Who: The Doctor (10) and Rose
When: About a week after the Doctor arrives.
What: Meeting up for a drink.
Where: The Park/The Pub
Status: Incomplete
Rating: TBD

He was going mad. More than that. He was in danger of going past mad and coming all the way round to being sane again. So mad he actually appeared normal, and that was always the most dangerous type of mad to be. The Doctor was a traveller, and suddenly he was stuck in one place. Not even on one planet or in one solar system. One city and one time when the days went in the right order and you couldn't even skip over the boring bits. He didn't know how humans managed it.

It was worse, in a way, that he had the TARDIS (Or a version of her, at any rate.) and yet she refused to fly. It was as if whoever had stuck them here was taunting him, playing with him. It was frustrating, and many times he'd ended up lashing out, kicking something and shouting. He had a very sore toe on his right foot where he'd kicked one of the TARDIS's new pillars, then apologized profusely to the machine while hopping around on one foot.

The Doctor sighed, flinging his head back to look up at the strange sky, his hands deep in the pockets of his trench coat as he waited for Rose to arrive. A pub... It had been a long time since he'd been in a pub. The last one he'd been to had had a bartender with eyes on the back of his head. Literally. And it had served drinks in gas form. The Doctor was pulled from this pleasant memory as he noticed a golden head hurrying towards him, and a trademark grin flashed over his face.

Rose's head went in her hands at his greeting to the barman before glancing at the people around her, giving them apologetic looks. Pretty soon they'd end up thinking she was his carer. Grinning a little she realised that in a strange sense of the way she was. He was 900 years old after all, could be classed as...

No she wasn't going to think that because then it made her being in love with him make her feel slightly ill. She was not going to fancy a pensioner. For all she knew he could be in his twenties for a Time Lord. He never really explained the age.

Thanking him for the drink, she took a sip before rolling her eyes, reaching out to pat his arm. She had to admit that seeing him so happy did make her feel happy too. And he looked gorgeous when excited. Like usual.

"Yes there is. Now drink up."

Rose patted his arm, and the Doctor smiled in her direction for a moment before plucking the little orange umbrella from his drink, sucking the drops of liquid from the stick and reaching over to tuck it nearly behind her ear, hidden in the locks of blonde hair. "There! Now you look the part."

He grinned widely at her, plucking the lemon from his drink and popping it in his mouth, extracting just the rind a moment later and letting it fall onto the table. He had never understood why people hated lemons - it wasn't like they were pears. And they made things smell clean. This pub could probably need a few more.

"Sooo..." He announced, spinning around on his chair so his body was turned to Rose, his long legs wedged between their two chairs uncomfortably. "What did the other me's tell you about what I've been up to?"

She watched him as he put the stick in his mouth, not bothering to wipe it before he put it behind her ear. If it wasn't him she would have found it disgusting, but such an act coming from the Doctor just made her laugh. But then he was putting the lemon in his mouth and she made a face just at the thought of how sour that must be. But then again, he didn't seem to taste some things the same way she did.

She sipped her drink as she watched him move, his legs brushing against her for a moment as he got comfortable. But that question just made her freeze slightly. Clearing her throat, she took another sip for courage before placing the glass back down on the table.

"A lot," she said simply, looking to him. "They told me about Davros, that Jack can't die. Never really fully explained that one though. They...They told me that you left me again. To look after the Doctor who developed from your hand."

The Doctor took a sip of his own drink, swilling the sharp liquid around his mouth for a moment before swallowing and listening to her words. His tongue came up to wedge thoughtfully into the corner of his cheek, and he tugged at his earlobe. "Oh really?" he offered. "Well... how about that."

He didn't know what to say. Which was strange for him. Usually he had too much to say and not enough time to say it in. Now there seemed to be too much time and not enough words to fill it. "I'm sorry." he finally settled on. "I didn't want to."

He turned back to his drink, taking a large gulp. He'd seen the effects of alcohol, although it had been almost 300 years since he had experienced it himself. The memories was a bit blurry. Not that they weren't before. But perhaps it would kill this awkward silence. "Then they went home?" he prompted, referring to the other versions of himself. "And you haven't met any of the other Doctors? Apart from the bow tie version?"

She shouldn't be surprised that he never said much on it, he rarely did say much on things she wanted him to talk about. But then she got an apology out of him, an admission that she never thought she would get. He didn't want her to go? Then why make her in the first place she could have still been with him.

"But you did."

It didn't matter, she really should stop focusing on it. She had him here now and she should just enjoy that while she had it. Taking a large sip of her drink to try and ignore the silence it wasn't until he spoke that she looked to him.

"They did. I've been pretty much myself since. Jack was about but I've not heard from him in a while."

"Just Jack?" The Doctor pondered, his tip of his tongue pressing against his top lip for a moment. "No' one else? But now we have the other Doctor and Amelia Pond bouncing around..." He tapped briefly on the table, before long fingers coiled around his drink and he lifted it to his lips. He frowned as he drank, eyes crossing a little as he peered at the glass he was drinking from.

"I'd have used orange," he told her, plonking the suddenly half empty drink down on the table. Somewhere deep in his jacket, his PDA gave a half-hearted beep, and although the Doctor ignored it, he did spin back to Rose, sudden elation splashing over his features. "Guess who I spoke to? Well, not spoke... messaged. Chatted with. Whatever. Guess who I met? It's brilliant"

Rose nodded, sipping more of her drink. She would have to try and find out if he was still here, really. He was being too quiet for his nature and it made her think that he wasn't here anymore. But atleast she had the Doctor now, that was enough.

Her eyes fell to his jacket when it beeped before looking back at his face when he suddenly looked overly excited. Rolling her eyes and laughing, she took another sip just to delay the inevitable. Which would be the Doctor babbling on in excitement for twenty minutes.

"I don't know, who did you meet?"

"Merlin!" He announced. "And Guinevere, and Marian and Robin Hood! Can you believe that? I mean, they're legends! Actual living, breathing legends from all over just plonked here, getting on with it. And they all know. The know people know about them, and that there's stories. This place is full of Spoilers... Its drowning in them."

He took a deep breath, letting his lungs recover from his delighted, babbling rant. It was incredible, and although he loved it, he was also aware of how wrong it was. "It's not good here," he told Rose, his tone matter of fact. "It feels like... too much time is pressed into one space. Its all too close. It makes me itch." He rotated pointed shoulders uncomfortably, minor discomfort suddenly showing on his animated face.

"Anyway," he added, only half talking to Rose now, more caught up in his own thoughts. "If the spoilers don't matter to them, why won't the Doctor tell me about the regeneration?"

She had heard they were about but hadn't really met them face to face. Maybe because she didn't want to ruin the idea of their legends by seeing them acting so normal and modern. It wasn't right. She'd just have to wait and see if she ever gets out of here and try and persuade the Doctor to let her go and visit them. If he even let her stay, since she knew that he sent her back to Bad Wolf Bay.

"Must be strange, knowing there are stories about you."

She laughed softly at his reaction, shaking her head. Of course he could sense what was wrong in time and she knew it must be awful. But at the same time he still found it exciting, she could tell he did.

"Because he'd rather you didn't know? I mean, would you like to know how you...y'know...die?"

"Die is a strong word." The doctor pointed out. After all, he didn't die. He just... changed. Although he knew, deep down, that even he didn't believe that. Technically he'd live on, but not as himself. The man he was now would, for all purposes, die.

"I'm just curious," he announced, his voice perky. He didn't want Rose to know his vague, useless wishes that if he knew, he could somehow avoid it. He was frightened, although he'd never admit it. He liked being alive. He didn't want to turn into the bow-tied, cartwheeling man of his future. At least, not quite yet. He had a feeling, from the way future him acted, that it would happen sooner than he might think.

The Doctor glanced down at his drink, before licking his forefinger and dragging it around the rim of the glass. It began to sing, a clear, gentle note that shivered through the murmurings of the pub.

"But it's sort of what happens. You may start again but that body dies," she said quietly before taking another drink. She really didn't like that thought. She didn't want him to die even if it meant he became someone new. She wanted him to stay like this and the fact he didn't know how things happened meant it could happen any time.

Her eyes fell to the glass when he ran his finger over it before she finished her drink. This was meant to be fun, a nice time together just like how things were when they travelled. But she couldn't help but think there was something different between them. Then again, perhaps since the last time she saw him to his memory, or so she thinks, he had heard her say those three words. Words that she still felt to this day and found it hard to forget.

"I'm going to get another drink."

He didn't have anything to say to that. Rose knew him too well. She must be able to tell he wasn't completely comfortable spending so much time with the man who would replace him. He was sure she felt the same. But what could he do about it? There was no avoiding it, and he just hoped he had enough time left as himself to do something... worthwhile. Something to make this version of himself memorable. He didn't want to fade away, to become another in a line of old, tired faces.

He was pulled from his thoughts as Rose announced she was getting another drink. It was hard to get the Doctor out of his own head sometimes. Especially as he grew older and older. There was so much going on in there he could literally slip into his own thoughts for hours, days, and fall back to reality to find the sun set. Bracing long legs on the floor, he pushed his chair back to allow space for her to pass, craning his neck to meet her eye.

"It's going to be okay, you know." he pointed out, his expression gentle and laced with meaning, his voice carrying a lot more conviction that he really felt. Even the Doctor wasn't sure what he meant. Their escape from Colligo, his imminent regeneration... her being left alone once again. Perhaps a bit of each.

She smiled a little when he moved so she could walk past. Standing, she had not even moved a step when he spoke. Her eyes stayed on his for a moment as she thought about what he said and took in the look on his voice. She hadn't a clue what he was referring to, there were so many things to be concerned about, but she believed him. She always did. Right to the very core of her body she believed in him and everything he said. Because she trusted and loved him more than anyone else.

Loved. She loved him when they were travelling and she loved him now. And she didn't know if it was that thought or that one single glass that had her lowering and pressing her lips to his. Though she couldn't blame the vodka, there wasn't nearly enough of it to make her anywhere near tipsy. But she was just pulled to him, she always was. When she fully came to her senses she lifted her head and removed her lips from his.

"I know," she said softly before walking to the bar.

What the hell had she just done? What possessed her to do it? It seemed the right thing to do then but he wasn't an ordinary man. What if he thought it totally inappropriate. Signalling to the barman she ordered another vodka and coke before quickly asking for a shot of vodka. God she needed it.

He was looking up at her, craning his neck a little to compensate for the angle. Then, suddenly, Rose was swooping down and her lips were pressed hard to his. The Doctor blinked, a look of mild confusion crumpling his brow before he seemed to shrug and lean into it, his own eyes closing. But then she was gone, and he was left looking a little gormlessly at the piece of air she'd just vacated.

"Huh." He managed, turning over this new development in his head for a moment. A careful expression crossed his face as he settled back into his seat, tongue wedged thoughtfully into the corner of his cheek. Then, slowly, a smug, slightly arrogant grin ripped his features, and he swung his legs up to rest on the table, crossed at the ankles. "Huh." he said again, sounding more than a little pleased with himself.

The Time Lord twisted to look at Rose, who was still by the bar. He smirked, one solid eyebrow quirking upwards as he waited for her to re-approach. Someone was giving him a 'look' as he rested his grass-stained converse on the table, but he didn't seem to notice.

After what turned out to be two shots of vodka, she lifted the glass of vodka and coke and paid the man for each drink. She could hold her drink quite well so she had no problem of becoming drunk in front of him. Not yet anyway. If she kept going the way she did then yes she would have to be carried home. She went to glance back at the Doctor but decided not to. She just needed another minute to come to terms with what she had done.

But he had responded...He had kissed her back even for a second his lips had been pressed back against hers. Did that mean something? Surely if he didn't want her to he would have pulled back, just as he tried to do when her mother kissed him in greeting once. And he may not be human but no one she knew responded to a kiss without wanting to do exactly that. Taking a sip of the vodka and coke, glad of the coke that made the vodka burn her throat less than the vodka on it's own in the shot glass did, she turned. And stopped.

He was staring at her. He was smirking and staring at her. Smug bastard. He enjoyed that for the wrong reasons then. he responded because it made him feel good to know she wanted him like that. Loved him as much as she did. Bloody, smug, gorgeous bastard.

Taking a deep breath, she walked back to the table and squeezed past him to her to the seat she had occupied before she left.

"Bloody murder up there," she muttered quietly even though she knew there were only, at most, four people currently sitting at the bar.

The Doctors grin grew as she approached, head tilting a little as his dark eyes flashed. She was carrying another drink, although he was quite sure she'd helped herself to a few more while her back was turned. The smell of alcohol burnt a little in his nostrils, which picked up most things a little better than Rose. The Doctor could tell you how much hydrogen and oxygen was in a planets atmosphere with a single breath, could tast the minerals cradled in the soil in a blade of grass. Only right now he could smell alcohol. And the syrup of the coke. And Rose.

He swung his feet down briefly from where they rested on the table, letting the blonde squeeze past to reach her seat. And as she sat down, complaining about the quite frankly deserted bar, he placed his legs back on the wooden tabletop, and he watched her. She was nervous. You could more ofrless see how the chemicals and adrenaline danced through her system, bringing blood to her cheeks in a pleasant flush of colour.

But, he reminded himself, things were no different here. Not really. He was over nine hundred years old, and she would age faster than him anyway. The only thing that was different here was that they were stuck here, and he had to remember it.

"You kissed me," he finally commented, although the tone was wrong. Careful. Considerate. He might as well have been posed with a difficult maths question or a new planet to consider. His voice suggested, it was just that. A fact, and he just had to work out why it was as it was.

He wouldn't stop grinning. Normally that would make her laugh and join him but right now she just wanted to glare at the way he was acting. She knew he would be able to tell what she was feeling, his Time Lord senses would tingle or whatever. He always was too good at knowing if she was hiding things after all. Perhaps he just knew her, but she was well aware of those abilities he had that made him show off.

His feet moved from their resting place for a moment but once she had sat they were back. Sipping her drink she let her eyes pass around the bar as she felt his eyes on hers. It wasn't really until he spoke, with such a tone that made her want to kiss and strangle him at the same time, that her eyes fell on him again.

She had so many responses to that. The way he had said it, the statement itself. She could ignore it and pretend she didn't hear him or maybe just shrug and change the subject. Or she could apologise but no way was she doig that. But then, before she knew what she was saying, the part of their short kiss that stayed in her mind was blurted out.

"You kissed me back." Her tone was almost the same as his. No accusations. Just a simple statement that he could not deny.

"Yeeees," he pondered. A woman glared at him, and he looked back, lost in his own thoughts until he seemed to snap back to reality. With a guilty grin, he swung his legs off the table, tucking the long limbs away under his chair as the elderly barmaid snorted and looked away.

He decided, in a flash, that it would be best to pretend that brief kiss hadn't happened. It was hard enough here, and he had to leave eventually. He knew from experience how hard it was to say goodbye to Rose, and he knew he was barely strong enough to go through it again. Who knew what would happen if he allowed himself to... well...

She would have to go back to the place she was supposed to be sooner or later - he couldn't imagine what mess they were making across the void just by sitting here together. No. Better to leave it. Things were bad enough. And he head learnt his lesson when it came to getting too attached. They all had to leave in the end.

Reaching for his drink, the Doctor's tone was almost painfully lighthearted. It was a voice that quite clearly said the topic was closed. "The people who come here..." he asked, his eyes fixed on the glass. "Are they all... different? Special?"

She followed his legs to the ground, gazing at the woman who had made him do so. Because suddenly something had changed, she could feel it, and she didn't want to look at him. Despite what he may occasionally think, she knew him too well. She knew he wouldn't take the initiative, and she knew he would push the kiss away as something friends did. She hadn't travelled with him and learnt nothing.

And when he started to talk she knew she was right. And it made her know where she stood now. Someone that he cared for as a close friend, best friend maybe. But that was it. And she just had to accept that and it seemed, when she took a large sip of her drink, that getting drunk would be the first step to accepting it.

"You mean people who come to Colligo? I don't know if we're all special, most of us seem to just be normal people with maybe one or two things not so normal about them." Her tone stayed neutral, not wanting to let go of things as easily as he did. And after all, she wasn't really special, unless you included all those things she had done with the Doctor the two years she was with him.

The Doctor spun on his chair, sitting on it sideways so he faced her. His elbow dropped to rest on his knee, his sharp chin balanced in the cup of his palm. A serious, thoughtful expression had taken him over as he absently ran his tongue over his teeth, glad for something new to think about that would push recent events to the back of his mind. "Well, there must be something. Me... You.. Merlin, Robin, Guinevere... It's like a museum. Colligo..." He tasted the name of the city on his tongue. "It's well named, I'll give them that. Awwhh.."

A familiar broad grin blossomed, and he stared across at Rose, suddenly happy. "It is good though, isn't it? I mean. Bad, but good. Another drink?" He jumped to his feet, knocking the table a little clumsily as he forced his lanky frame up to its full height. He was strangely glad to get away. The Doctor may not have been the most aware person when it came to groups and feelings, but even he could pick up on the funny atmosphere which had suddenly arrived at the table.

Striding over to the bar, he once again brought the flats of his hands down on the wooden surface, taking a deep breath of alcohol-rich air. The memory of the kiss played over him, before he forced it back. There was over five centuries between them in age, even if you didn't consider the species difference. The whole thing was, in complete honesty, ridiculous. "Same again, please."

She scoffed a little when he mentioned her as an example amongst all those people. The Doctor, well, he had his own area of special. The others mentioned were legends so of course they were special. She took another drink, all but draining the contents, before dropping her gaze to him at the grin on his face. Ah here it came. And despite her foul mood she gave a little smile.

"Yeah. Bad but good." At his question she simply nodded before watching him leave the table. She really should have offered to go herself, could have gotten a few more shots.

No. No that was a bad idea. Tipsy in front of the Doctor was okay. Blind drink was not. She'd just wait until she got home to do that. Find something to do and drown herself in whatever alcohol she may have. That was the Tyler way of dealing with things after all.

The Doctor finished off his drink more quickly than he'd meant to, throwing it back easily so it burnt the back of his mouth and pooled heavily in his stomach. At around that time, a crowd of people pushed their way through the door, shouting and clamoring, pushing to the bar. The Doctor watched with a mild curiosity, with the air of someone hooked on a nature documentary or an exhibit in a zoo. A small smile curled the corners of his mouth. He did love humans.

"Ready to go?" He suddenly turned back to Rose, a bright smile lodged in place. "I don't want to be away from the TARDIS too long. She's parked under trees and birds keep... well.." He quirked an eyebrow playfully, though there was a note of the serious there. The Doctor was almost painfully overprotective of that blue box.

Her eyes went between the Doctor and her table, not really knowing what to do. She had assumed he would stay with her, or come back, but he was downing his drink with surprising ease. Then people were leaving and the Doctor was looking back at her, that grin back in place. At his question she nodded and finished the rest of her drink before standing and grabbing her bag.

"Sure," she said, laughing softly at his reason for going. "I'm sure she'll be fine. And it's your fault for parking her there. With that, she shook her head and nodded at the door as she began to walk to it. "Come on then."

She had a feeling this was how it was going to be; back to normal. The kiss would be long forgotten by him and she would just have to do the same.
