like someone poured a cup of sugar down my throat and chased it with gin."

He set the glass aside, far, far aside, and wiped his mouth on his sleeve. "You would. The decorations are...sweet."

Things were moving fast now, faster than Arthur expected, just when he thought he was almost ready, he felt his world shift beneath him and he came face to face with the realization he was anything but. This child would be dependent on him. This tiny, fragile little girl who would be here in a matter of weeks now. It terrified him. What the hell did he even know about young girls?

"Baby girls are supposed to have sweet things." He pointed out, ignoring the insults to his drink, and just reaching to take the glass back.

He knew Arthur was still worried about the baby, and how he would be as a father. There was only so much reassuring he could do. Arthur would be a wonderful father, and when his daughter was born he'd finally realize that himself. So Merlin just smiled and gave his knee a light squeeze. "Stop worrying." Telling him that would do just about as much good as telling him to stop breathing. It wasn't likely to happen.

Merlin was looking forward to the baby almost as much as they were. He wanted to be in her life as much as Gwen and Arthur would let him.
