WHO; James T. Kirk & Gaila
WHERE; Building A, Room #309A
WHEN; evening of the 25th
RATING; TBA

Gaila had died. Jim Kirk was never one for handling death well, but he somehow managed to cope with her passing. Maybe it was because he'd been an adult and not an infant with no recollection of the event and having taken part in the incident with Nero and seeing the wreckage of the ships in orbit of Vulcan with his own eyes made what lead to her death much more real and tangible, whereas his father's had been something that was more a story, part of family and Starfleet lore, than something he felt he was a part of. Even after getting to know his father here in Colligo before whoever ran this hellhole sent him home, it still felt that way; a mark on the map of the history of time. It was in the past and he didn't remember it.

He wished he didn't remember Gaila's death. He felt horrible for not realizing that she might not be on the Enterprise like he and Uhura had been during the event. It hadn't been until afterward, when the ship returned to Earth and he got his hands on the casualty list did he learn that Gaila was lost in the attack. She'd been on the Farragut. It'd been hard to swallow, but he'd managed. Uhura, here in this place, had helped a lot with that. Odd how he actually considered the linguist a close friend now, where before he wouldn't even dare call her a regular one. She was taking this harder than he was, despite the brave face she would putting on and despite his offer to tell Gaila of her fate himself since he was the captain and it was a captain's duty to do what his crew could not, she insisted they both tell her. He would keep his promise and not tell Gaila what'd happened to her.

But right now, he needed to see her. Seeing her would make her being alive again more feasible, despite how real it already was speaking to her over the PDAs. Conveniently, she seemed to be housed right next door. That saved him from searching every floor on all three buildings to find where she was.

He raised a hand and knocked. Hopefully she was in. If not, he had his PDA shoved in his back pocket to raise her.

Gaila hadn't been expecting any visitors, so when she opened the door and saw Jim standing there, it was a pleasant surprise. Even if she hadn't seen him in person since she'd arrived and, truthfully, had been a little upset about it.

Still, she smiled brightly at him and stepped aside to let him in.

"Hey, Jim. Good to finally see you."

Good to finally see him. It was good to finally see her, too, and he showed this impulsively by stepping into the room, but pulling her into a hug instead of walking deeper into the apartment and waiting for her to shut the door. Physical contact made seeing her again much more real and after all he'd been through lately, a hug was welcomed; especially one that felt so familiar.

Wow, he was full of surprises tonight. She didn't mind at all, though, and returned the hug eagerly, pressing her cheek against his.

"I missed you, too," she said with a small laugh.

Pleasant surprises, he hoped. He wasn't the bearer of bad news this time around, thankfully, so there would be no spoiling of this happy reunion of friends who'd been a bit more than friends tonight. He had to admit that as cross as he was with Colligo for doing this, it was nice to know that someone who'd been an honest friend to him was here in the city. There weren't many people Kirk could honestly call friend back at the Academy, but Gaila had been one of those few.

He drew back from the hug after a moment, but kept his hands on her arms for a moment longer. "I've probably missed you more." Letting go, he went to the door and shut it for her. "Have you been settling in alright?"

"Yeah. Things have been a little confusing, but overall fine," she said, going over to pull out a chair for him to sit in. "I still need to find a job and everything."

"I still get confused now and then in this place, so don't feel bad," he said was he followed her to the chair and took a seat. It was the truth, after all. "The doors don't open automatically. I've made myself look like an idiot often enough by walking into them." Doorknobs, such a chore.

He took a moment to look around the apartment. It looked just like the one he was in, and would probably be identical save for the makeshift astromestrics lab and alcove that were housed in the second room.

"I should probably get a job, too." Obsessing over scans and failed ideas and attempts at getting out of here was going nowhere and hadn't benefited him in the least, save discovering the second moon in orbit, but that had been months ago. "Our bank accounts are pretty packed, but a job's something to do. What did you have in mind?"

Gaila laughed. "The non-automatic doors can be a pain," she agreed. "You'd think this planet would be more advanced."

She frowned, sitting back a bit and crossing her legs. "I don't know," she said thoughtfully. "I have a few skills I could probably put to work, but I'm not sure how the demands for a computer engineer are. Maybe I could train to be a bartender."

"Some of the supermarkets have automatic doors, as does the mall, but they aren't standard on buildings as they are on the worlds we frequent."

A few things she'd be very good at sprang to mind, but they weren't things he was willing to say out loud, nor things he would let her do. "You'd been hard pressed to get rid of me if you went into that profession," he joked in reference to her becoming a bartender. "I've contemplated teaching at the local university -- Uhura's idea, actually. They might have something for a computer engineer to do. The hospital could probably use someone with your talents, too."

Her face brightened at the idea. "You think so?"

Gaila considered the idea of Jim teaching for a moment, pursing her lips. "I think you'd be a good teacher. And it's an extension of captaining, isn't it? What were you thinking of teaching?"

He grinned and nodded. "I know so. A lot of their equipment depends on the systems they're hooked up to functioning properly. I'm willing to bet you know more about the ins and outs of that better than anyone they've currently got on their staff."

"You think so?"

The thought of teaching had never crossed his mind until Uhura had suggested it. Kirk had laughed at the idea originally, but now...it didn't seem like so bad of an option.

"History," was his answer. "It's kind of a hobby and I think I'd have better luck going for that than interplanetary diplomacy. This place may not be Earth, but it functions like it's suppose to be and I know Earth History like the back of my hand."

Gaila beamed at him and nodded. "Yeah, I do. Any particular point in history you'd want to teach?"

"If we were back in our time, I'd say this time. The pre-World War III 21st Century had so many breakthroughs and turning points in both technology and culture that led to both the war and the steps taken after it that led to the formation of the Federation, but that'd be more Pop Culture than History." He thought about it for a second before answering, "Early American History. Colonial times. Which probably means nothing to you."

He wasn't sure how much Gaila knew about Earth History, but wouldn't be surprised if she'd never heard the name George Washington before. It wasn't exactly something that was taught at the Academy, as most Human students learned those details in school growing up before they stepped foot in San Fransisco.

"A lot's happened. Both here and back home," he said suddenly, looking down at the ground for a moment. "It's...really good to see you after all that."

It didn't. Gaila didn't know much about Earth History at all, save the history of Starfleet and the Federation.

Her eyebrows drew together at Jim's next words, and she was immediately concerned. She placed a hand on his arm, getting him to look up at her.

"Anything you feel like talking about?"

You're going to die, he wanted to say, but couldn't bring himself to. He wasn't that bold or willing to break the promise he made to Uhura for them to tell her together once things had calmed down a bit. There was a lot to talk about, but nothing he was willing to bring up.

Kirk looked up. "Do we have to talk?"

Perhaps it was a selfish request, but it was also an offer: an offer of comfort and a sense of familiarity in the only way he knew how.

That wasn't exactly an unusual request coming from him - hell, it wouldn't have been coming from her, either. But something about the way he asked made her worried.

She knew better than to try to get him to open up about it, though. He wouldn't, not right away. So she just shook her head slowly, eyes still full of concern.

"Not if you don't want to."

The last thing he wanted to do was worry her and he didn't want to continue lying to her and avoiding talking about what was really on his mind, so it was best if he didn't talk at all. Besides, there were much better ways he could express how much he'd missed her without using words. After all, he never though he'd see her again.

Standing he went over to her, taking her hands and pulling her gently to her feet. "I don't want to. And besides," he slipped an arm around her waist and put his other hand to her cheek, "I'm much better at this than talking," and kissed her.

She smiled brightly, leaning in and kissing him back. A hand of hers reached for his free one, fingers entwining with his.

He allowed her to lace their fingers together, sliding his hand back into her hair and deepening the kiss.
