WHO: Claire Bennet and Gabriel Gray
WHAT: Claire wants a second opinion. Gabriel insists.
WHEN: Mid-afternoon
WHERE: Claire & Dean's apartment
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

She was pregnant.

Three simple words that had, in a matter of seconds, changed her entire life.

She was pregnant.

Three simple words that she couldn't seem to process no matter how hard she tried.

She was pregnant.

It seemed like a dream, only if it was she didn't want to wake from it. Yes, Claire knew it wasn't necessarily ideal. Her life was busy enough as it was. Colligo was absolutely insane at times. People came and went at random and children sometimes grew up literally overnight. Yet through all of the worry, all of the mild panic that something would happen to ruin everything, Claire was honestly thrilled. Overwhelmed, sure. A bit freaked out, of course. But she was happy. Really, truly happy.

Yet she still couldn't seem to really wrap her mind around the reality of the situation.

She was hoping Gabriel would help with that. When he'd offered her a second opinion, she had accepted with just that thought in mind. To have someone other than Castiel confirm her condition would certainly cement it a bit more firmly in her mind. At least, that was the theory. The only way she would know if she was going to come out of her shocked stupor and really get a grip was after the fact. But even if this didn't work, she had to admit that having someone else verify what Castiel had told her was something she wanted anyway.

Sighing softly and tossing the magazine she'd been flipping through onto the table, Claire absently rubbed Chomper underneath his chin and glanced toward the door. Dean was at work and Ben was presumably still with Adam. She hoped Gabriel showed up soon as she didn't really want a full house while talking to him. She loved her family, of course, but she really needed a chance to discuss things with someone other than her husband-type-person and son. A knock at the door roused her from her thoughts and she smiled lightly as she stood.

"Come on in," she called out, moving away from the couch at toward the foyer to greet her guest with Chomper trotting curiously behind her the entire way.

Claire was pregnant. It was something that was next to impossible to wrap his mind around. She was grown. Gabriel knew that much. After spending nearly a mental decade trapped with her, Gabriel had no doubt in his mind that she was grown, but there was also that niggling in the back of his mind that was telling him that this had the potential to go horribly wrong. Not because of Claire, of course, but... Well, Dean was a great deal older than her, and what Gabriel had been able to see of him on the network certainly didn't provide a picture of responsibility and sound judgment. But as he approached the door, Gabriel resolved that he wouldn't mention any of that.

He just hoped that this whole truth thing would allow him to keep that resolution to himself.

Knocking on the door and hearing Claire's voice, Gabriel pushed open the door, peaking inside and grinning at Claire, "Hey, you," He said, stepping into the apartment and closing the door behind him. Stepping forward, his eyes moved almost instinctively downwards, and...yup. The angel was right.

"Hey." Claire barely had time to state her one word reply before Gabriel's gaze was already sweeping over her. She paused, stomach dropping a bit in anticipation as she studied his face in the hope of being able to tell what he was seeing.

"Well?" she questioned after a second of silence. She'd never been one for being very patient, a fact made obvious as she shifted anxiously from foot to foot. "Everything is okay, right? I mean, I know Cas already said that things were fine but I don't know how many pregnant girls he's really looked at before and with my ability, I just..." She stopped, mainly because she ran out of breath, and did her best not to jump right back into the same nerve-induced babble. Instead she offered him a sheepish smile.

"Sorry," she apologized. "Nerves."

"With your ability, there are two potential scenarios. Either the body rejects the embryos as foreign objects harmful to the body's natural development," Gabriel said, the blank look plain on his face until he looked up at Claire and offered her a soft smile. "Or everything goes so disgustingly smoothly that you don't even notice until someone that can sense these things points it out."

And that resolved that. It was always a little disturbing for him, forcing himself to look beyond someone's outer self, but there they were, as plain as day, and Gabriel couldn't help but smile at the idea. Even if his mind slowly started turning in a direction that he really didn't need to be voicing thoughts on, but like that was really his choice.

"Your father is either going to murder him slowly or make him think he's going to murder him slowly as some random point in the future and keep him in constant terror until the day he dies," Gabriel said, chuckling to himself as he lifted a hand to cover his face. "And I really didn't mean to say that out loud."

The thought of the first scenario wasn't one that Claire wanted to entertain. Even if a miscarriage would have likely gone unnoticed, the thought made her uncomfortable and she wrapped her arms around herself as a reassurance that things were fine. When Gabriel offered her a smile she felt as though a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Releasing a breath she hadn't realized she was even holding, Claire gave him a bright grin and instantly seemed to change from a frightened, worried young woman to a happy, excited mother-to-be.

"No he isn't," she replied in a light tone. Clearly she didn't even consider the idea a possibility. "My dad wouldn't want to upset me. Not to mention, I'm plenty old enough to have a child. I've been helping to raise Ben for a while now and I think Dean and I have done a pretty good job at it." Tucking a few loose strands of hair behind her ear, she turned back toward the living room.

Making her way over the couch, Claire glanced over her shoulder at Gabriel. "Relax," she said brightly as she sat, patting the spot beside her for him to sit as well. "It's not like you just blurted out that you think I'm making some horrible mistake and that Dean isn't what's best for me, or something."

Gabriel gave a nervous laugh as he walked over to sit down next to her, raising a hand to rub at the back of his neck, "Yeah. It's not like I'm saying anything like that. Because it's not like he's a good deal older than you and doesn't really seem like stable father material or anything. And it's not as thought he strikes me as the type of person who might end up freaking a few months in and look for somewhere to hide in this self contained city until he's sent back to his own reality or anything. Because it's not like that's what I'm saying or thinking at all even though it is, and I can't seem to stop myself from talking. Oh, god. I really, really, really hate this honesty thing."

Well, so much for keeping his thoughts to himself. Thank you very much, Colligo. Best to try and pull it back on track.

"Just think. In a couple of years, we'll have a whole kiddy brigade running about this place."

The humor Claire had found in the situation thus far faded almost instantly as Gabriel took his seat and began speaking. The more she listened, the less she liked what he had to say, and by the time he'd finished she had a strong urge to simultaneously burst into tears and hit him in the face with a crowbar.

Fortunately she didn't do either. Instead she simply sat there for a few seconds longer, hands clasped together tightly in her lap and her gaze on the coffee table. "You really think all of that?" she finally asked in a quiet, disbelieving tone. Frowning slightly as she peered up at him, Claire knew that he obviously did think everything he'd just said. Otherwise he wouldn't have said it. Yet she still held out the faint hope that maybe he'd figured out a way to be overly sarcastic without the honesty putting a stop to it before the words were half-formed. Or something.

Anything but the suddenly obvious, terrible truth that one of the most important people in her life wasn't half as supportive as she'd thought he was of one of the most important relationships in her life.
