WHO: Marv and OPEN
WHAT: Drinking up a storm.
WHEN: 10:40pm.
WHERE: A random hole in the wall bar.
RATING: Opener is PG-13, might increase to R if someone tags in. Marv has a foul mouth.
STATUS: In Progress, or complete if no one tags.

There may not have been enough alcohol in any world to get Marv drunk, but there he was, dutifully trying anyway. He’d spent a long time barhopping, looking for just the right place, and he’d almost given up hope of finding a place. He’d been kicked out of several bars for fighting, though it would be more accurate to state that he’d been kicked out of several bars for breaking hands when male customers got a little too grabby with waitresses or bartenders. He’d finally found a job at his new watering hole, The Bridge, and it was just his kind of place. The kind of place where you could smoke like a chimney, drink like a fish, and as long as you had the money – or the benefit of being a quickly-becoming-favored employee – to keep the firewater flowing, no one said word one to you.

Marv had been part of the owner’s attempt to change things at the rowdy establishment, and it had worked pretty well. Now that Marv was here, you did not touch the waitresses unless you wanted to end up at the hospital with a broken hand. In fact, even insulting the waitresses could earn your face an up-close-and-personal meeting with your table before your ass met the ground out front. This did tend to keep the misogynists and first-timers away, but the bar had enough regulars to support it and the regulars, by and large, liked Marv. He was a friendly guy, quick with a story and quicker to high five someone for their awesome stories. He also dispensed advice to people that needed it, and his fervently loyal nature was becoming more widely known. At the same time, you didn’t want to get too close to Marv, because he looked big and mean and scary and if you caught him in the right mood and gave him the right motivation, he was all of those things.

Tonight he was off. That didn’t mean he wasn’t there, he just wasn’t working. Instead he was perched precariously on a bar stool that looked horrendously small for his seven foot tall, bulky-as-all-hell frame, his right elbow propped up on the bar with a cigarette pinched between the index and forefinger of his right hand. In front of him were about six empty beer bottles, and next to those was one empty bottle of Jack Daniels. Clutched in his left hand, the lid on the bar, was another bottle of Jack Daniels, this one half empty. The regulars were watching him without trying to seem like they were. Everyone here was curious just how much alcohol it would take to get Marv drunk, though no one was really sure if a drunken Marv was such a good thing.

Marv knew they were watching. He didn’t care. This was his thinking place. And his party place. And his work place. And his drinking place. Okay, this place was pretty much his everything place. He was wearing his usual, a muscle shirt – he refused to call it a wifebeater, and glared nastily at anyone who did so in his presence – leather pants, heavy boots, and a damn fine leather coat. This one had survived longer than most. He’d acquired a new gun, and while she wouldn’t replace Gladys, Nikki would serve him just fine here. She was a big bear of a handgun, something most people would probably find unwieldly, but she fit his hand like a dream and for a man of his strength the recoil was negligible. She came with him everywhere, though he didn’t make that fact known. Somehow, he had a feeling that those geeks in tights would have something to say about it, and Marv didn’t feel like dealing with a bunch of nerds in pajamas right now.

He was clearly thinking pretty heavily today. He took a long puff on his cigarette and followed it up by gulping down a quarter of what was left in the remaining bottle of JD. He was going through the motions, his body on autopilot as his mind tried to work over some problem or another. Marv didn’t often share his inner thoughts with people. He’d be free with advice, he’d be free with stories of awesome fights, but he would not be free with his actual inner thoughts. What was he thinking about? No one knew. It only added to his mystique.

Marv heard the cough and turned his head, more out of curiosity than anything. Most people that came into a place like this knew what they were getting into and were pretty capable of dealing with the smoke. The fact that someone wasn't was curious, and it caught his attention for a flash of a second.

Then he saw her. She was clearly trying not to freak out, or at least it was clear to Marv's eyes, and she seemed confused. This was a situation that required his attention. He took just a moment to put out the cigarette and toss it in a trash can as he rose. Some of the regulars did the same, afraid he would be pissed off if they didn't. He left the bottle of Jack on the bar, not forgotten but currently no longer important.

He approached the girl slowly, hands held up in a passive gesture. "Hey, you okay, darlin'?" He knew he probably looked pretty scary, his sloped brow and scarred face giving off a very brutish, caveman vibe. His height and general muscular bulk didn't help. But his eyes were soft, and he was doing his best to grin disarmingly. "You lost," he asked her, as he got closer.

Echo looked as the man approached. His face looked odd, but his eyes reminded her of Dr. Saunders and... somebody else.

"I'm thirsty," she explained, hoping that would solve the problem. "Is something burning?"

Hm. Okay, maybe she was a little younger than she looked. Or maybe she was from a reality where she got artificially aged, or...something. Marv wasn't quite sure. Either way, the fact that she didn't understand cigarettes meant that she wasn't quite as old mentally as she looked physically.

That was fine. People often said that about Marv. He kept up the disarming grin and reached out, not touching her but getting his hand close to keep her attention focused on him. "Burnin'? Nah. Some folks like to smoke cigarettes, which are really bad for ya and ya shouldn't do it."

"Well, I can solve that thirst problem for ya," he told her, smiling. "C'mon, right this way. An' don't pay any of them folks no mind." He began guiding her, very slowly and gently, towards the bar. He usually would've hollered to the bartender to have a bottle of water ready for her, but he had a feeling yelling would just panic her worse. He'd wait and ask her what she wanted once they got up there. As he led her up, he decided to try and ask a few simple questions to see if he could get some information out of her. "You here with anyone, sweetheart?"

After his question, she looked at the door. No, there wasn't anybody with her. "No, I'm here alone. I was wandering and I got thirsty."

She felt better having somebody talking to her. It felt safer, more structured. Although she still didn't get what cigarettes were, but she was fairly sure she didn't like them.

Okay, maybe that hadn't been the right question. He thought it over and tried again. "How 'bout in the city? Do ya have any friends in the city?" He didn't want the poor girl wandering around with no one to take care of her. He still hadn't decided exactly what the cause was, but it was pretty clear that she was either mentally much younger, or she had smoked the strongest pot Marv had ever even heard of. Or maybe whoever brought them all here had altered her somehow.

They reached the bar, and he quickly pulled the stool next to his out for her. "You can have a seat here, an' just tell the nice man what ya want to drink. We got water, pretty sure we got some soda, uh...water, soda, we probably got some milk back there if ya want some of that..." He nudged his empty bottles off the bar, and put the cap on his remaining bottle of Jack. Definitely didn't want her getting into that.

He half-sat in his own stool, but he didn't want to sit all the way down until she did. He wanted to make sure she was comfortable, and if she wasn't and took off, he wanted to be able to hop up and get after her right away.

Echo sat down, frowning slightly as she did. She was used to more ergonomically friendly chairs (not that she knew what that meant).

"Water," she said simply as she thought about what he had asked. "No, I don't have any friends here," she frowned slightly. She remembered friends, she knew she would recognize one once she saw one, but she couldn't actually remember what any of them looked like, or their names. Two images floated in front of her eyes. A man and a woman, but she couldn't remember anything more. "But I have some people looking after me. Dr. Saunders takes care of me, and Topher... I don't know."

Dr. Saunders. Okay, there was a name he recognized. Normally, this was the point where Marv would've been typing out a message on his PDA to alert Dr. Saunders that someone that knew her was here. However, something didn't sit quite right with him about all this. He knew Dr. Saunders wasn't telling him everything. Hell, he knew she was probably telling him less than one percent of everything. He'd been fine with that when he thought it was just a personal thing, but clearly there was someone else involved now, someone else that might have been hurt, and if this Topher guy that Saunders had him keeping an eye on was involved in it... That cold thing in his gut was going again, and nothing good ever came of ignoring it.

So instead of typing out a message alerting her, Marv instead pulled out his PDA and started typing a different message. It was still directed at Dr. Saunders, but it wasn't a heads up. He really felt like he needed some answers before he could determine what the right thing to do here was.

"Dr. Saunders and Topher, huh?" He smiled a little. "Well, just so happens I know Doc Saunders. Ain't exactly sure if we're friends, but we're friendly at least." Marv was fervently hoping Saunders' answers, if they came at all, didn't change that. "Topher I don't know, though." He considered asking more about Topher, but decided not to, for the moment.

Instead he changed tack again. "Oh, oh hey, my mom would be so pissed at me, forgettin' my manners like this," he chuckled. "I'm Marv, pleased to meetcha. You got a name, sweetheart?"

"I'm Echo," she said helpfully, as the bartender handed her a glass of water. She took a sip, and made a slight face. It wasn't as clean as she was used to. "Dr. Saunders is nice. She helps me when I get hurt. You can trust her."

"Echo," Marv repeated, smiling. "That's a pretty name." He saw the face she made and caught the bartender with a wave. "Hey, hey Pete, give her the good water, the bottled stuff, not that crappy tap water ya give to newbies. An' put it on my tab." He grinned as Pete gaped at him and then tromped off to get Echo some bottled water. In a hushed whisper that only Echo would be able to hear, Marv said, "He thought I didn't know 'bout that. But don't worry, you're gonna get the good stuff now."

He considered what she'd said. The picture he was getting from Echo, combined with what he was getting from Dr. Saunders, was beginning to take a definitive shape. "Yeah, I think I can. She's real nice." Topher, on the other hand, he wasn't sure about. In fact he was less sure now than he had been before. He really needed to know what Topher did there, but he was going to try and find out from Dr. Saunders first. Echo had already said she didn't know how to describe Topher, and Marv didn't want to push. "So hey, ya said you don't have any real friends in the city? That's a da," he hesitated just slightly and corrected himself, "darn shame. Everybody should have a friend around if they need 'em." He considered it for just a moment and then decided to give it a shot. "Do ya want a friend here? 'Cause I don't got any real friends here either."

"Well then you an' me are friends now," he said, with the sort of silly finality a child might. It was partially for her benefit, but also partially his own thought process. He watched her for a moment, noting the frown. "Hey, everything alright?" He was concerned for her, especially with the picture he was piecing together in his mind.

"I'm not sure," Echo confessed. "This place. It's not familiar. I feel like it should be. Like... I always wake up in the same place, with the same people. But when I try to remember that place, or those people... I can't think of them."

Mentally, Marv was sighing. He'd gotten the story out of Dr. Saunders, and while he was glad this wasn't a situation where he was going to have to kill some people, it was definitely not a situation he particularly liked. He wasn't sure why someone would volunteer for something like this, but because she was a volunteer, he had no right to screw with their operation.

Still. He wanted to help...and really, if Topher never got his equipment back then they would have to let Echo develop naturally, unless they wanted to follow her around and make sure she didn't get herself hurt. Marv might not have minded it, but he doubted most normal people would want to do that. "Well." He gave it another moment's thought before continuing. "Y'know what I do when I got somethin' I wanna remember? I try to think about how I felt at the time, or match it up with a smell. An' if there's somethin' goin' on that I wanna remember, I try to put it in a little song. Sounds kinda silly, but it works."

Echo nodded and squinted her eyes in concentration. She tried to remember a smell, but all she could do was smell the smoke. It reminded her of something though... roaring engines, deisel smoke, and a bright red motorcycle.

Echo was snapped out of her reverie by the bartender bringing her a bottle of water. "Hey, can I get a tequila sour and a shot of jack? Thanks, darling." She turned back to Marv. "So, where were we?"

That thing in his gut twisted and Marv knew, just knew that something weird had just happened. It was confirmed a second later, when she opened her mouth and asked for something that he was damn sure a girl in a fairly childlike state of mind wouldn't ask for.

But something told him he wasn't quite informed enough to try and undo whatever had just happened, so instead, he decided on a plan that was probably a little riskier. He was going to roll with it.

The bartender looked at him and Marv chuckled and shrugged. "Hey, what ya lookin' at me for, man? You heard the lady." Then he turned his head back to her. "We were talkin' 'bout...uh, my teacher in third grade called 'em...something long that none of us third graders understood," he laughed. "Memory aids. An' how ya couldn't remember your friends real well." This was a risky plan. Realistically, Marv could have thrown her over his shoulder and carried her out, but he didn't want to manhandle a lady. He would let Dr. Saunders know about this, though.

"Oh right, like how the smoke in this place reminds me of the motorcycle Matt got me, Oh! It's so gorgeous! Lipstick red, purs like a kitten, roars like a tiger." Echo drifted off slightly, a dreamy look in her eye as she thought about her wonderful boy friend.

Motorcycles. Okay, this was definitely not what he'd expected. He had a feeling this wasn't something that was supposed to happen normally. "Sounds like a helluva bike," Marv chuckled, and it really did, even if he preferred the older Harleys. And he usually liked black or dark blues for bikes, though red wasn't bad. Reminded him of Dwight's caddy, and that was a beautiful sight. "So, Matt's either your boyfriend or hopin' to be."

He was going to have to try and roll with the punches. His first priority was to get informed. Marv really wanted to know just what type of person she'd switched into. It would help him determine what the best course of action here was, and how to handle her in this new personality.

"Yeah, Matt's great. I know it's early in our relationship, but I really think he's 'the one.' Only I haven't had a chance to talk to him about it before we ended up here. Hey!" she brightened up as she had a thought. "Do you suppose the bike is here? I mean, a lot of people got their cars, right? Maybe his bike is around. I'd love to at least have something to remind me of him."

"Well," Marv replied, finally comfortable taking a swig of his own bottle of Jack again, "if ya want my two cents, any guy that gets ya a bike at least has his heart in the right place." Okay, so this "imprint" was probably for this Matt guy. Pretty standard lonely guy fantasy, Marv had his own personal variation that he'd cherished for many, many years. True love at first sight. Marv had come close with Goldie, though he was under no delusions about why she'd been there, with him.

Marv cocked his head to consider that. "Y'know I s'pose it could be! Can't hurt to look, right?" Almost immediately after that, he added, "'Course, two pairs of eyes is better than one, an' I sure as shit ain't got nothin' to do tonight. Ya want some help?"

"Yeah, help would be great. Just a sec." She grabbed the tequila sour from the bartender and chugged it quickly. Then grabbed the jack and drained it as well, slamming the shot glass on the table. "Woo! Alright, let's head outta here. Where do you think we should look first?"

"Damn, girl," Marv laughed, impressed at how well this particular imprint drank. He didn't put down the bottle. He'd paid for the entirety of the thing, he wasn't going to leave it here. "Hmm." He thought about it for a second. "Well, hey, hold on, check your PDA. Maybe ya got a message in there 'bout the bike?" He shrugged his massive shoulders. "If ya ain't got anything there, we can check the lots an' the garages. Seems like the best shot there."

"Well, then I guess we'll just haveta look, right?" Marv gave a nod of goodbye to the bartender and rose from the stool. "First place we're gonna wanna check is probably the lots. Think some people that got their cars back found 'em there. After that, we can hit up garages and see if they got anything in there for ya." This didn't really seem too bad. He figured there could possibly have been worse personalities for her to slip into.

Marv tried not to look surprised at the physical contact, though he wasn't sure if he was entirely successful. It was a pleasant surprise, though. While he wasn't at all used to kindness of any real kind, the folks here - the ones that had been pulled here, at least - were pretty nice, all around. So he'd started to get used to that. Physical contact, though, was still a very rare and prized thing for him. He liked this imprint, he decided. She was friendly and didn't mind his scarred up, ugly mug.

He followed her tugging, changing his course appropriately. "Sounds good to me, darlin'." He grinned down at Echo, her friendly mood catching. "So tell me 'bout this Matt guy. What's he like?" He made sure not to make the question too specific. He wasn't sure how thorough these imprints were, so he didn't want to ask questions that she couldn't answer. So instead he decided to keep them vague. Marv may not have been smart, but he could be surprisingly clever, sometimes.

"Oh, he's great." she said as she lead him down the street. "I know what you're thinking. 'He's rich, what's not to like?' But it's not about the money. There's just this personal connection, like a light that just clicked." Echo paused for a moment. She tried to think of more ways to describe Matt, but she couldn't think of any, of why she felt the way she did for him. "I mean, I haven't known him that long, but there's this chemistry."

Marv listened to what she said, nodding along with it towards the end. "Ain't gotta justify that one to me, darlin'. Had the same thing happen, once upon a time." Goldie. It still caused him some pain, and a bit of it might have shown on his face, but he didn't go into details. "Fuck all those people that think love's somethin' that has to happen over a long time. Love's way too fuckin' complex for that. It ain't an absolute." Clearly this was something near-and-dear to Marv's heart.

After a moment, Marv seemed to calm, and he smiled and nodded. "Matt sounds like a keeper to me, doll. Don't matter if ya haven't known him that long. If ya feel somethin' for him, ya feel somethin' for him, and life is way too damn short to second guess yer heart," he told her.

Well, that told him something. This wasn't just some kind of partial adoption of an old imprint, she was pretty clearly fully switched to on. Again, not that Marv minded. He could be friends with this one, though he could also be friends with the more childlike Echo that walked into The Bridge. "Yeah, well. Fuck 'em. When ya get back you can prove 'em all wrong." Marv sure had. Everyone had thought he'd been confused, suffering from one of his hallucinations. He hadn't. It gave him no small amount of pleasure.

He checked his PDA, appearing to check the map before quickly checking the network. Dr. Saunders hadn't sent him anything. Okay, so I'm on my own for now. I can handle that. "Okay," he said out loud, "the bike lots should be right around here somewhere."

Marv's eyes widened. "Hey, wait! Hold on a second!" He sighed and shook his head, then took a few steps back. "Okay, here we go," he mumbled to himself, rubbing his hands together before taking off running at the fence. At the last possible second he jumped, sailing up and almost over the fence in one go. Unfortunately it was almost, so he caught the edge of the fence with his hands and kicked up and out with his feet, clearing that last little bit.

The landing likely would've shaken anyone else. Marv stuck the landing and didn't even flinch. He proceeded to jog up to her. "Don't go runnin' off like that, 'specially not when we're technically trespassin' somewhere," he chuckled.

Marv laughed and waved it off. "Aw, don't worry 'bout it. Just don't want ya gettin' caught, is all." That much was absolutely true, he wasn't sure what could cause her to switch back and since he hadn't received any communications from Dr. Saunders in a while, he definitely didn't want to have to try and wing something like that on his own.

"Well, we can check 'round a bit more if ya want," Marv replied. He wasn't tired, and even if he had been, he wouldn't have left until Echo was safe back home. Even then, he'd probably end up sleeping somewhere nearby, so he could make sure she didn't go wandering again.
