Who: Guinevere and Merlin
When: Early evening
Where: About...Trying to find an alehouse
What: Getting drunk after just one or two?
Status/Rating: Incomplete/TBA

Gwen had managed to get herself into one of these dresses but had also but her seamstress skills to work. They were slightly less constricting and a lot less billowing. It wasn't amazing but it was the best she could do. The amount of fabric she managed to get from making one of those dresses better was astounding. She could have made another skirt, perhaps two, with it.

She stretched before leaning against the wall, waiting for Merlin. Of course she had said she would use this opportunity to see what was going on with Merlin but she did genuinely want some time with her friend. It had been too long.

"Alright." Merlin shrugged and fell into step beside her. He was nervous about going into the town too. Just a little -- because Wyatt had talked him down from the whole burning at the stake thing, and he realized he'd been stupid. Merlin wasn't really sure what to say to Gwen either. To be honest, he had been avoiding her and Arthur a little, avoiding seeing them together, and had no desire to bring up the topic of the two of them.

"I started a garden on the side of the house...This time is kind of boring compared to the other one."

She didn't want to bring everything up, ask him what was wrong. Not just yet anyway. She would wait until they were wherever they ended up and they try to talk to him. She was worried that if she asked him now he would just end up walking away from her. And she had a feeling he wouldn't abandon her in an alehouse. Well she hoped he wouldn't.

"A garden? That must be fun. And yes there's not nearly enough to do now. It's almost like Camelot, though. But...I guess we were always busy back home."

"It's nice. My mother gardens, she taught me to get plant clippings, and use them in a garden. It would've been easier if they just brought us back to Camelot though, there was always something to do." And he missed being back home where things made sense. Gaius was there if he was in trouble, his mother wasn't far, Lancelot would be there, and he could just go back to taking care of Arthur like he used to where it was less complicated.

"I like how you fixed your dress. I don't know how the people here stand so much fabric, or do anything without the miles of dress getting in the way."

She nodded, watching him as he spoke. She could imagine how relaxing it must be, she knew many did find something like that relaxing. She definitely agreed when him when he said they should just be taken back to Camelot. Not that she fully hated it here, but some of it was very annoying.

"Oh thank you. Sometimes being a seamstress comes in handy. And I agree, there are far too many pieces of fabric in the way with those dresses."

"I took Arthur's and my clothes to a tailor in town when we arrived so it's not too bad. I took one of Morgana's dresses too, but I forgot to ask if she wanted the rest to be fixed." He shrugged slightly. "I was going to ask you too, but it looks like you can do it yourself better."

"I was going to get us groceries too. I miss the refrigerator thing already though. No ice cream, or stocking up for a week or two, or cold milk in the middle of the night." Technically he could make it cold himself, little magic tricks, but still...

"Well that was kind of you," she said with a smile. "And I don't mind you didn't ask me, I was fine with fixing it myself. If you ever need anything else fixed just let me know"

She glanced around, keeping a look out for anywhere they could go. She smiled up at him, nodding. She understood exactly, and really was missing all the convenience of the things they had before.

"Why don't we try over there?" she asked when she spotted what looked like a relatively quiet alehouse.

"It's weird, I guess. I wasn't the greatest servant, but doing little chores for Arthur has kind of become habit. Even if it annoys him when I do it here, taking care of little things like clothes or food, it gives me something to do, and it's something familiar." Merlin shrugged slightly, not sure if she'd understand. As for the conveniences, he'd miss them, but they would manage - Maybe even better then many other people here because they didn't have that experience.

"Okay." He glanced over at the tavern, holding the door open for Gwen, before claiming a corner table for them. Merlin looked around, not sure what to order. He'd never really been drinking beyond a few stolen sips of wine at some of the feasts in Camelot, and never enough to get anything but a pleasant sort of warmth from it.

"You were a brilliant servant, Merlin, I'm sure of that. Arthur would not have kept you as his if you were not good at it."

She nodded a little, knowing that he had taken to keeping up with all his little jobs. It annoyed her at first, since she was more than capable to help with Arthur, but the more it happened the more she got used to it.

She followed Merlin, thanking him for holding the door, sitting opposite him. It wasn't all that busy in here and she was glad of that, and she smiled at Merlin.

"It's strange being in a tavern like back in Camelot."

"I think he kept me because I entertained him, and we had a habit of saving each other's lives." Merlin got better at being a servant, sure, but mostly he was rubbish. Merlin assumed it was mostly because he treated Arthur like a normal person and friend most of the time, not just a prince.

"I didn't go in the taverns much. I would just sneak little sips from the wine when there were feasts..." Merlin admitted, shrugging his shoulders slightly. He was just responsible for filling Arthur's cup during banquets, and no one noticed if a little went missing through the night, or that Merlin would be in an increasingly good mood even when the people around him became easily riled.

The woman that wandered to their table looked to him expectantly to order drinks, and he glanced at Gwen for direction until just asking for two pints of ale. It was obviously an acceptable answer because she gave a nod and disappeared.

"He likes you Merlin, there's no doubt about it. Not just because yoou're his servant. You're his friend, someone he can trust. That's what someone really wants in a servant, I suppose."

She smiled at him, trying to reassure him. Maybe if he became comfortable enough in her presence he would be willing to tell her what was bothering him. She laughed a little when he admitted sipping wine at the feasts.

"I don't know a servant who didn't do that. And I only really went into taverns when I had to go get my father. I went to the...places they had here when it was in the future a few times out of curiousity though."

She nodded when Merlin ordered the drinks, not minding his choice.

"I'm really tired of that word." He grumbled. "He likes to use that a lot. Ever since he found out about my magic -- Everything is a question of do I trust him, why don't i trust him, why didn't I trust him...For someone who shares so little with me, he acts like every thought and feeling I don't tell him is a lie and breech of his trust. No matter how many times I try and say I do, it's just there are some things I can't talk to him about."

It drove him absolutely mad because Arthur didn't exactly sit and have heart to hearts with him. Hell, he didn't even realize Gwen and Arthur were living together until he noticed he was frequently picking up her clothes with Arthur's. Anything he said or didn't say was a lie though.

She frowned a little but didn't stop him. Perhaps she was getting somewhere already. He didn't think Arthur trusted him? Perhaps something had happened between them that she wasn't aware of. She smiled as the ale got delivered to them, pulling out some coins that she hoped would be fine before looking back to Merlin.

"He has issues with who he can trust and finds it hard to speak his feelings. I am sure he more than likely worries that we will go against him. And if you can't talk to him perhaps you can talk to me? You use to be able to easily in Camelot."

She remembered the day he sought her opinion before he done anything.

"I know. I know he does, and I'm fine with that. I've learned to decipher Arthur-speak for I'm worried about you, and I'd like your company. I even sort of appreciate the immediate dislike he seems to have of any friend I make here because I'm pretty sure that just means he's looking out for me." Merlin trusted people a little too easily. It wasn't something he could help. Making friends always came easily to him, and for all the people he'd come across that wanted him or Arthur dead he still had this natural instinct to trust strangers. Arthur was suspicious for him, and it was nice.

"It doesn't change the fact that he practically demands to know things I'm not ready to tell him, and gets upset when I can't."

He looked to Gwen for a minute as she suggested talking to her. It was true mostly, the only trouble is that the thing he was struggling with the most would very much impact her, and he suspected she would tell Arthur. Of course, she would only be trying to help or something, but he would find out all the same. Still, he couldn't just refuse either.

Merlin stole a few more seconds of silence on the subject by starting on his drink...Which was not at all what he'd expected, and he made a face at the amber liquid for a second before swallowing it down. "That is nothing like the wine I would try."

"He isn't too great at speaking plainly, is he?" she said with a light laugh. "And yes, I'm sure you're right. He likes to look out for us, you in particular."

She nodded again, completely understanding how he felt when it came to this. Arthur could be rather hypocritical at times; making them tell him how they felt or what they were thinking but keeping his own thoughts and feelings to himself.

"And you've explained all this to him?" She wouldn't be surprised if he had and Arthur still demanded. It could be annoying, but she knew he cared.

She copied him, taking a sip of the ale, her nose scrunching a little. This tasted different to anything she had ever tried before, but she would deal with it. She had it now.

"Yes there's certainly something different about it."

"I've tried explaining it to him, but it's Arthur - I sort of understand because I have kept things from him, big things, and I suppose I can't blame him for not trusting me. It's not like to do it out of spite though, I have reasons - good reasons, most of the time. But now he's just making up his own conclusions because I won't tell him. He's got it in his head that I'm ignoring all of you because I don't spend time in the house. I just like to keep busy is all, especially lately with everything changing again." Merlin slouched in the chair and took another drink. The ale tasted strange, but not totally awful. It was something he could get used to, and the effects were quicker then sips of wine.

'But it's Arthur' did seem like a good explanation. He was very difficult to talk to, and could be rather hypocritical at times. Not that she didn't adore him, she just knew he found it difficult to speak his own mind and didn't like it when things were kept from him.

"So you're not ignoring us? You obviously understand that Arthur is the type to automatically think the worse, right?" she asked, taking another sip of the ale. She could already feel herself getting braver because of the alcohol.

"No. No. I just - It's not like I go out of my way to stay away. There is just only so much you can do inside, and I like to go out to explore, and I like meeting the people here." Merlin didn't want them to think that. He really liked to think there was a difference between actively avoiding them, and well -- He would be out and about, and just wouldn't see them very often. Even if he was okay with that because individually was fine, it was just seeing Arthur and Gwen together that kind of upset him.

Merlin finished the first drink, and after a moment of thinking they weren't really very good -- He ordered another. They tasted a little better the more he drank, after all, and talking to Gwen about all this was getting a little easier.

She nodded, understanding that aspect. The house was slightly boring now, there wasn't much you could do if you stayed inside. Sipping more of her ale, she frowned when she noticed she was nearly finished it. When did she drink that much of it?

"I guess you're right. Though we could do things together inside."

She didn't know what, just...something.
