WHO: Adam Milligan and Dawn Summers
WHAT: Celebrating Dawn's birthday.
WHEN: Around 4PM.
WHERE: The ice skating rink → somewhere to eat.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Having been raised solely by his mother, there were many things that Adam had done in his admittedly short life that most other guys his age hadn't. Everything from the music he listened to, to the types of films he knew the most about, to his own hobbies, were in some way shaped by a fairly strong female influence. That wasn't to say he didn't have interests that weren't more masculine in nature. He did, of course. However he was hardly some sort of boorish brute who couldn't find some form of enjoyment in activities that likely would earn quite a bit of ridicule if other males were to learn of them.

Yet despite all of that, Adam had never been ice skating. And despite having been killed by a ghoul, threatened to the point of near-death (again) by Zachariah, and ultimately falling into Hell while still Michael's vessel, Adam had also never been more terrified of a prospect than he was of trying his luck on the ice.

It wasn't that he wasn't coordinated. He'd played enough sports - mostly a season or two before quitting simply because his mother had found it difficult to attend and he'd wound up losing interest - to know that he could at the very least walk and chew gum at the same time. No, his anxiety was far more due to the company he'd be enjoying while trying his hand at it. To put it simply, Adam liked Dawn. He was even starting to like her. Therefore the thought of humiliating himself in front of her was not something he was looking forward to doing.

Still. It was her birthday and he was bound and determined she wasn't going to spend it alone with nothing but a cupcake. He was also equally determined he would do what he could to make the day a special one for her. If that involved putting on ice skates and falling on his ass in front of complete strangers, well, then that's what he was going to do. He could only hope that she wouldn't tease him too much and, when it was all said and done, would still want to be around him.

Doing his best not to bend the envelope containing the birthday card he'd gotten for her, he leaned lightly against one of the trees in the courtyard between Buildings A and C. While waiting for her to show up, he did his best to think on other things. His dad. His brothers. His recent decision to return to college. Anything but the impending feeling of doom that he had, in regards to what he was certain was going to be an utterly humiliating experience at a sport he had no business trying his luck at. It didn't do much good, really, as his thoughts kept returning to the pretty girl who was on her way to meet with him, but by the time she came into view he'd at least managed to work past the knot in his gut and flashed her a small, sincere smile and little wave.

"Hey," he greeted her as he stepped away from the tree. Feeling suddenly awkward, he shuffled a bit then held out the card. "Uh, happy birthday."

Yeah. He might be a Winchester by blood, but by design he was a Milligan and, unfortunately, they didn't have half the natural luck with females that his dad's side of the family seemed to possess.

The warmth of her smile combined with her thanks made a little of his awkwardness fade. He still wasn't sure where to put his hands, or how to stand, or even really what to say, but the sincere semi-grin grew a bit and his own blue eyes shone brightly as he met her gaze. "You're welcome," he responded, too many years of his mother pounding manners into his head making it all but impossible for him to just shrug off the thanks with a far more casual 'don't mention it' or something equally blase.

Sliding his hands into the pockets of his jeans, he fell silent for a second and struggled with something to say. Everything that came to his mind, however, either sounded completely ridiculous or bordering on creepy. Once upon a time, he'd been able to offer a girl a compliment. Now, though, he felt so far out of the dating loop that it all seemed foreign to him. It wasn't as pointless as he'd thought it was when he'd first found himself at Colligo but he definitely felt out of both his element and league.

Finally, he settled for a simple and honest, "You look nice." The words still sounded lame to his own ears but they were sincere. So at least he had that much going for him. He hoped.

"Is this place close enough to walk?" he asked almost a split second later, glancing around as though half-expecting the ice skating rink to have appeared behind him in the few moments that he'd taken his eyes off his surroundings. When no rink was visible, he looked back to Dawn. "I mean, I've, uh, got a car, if it's easier..."
