WHO: Ted Lupin and Victoire Weasley
WHAT: Meeting up.
WHEN: Shortly after this.
WHERE: A coffee shop not far from the Grand Library bus station.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Victoire hurried down the street with a smile on her face and her heart thumping happily in her chest. He was here! Her Teddy had arrived. Yes, she knew he preferred being called Ted and she did her best to respect that, but she'd known him simply far too long. He would always be Teddy, first and foremost. And now he was here. Crossing the street, Victoire pointed her feet in the direction of the coffee shop. She wasn't sure how far from the shop he'd been when she'd given him the address but if he was close, she didn't want to make him wait for too long. This place could be... disorienting, upon arrival.

Stepping inside, her blond locks swaying slightly from the onslaught of cold air, she scanned the crowd. He didn't seem to be there, which she considered a good thing. Ted could handle most anything but she didn't want him having to mingle with people he didn't know while waiting for her in a strange city that contained people he'd long since believed to be dead. That was a little much to ask of anyone, even him.

Snagging a table that was out of the way, Victoire watched the door. When he entered, she couldn't help but smile as she waved him over.

Ted ordered more of whatever it was his fiance had asked for, not really caring if it was horse piss the woman brought back. His attention was focused fully on the beautiful blonde across from him. He took in every detail as if it had been ages since he'd seen her last rather than just a few short hours. The way the hair curled around her face, how a faint dimple showed at the corner of her mouth when she smiled, the way her eyes lit up when she was pleased.

God, he had it bad. So bad.

Ted reached across the table and took Victoire's hand in his, threading their fingers together. He played with the engagement ring he'd given her the year before, an Edwardian antique replica in platinum with the best quality diamond in the crown that his Auror's salary (and a bit more, thanks to his Gran's romantic tendencies) could afford. The wedding band had been designed to match it perfectly and was, at this moment, sitting in the safe at his Gran's house for safe keeping.

He sighed, looking up from the ring to his fiance's face. "Not exactly what I thought our wedding day would be like either, sweetheart," he said softly, one corner of his mouth pulling up in a humorless grin. "But we have each other. And that's the important part." Ted lifted Vic's hand to his mouth and kissed her knuckles lightly.

"How long have you been here?" he asked after a moment, running the pad of his thumb across her knuckles. "What you said, that you wished I'd show up, made it seem like you'd been here a while."

Victoire's smile seemed to grow even more, softening around the edges as her fingers were laced with his. Her gaze dropped to the engagement ring and watched as he fiddled with it. When he sighed, her gaze flickered up and caught his. She nodded in agreement at what he said before answering the question he'd asked as best she could.

"A week," she said with a slightly thoughtful frown. She squeezed his hand very gently, as though to reassure herself that he was really there. "Maybe a little more. It's hard to say, exactly." Her brow furrowed, deep lines appearing across her forehead. Victoire purposefully stopped herself and offered a faint smile.

"I found myself here just like you did," she went on to explain. "Then soon discovered that my cousins were here, along with... others." His parents. James and Lily Potter. Sirius Black. Severus Snape. She'd grown up knowing those names, learning about their sacrifices so she could live in a better world, free of most of the prejudices that they faced. Victoire sighed softly and looked back to their intertwined hands.

"I don't know how it is they're here, Ted, but I do know this is a wonderful opportunity you have," she said softly as she met his gaze. "It would be a shame for you to waste it." There was meaning in her words although it was understood she'd support him no matter what. But her own opinion was, clearly, to seize the opportunity while it was being offered.

A week? Maybe more? Ted's brow creased with confusion, eyes narrowing. "How is that even possible?" he asked. "I just saw you last night, at the rehearsal. Right before Al and Jamie dragged me off. You were laughing at me and telling me if I was late, I'd find myself a couple of non-essential body parts short." And he'd believed it too. His wife-to-be was a firecracker and damn him if he didn't adore that about her.

He listened to her and nodded, sighing softly when she talked about the opportunity he had here. He'd heard, all his life, about how brave his parents were and how much they'd loved him, loved each other. He'd heard it from everyone too. It seemed sometimes like anyone who'd ever met either of them had a story to tell and was determined to share it with him. Most of the time, he didn't mind it so much. These stories and memories shared with him by family and strangers were really all he had of his parents other than a few old photographs. But sometimes, though... Sometimes he just wanted to scream from the mountain tops that he was his own man and, whether they gave him life or not, Remus Lupin and his wife Nymphadora Tonks were strangers to him.

"I know," he said quietly after a moment's reflection. "It's just... really odd, Vic. No one exactly prepares you for something like this and I know I'm handling it badly with them, but I don't know what to expect." Normally, Ted had iron-clad control over his morphing abilities. He didn't like to stand out in the crowd, already getting more than enough attention from people once they heard of his parentage. But in times of extreme emotional turmoil, or exhaustion, his control slipped. It was slipping then, his hair darkening from the dark blond he normally kept it to a darker, mousier brown, then to black for a moment before it started to lighten again. "I don't know what I should expect. Or what they expect. I mean... I'm a grown man. Are they going to try to parent me now that I'm past that stage? Way past that stage?"

Even if Victoire didn't already know just how personal and confusing the subject of his parents tended to be, the sight of Ted's hair shifting through an array of colours certainly would have told her as much. With a soft sigh, she squeezed his hand gently and gave him a tender smile. "Oh, mon amour," she murmured lovingly. "I'm certain they're just as surprised and confused as you are, and I doubt they'll try telling you what to do."

At least, she hoped not. Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks seemed intelligent enough. She'd like to think they would realize trying to parent Ted as though he were a small child wasn't the way to handle things. Brow furrowing lightly as she thought, Victoire finally gave a semi-shrug of one shoulder.

"And if they do try, you just explain to them that you aren't a child any longer," she said matter-of-factly. She knew, of course, that it wasn't that simple but sometimes making it sound that way, helped. Besides, he wouldn't be going through it alone, no matter how it turned out. She'd be right there beside him each step of the way.

"Perhaps we should have dinner with them," she mused aloud, looking thoughtful before smiling once more at Ted. "It would be a good chance to get to know one another. Take some of the uncertainty out of the picture."

And there. Another reason why Ted Lupin thanked every deity he could think of every day that he had this wonderful, loving woman in his life. Just add that right on to the pile of reasons there.

"Dinner is a fantastic idea," he said, a smile easing the tension in his features, his hair slowly fading back to its usual color. "I'll invite them out... and apologize for being a world-class idiot."

He brought her hand back up to his lips, letting them linger in her knuckles, breathing in the scent of her skin. "As weird as this sounds, since we should, by all rights, be getting ready for our wedding... I'm glad you're here. I don't think I could handle this without you around to keep my feet on the ground."

Normally, Ted was a composed person, fully grounded in reality. You had to be, in his line of work. You had to have a good head on your shoulders and be calm under pressure. This, though... This was a different kind of stress and he needed help with it. Thank Merlin for Victoire.
